This is host file error.

Check your host file and remove any lines with xx.xx.xx gs.apple.com or put a hash (#) in front of it an do the Shift + Restore again.

Shawn means apps that you transfer the purchases to iTunes. When you connect the iPhone to iTunes, right click the iPhone icon and just choose "Transfer Purchases". Apps that you purchased via the iPhone will be transferred to iTunes. The next time you restore, iTunes will sync back the apps to your iPhone. The iTunes backups all the settings for the apps but not the apps itself.

Added on May 28, 2012, 4:36 pmI would recommend either you purchas PKGbackup from cydia which backs up Cydia tweaks or Aptbackup (which has never worked for me).

Or before restoring/upgrading, write down the list of tweaks you have.

the “host” file is under C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\

on Windows 7

To edit the host file,
Click Start – search for “Notepad“, right-click and select “Run as Administrator“. This should launch notepad with elevated privileges. Now, open the host file from the File menu, edit and save.

Fix Error 3194

The fix is the same regardless of what operating system you are using:
  1. Quit iTunes
  2. Locate your hosts file, in Mac OS X this is /etc/hosts and in Windows this is c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
  3. Open the hosts file with Administrator privileges
  4. Remove the very bottom of the hosts file.
  5. Connect your iPhone to the computer
  6. Launch iTunes
  7. Put the iPhone/iPad/iPod into DFU mode by turning the phone off and then holding down the sleep and power button for 10 seconds, then release the power button but hold onto the home button until iTunes tells you that the device is now in recover mode
  8. Use the iTunes Restore feature as usual with the iOS device
Once your iOS update is finished, remove the “74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com” line from your hosts file again so that iTunes can properly update as usual

This is incorrect and misleading. You only do this if you want to restore to a custom firmware or if Apple server is not working and you need Cydia to verify the firmware file.

By putting the IP address as gs.apple.com you are tricking iTunes into using Cydia as the verification server. This only applies for 5.1.1 if Cydia already have the SHSH saved for your iPhone.

If you have never jailbroken the iPhone, then Cydia will not have the SHSH and you will still get the 3194 error.

If you just want to upgrade/update/restore to a stock Apple firmware (5.1.1), then you just need to make sure that the host file is not tampered with (therefore you need to remove the gs.apple.com line) and let iTunes point to Apple Verification Server.

I think the best way not to dabble with hosts file is thru Tiny Umbrella. Just one click and it's done.

so means if you have not yet jailbroken before than erase the gs.apple.com from host file

if have jailbroken before then need to enter ?
