For a handset with such a broad range of standout features and specs, the Galaxy S II is remarkably easy to summarize. It's the best Android smartphone yet, but more importantly, it might well be the best smartphone, period. Of course, a 4.3-inch screen size won't suit everyone, no matter how stupendously thin the device that carries it may be, and we also can't say for sure that the Galaxy S II would justify a long-term iOS user foresaking his investment into one ecosystem and making the leap to another. Nonetheless, if you're asking us what smartphone to buy today, unconstrained by such externalities, the Galaxy S II would be the clear choice. Sometimes it's just as simple as that.

Is it perfect? No, of course not. While we like some of Samsung’s tweaks – the Kies air app is surprisingly useful, for instance – we’d prefer to see a clean Gingerbread install rather than TouchWiz. How much of a delay that UI modification will force on future Android OS updates remains to be seen, and some changes – such as the keyboard – are frankly backward steps. There are also some annoying teething pains, such as the Video Maker app being unable to handle the Galaxy S II’s 1080p footage.
They pale in comparison to the Samsung’s strengths, however. The display belies its WVGA resolution with Super AMOLED Plus technology that manages to be both frugal and visible outdoors, while the dual-core 1.2GHz processor does a similar balancing act with power use and performance. Together they add up to a smartphone with brilliant battery life and the most future-proof hardware we’ve seen to-date. Layer on top of that a great camera, fulsome multimedia support, broad connectivity and a wafer-thin design, and we’re running out of reasons not to buy the Galaxy S II. Samsung has upped not only its game but the benchmark for smartphones in general.

And so we come to the end of our epic Samsung Galaxy S2 review – and we know some of you might have jumped straight here to see what we think.
However, if you're considering purchasing this phone, we recommend you take a look through our review, as there's a lot to cover in the new phone and we wouldn't want you to miss anything now, would we?
But if you're after a one-word summary of the Samsung Galaxy S2: awesome. We've been waiting for a phone to set a benchmark among the dual-core breed, and we've found it in the Samsung Galaxy S2.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Seldom do we rate a phone a full 5/5, but the Galaxy S II is one of the most advanced, well-rounded, and powerful smartphones we've ever tested. Samsung truly delivered on its second-generation Galaxy S. We can't get over how thin the Galaxy S II is, and it's a true joy to be able to browse the web with such smoothness and speed.
There certainly is room for improvement here. Samsung ought to work on making TouchWiz as lean as possible, and it'd be nice to turn it off entirely and revert back to stock Android for maximum speed. We also wonder whose idea it was to have the device make a beep when the battery is fully charged...if you like waking up at 3AM, this won't be a problem for you, but for those of us that like to sleep soundly, it's a big annoyance.

The Plus indicates a transition from the Pentile matrix to a panel technology that has three sub-pixels for each pixel. The Pentile matrix shares eight sub-pixels between four pixels while the new pixel layout in Super AMOLED Plus follows what has been commonly done in LCD panels. This means the same four pixels will have a total of 12 sub-pixels. This should translate to improved color reproduction and a generally sharper-looking images.

Samsung Galaxy S2 internal memory explanation
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
The internal 16 GB is flash memory. 2 GB is partitioned (unviewable) and all your apps is installed there. Out of the balance 14 GB, about 2GB is used by phone system and you have about 12 GB left. When you installed apps with supporting data, example games downloads, dictionary data, news feed, tweeter feeds data etc, all such data goes into the other 12 GB partition

Battery maintenance tips : from forum lowyat SGS thread
1) Avoid frequent full discharges because this puts additional strain on the battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory. (In this respect, lithium-ion differs from nickel-based batteries.) Short battery life in a device is mainly cause by heat rather than charge / discharge patterns.
2) Batteries with fuel gauge should be calibrated by applying a deliberate full discharge once every 30 charges. Running the pack down in the equipment does this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate and in some cases cut off the device prematurely.
3) Keep the lithium-ion battery cool. Avoid a hot car. For prolonged storage, keep the battery at a 40% charge level.
4) Avoid purchasing spare lithium-ion batteries for later use. Observe manufacturing dates. Do not buy old stock, even if sold at clearance prices.
5) If you have a spare lithium-ion battery, use one to the fullest and keep the other cool by placing it in the refrigerator. Do not freeze the battery. For best results, store the battery at 40% state-of-charge.
How to calibrate battery ?
1.Run the device down until it turns itself off. 2.Turn it back on and wait for it to turn itself off again. 3.Remove the battery for 10 seconds. 4.Replace the battery, but leave the device off. 5.Charge the device until full and then for another hour. 6.**Root users only** Using a Terminal Emulator, type “su” enter, followed by “rm /data/system/batterystats.bin” ( can also be done more easily through CWM or SGSTools app) 7.Run the device’s battery down until it turns itself off. 8.Turn the device on and charge for at least 8 hours. 9.Unplug the device, turn off, then charge for another hour. 10.Unplug the device, turn on, wait 2 minutes. 11.Turn off again and charge for another hour. 12.Restart and use as normal.
Wakelocks?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Use BetterBatteryStats to check what is keeping your phone Awake and not allowing the phone to enter deep sleep
In the words of the developer:
I wrote BetterBatteryStats because I was missing the great battery history that Spare Parts allowed to call on Froyo: - Process stats with User and System CPU time - Network Usage with bytes sent and received - Wakelock stats (the most important one when it comes to battery drain)
This app is still under development and may contain bugs. If you find one you can keep it, but I’d be happy if you could also report it to me. BetterBatteryStats is calling the “batteryinfo” service of Android to retrieve data already lying there without generating overhead. BetterBatteryStats is focussing and has been tested on Froyo and Gingerbread and the APK is set to run only on those versions only. What are wakelocks and why should you care about them? When it comes to Android the most discussed and commented topic that I know is battery drain / battery life. I’m a quite heavy user because I spend a lot of time on the train every day reading my mails, surfing and listening to music but still my phone is off for a long time during the day and while I accept the battery being drained while I use the phone I care about it draining slowly while “doing nothing”. And here’s the point: my SGS2 drains about 2-10 mAh where it was up at 20-100 mAh before I started cleaning stuff up.

Basically, you just need to replace the map data : see tutorial here :
Tips from user selphy : Ok, for those of you who have trouble installing the Google Maps (for Navigation), i had issues too, but managed to do it through the following:
1. First, make sure your phone is rooted, then download the Google Maps-ownhere.apk (NOT the re-sign one), and transfer to your external SD card. 2. Using Titanium backup on your phone, wipe data and then uninstall both Google Maps and Street View. 3. Then using root explorer on your phone (i used Super Manager, which also has root functions), transfer the Google Maps-ownhere.apk file to your phone's system/app folder (make sure its set to R/W). 4. Then just reset the phone, and voila! Navigation is available!

Deep Sleep?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Deep Sleep runs automatically by the kernel and on battery only. If connected to charger, the kernel won't trigger deep sleep mode (the CPU will throttle down to 200MHz). When activated, the kernel will reduce the CPU frequency like notebook standby and will wake the phone when any services require an update in order to save battery.
Drawback, it introduce the wake up lag to the phone. If your phone instantly wakes up on battery, it means there is an active app running in the foreground (normally apps which requires constant network access) or a nasty app did not suspend or kill by the OS.
App to use to monitor : CPU Spy.

Your backup here is often called a Nandroid backup . All your phone's data, apps, settings, roms, kernel etc is FULLY 100 % backup, Under this ClockworkMod recovery you will also have option to RESTORE 100 % the phone status
Titanium Backup is an APP which requires phone to be rooted. You can use TB to backup all your apps and its associated data. You ONLY can use TB in a working phone . You can restore anything from TB if your phone crashes and cannot be rebooted. TB does not backup your kernel/roms,
Overheating Issues?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
For new users and to be user - the SGS II operating temperatures is higher than most other Androids, simply because it is dual core and its thinness transmit heat easily. Some users like to use the word " hot" - I'd said is warmer than normal. The word hot connotes a feeling of uneasiness and a possible burning effect on your skin, which it will not. Most users I believe will use some sort of casing or backcover - these will reduce the effect
If you have been using single core Androids 1 GHZ models before - you will not experienced the " hotness" as a serious concern, I'd say generally is about 2-3 degree centigrade more. Those who are coming over from say Blackberries and Symbian will feel the difference more obviously
Use an app to monitor battery temperatures - batterylife widget is a good free app. It shows you the temperature and voltage and is quite a well designed widget
These are guides to operating temperatures ( degree centigrade ) basing solely on my usage :
Idle not in use : 26 - 31 Browsing : 32-35 Gaming : 35 - 40 WiFi hotspot : 35 - 45 GPS : 35 -45
With prolong continuous usage over several hours it could hit 50 but I'd think such usage should be minimal unless you are one freaking gamer I read the phone has gone to extreme testing till 70 degree and still performs well

Rooting an Android phone opens its core functions that aren’t available when you buy it. One of the major benefits is the ability to install apps to the SD card, which saves space on the device. Rooting also enables you to install apps that required access to system files, example - backup , screenshots . Commonly use of rooting is to allow installation of alternative roms which is faster and better, more features, and reduced bloatware. Rooting will not remove your 3rd party apps, data/wipe clean your phone. And the chance of bricking the phone during rooting is close to impossible. Just make sure your phone has at least 50% battery charge. Do refer to the specific methods on how to unroot back if needed - easiest is to use SuperOneclick, One root solution or flash back official stock rom
Warranty?

Rooting will void your warranty but you could always unroot it before you send to SME to fix your phone. Some SME might not even mind if your phone is rooted.
How to Root? (ONLY For the Original Galaxy S2 variant (i9100)
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Rooting
1. Download Odin and the correct CF-root zip file according to your firmware. To check, go to settings, about phone, scroll to the bottom. Look at kernel version, remember the last 3 letters, so let's say its XXKL1, then download the KL1 CF Root file.
2. Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
3. (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
4. Start ODIN
5. Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
6. Put your phone in download mode (To enter download mode, power off the phone, then press the volume down+home+power button at the same time. Once you see the GT-I9100, let go of all 3 buttons. The phone will display "warning" and some text. Press volume up button to continue. Your phone should show an android icon and "downloading" text. This means you are in download mode now.)
7. (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
8. Make sure repartition is NOT checked
9. Click the START button
10. Wait for the phone to reboot
11. Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
It is definitely possible to remove that pesky warning triangle during boot when running a custom kernel, though you should be well aware that this method does NOT reset the custom kernel flash counter. The steps are not complicated, but they aren't easy either, so read well.
1. Make sure you have CF-Root flashed (see the first post). You must have the "CWM Manager" app available.
2. Make sure you have the same version of CF-Root extracted until you have the zImage file. (ZIP --> extract --> TAR --> extract --> zImage).
3. Push the zImage file to /sdcard . It must still be called zImage !
4. Find an original Samsung signed stock kernel (preferably from the same stock firmware you have, but it's not terribly important)
5. Reboot into download mode (adb reboot download, or boot the device with home and volume-down pressed)
6. Fire up ODIN, and flash the Samsung kernel
7. Boot the device with the stock kernel. CWM Manager will still be available.
8. Start CWM Manager, select Flash Kernel, and select the zImage from CF-Root you previously put on your SD-card. The kernel will flash and the device will reboot.
9.You will now notice you no longer have the warning triangle during boot, but you are actually running CF-Root with all it's goodies!
10. In the future, if you only use the Flash Kernel option inside CWM Manager instead of ODIN, the triangle will not return, neither will your flash counter increase. But keep in mind, that CWM Manager can only handle a direct "zImage" if you are NOT running a kernel with full busybox support (this is currently needed for flashing kernels out of .TAR and .ZIP files)

First and foremost I am not an expert in such stuffs - this is based on my experience flashing the first Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab and present Galaxy S II. Any experts reading this please do correct me if I am wrong in any way
PIT stands for PARTITION INFORMATION TABLE. The pit file basically tells Odin how to divide the partitions (for formating) and also where certain components ( PDA, PHONE, CSC ) to go when flashing them individually. PIT understanding is very crucial when you wish to flash roms from samfirmware.com , one place I always discourage new users from attempting as it is a trap to bricking a phone if you do not understand what you are doing
Cooked roms take cares of PIT ; you rarely see cooked roms asking you to choose PIT during flash thro Odin. Most cook roms, the developer has built in his rom the PIT instructions
For example, in the samfirmware.com Galaxy S site, you can even see different types of PIT listed and a warning that you choose the right PIT file. In its SGS II site, If you look at samfirmware.com - there is a default PIT file you can download at the top box just above the list of firmwares for different regions. If you download any of these official roms, you will see some roms comes with a PIT file and some does not. You asked a very good question, why is the PIT included if is of no use ? My advise is simply this : If you see a PIT included in your rom, choose it during flashing as most probably the PIT is a changed version from default. You can only use this PIT to flash with the rom that comes with it. You cannot take this PIT and used it to flash another rom - this will brick your phone. When you use a wrong PIT - you have 2 possible scenarios : - failed flash and phone cannot boot - flash OK but the whole internal SD is formatted and cannot be detected at all by phone ( my experience with the Tab)
If the rom downloaded does not supplied a PIT file - than you just flash it without it or you choose the default PIT
As the PIT name implies, using PIT basically repartition /reformat your whole internal SD - once you select PIT, you will see repartition is auto selected. All your data in the internal SD will be wipe clean
You can choose NOT to select the PIT during flashing if you wish to have your internal SD intact. I cannot say whether you will have a successful flash. If is successful it just means your present rom PIT is similar to the rom you have downloaded. If is unsuccessful, just flash it again and select PIT
If the rom file is packaged together as a single tar file ( instead breakdown into separate entities of PDA, Phone, CSC ) , there is no need to use PIT. Just flash the tar file as PDA in Odin
Recovery/Download Mode?

Download mode is used when you need to flash rom through Odin. Recovery mode is used when you wish to do a backup/restore of your phone, flash roms based on zip files, cleaning up your caches , update firmware officially through supplied update zip files etc.

ClockworkMod has much more to it such as :
1. Reboot system now
2. Apply update from sdcard
3. Wipe data/factory reset
4. Wipe cache partition
5. Install zip from card
6. Backup and restore
7. Mounts and storage
8. Advanced

What is ROM/Flashing/FAQ about Flashing?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Q: What is a ROM?
A: A ROM contains the operating system and often additional software which can be “installed” to your mobile device. Most ROM’s provided by the chefs (people who create cutomized ROM’s) just contain the operating system and additional applications. Shipping ROM’s (ROM’s provided by the manufacturer or official providers) also contain a Radio ROM and a bootloader. Please notice: A ROM can ONLY be flashed to a device it is made for.
Q: What is a Radio ROM?
A: The Radio ROM contains the drivers for the communication devices of your phone. Some ROM’s need one or more specific Radio ROM’s to work properly. Usually the chef, who created the ROM recommends a Radio ROM. But don’t mind, if your Radio Rom does not match, you can always flash another without needing to flash the ROM containing the Operating System (OS) again.
Q: What means SIM-Unlock?
A: Lots of providers want to bind their customers. So they add a SIM-Lock to their devices with only allows to use SIM-Cards using their networks. If you want to use a SIM-Card from another provider, you need to SIM-unlock your device. This can be done by contacting the phone's provider (paid & sometimes free). This is common for USA based Tecos.
Q: Can I brick my phone by flashing a ROM?
A: YES. But if you follow all instructions, it is quite implausible that your device bricks.
Q: Does flashing affect the warranty of my device?
A: Yes, flashing an unofficial rom will void warranty. But as long as your device can be unrooted and be reflashed again to stock original rom you can than send in for warranty claims.
Q: What can I do, if i gain problems with the ROM i flashed to my device?
A: First of all you should inform the creator by posting in the ROM's thread if the problem is not described yet. Then you should wait for an update/fix or, if the issue is a showstopper for you, try another ROM.
Q: Which is the best/fastest/... ROM?
A: Nobody can answer you this properly. There are nearly daily new ROM's here and everybody has different demands to a ROM. If you want to know, which fits best for you, read the ROM description and try the ROM('s). Only you can decide, which ROM is the best (for you).
Q: What is the difference between a hardreset and a softreset?
A: A softreset reboots your device. A hardreset sets all settings back to the ROM's defaults. All of your data, settings and additionally installed programs will be deleted.
What is IMEI?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
The International Mobile Equipment Identity or IMEI is a number, usually unique, to identify GSM, WCDMA, and iDEN mobile phones, as well as some satellite phones. It is usually found printed inside the battery compartment of the phone. It can also be displayed on the screen of the phone by entering *#06# into the keypad on most phones.
The IMEI number is used by the GSM network to identify valid devices and therefore can be used for stopping a stolen phone from accessing the network in that country. For example, if a mobile phone is stolen, the owner can call his or her network provider and instruct them to "blacklist" the phone using its IMEI number. This renders the phone useless on that network and sometimes other networks too, whether or not the phone's SIM is changed.
How to Backup your IMEI? (IMPORTANT)
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Every user of this phone should always backup their IMEI just incase something goes wrong when flashing files, use 'ktool' to backup your IMEI, it can also be used to flash new kernel files.

The JIG just resets your flash counter and remove the yellow triangle during first bootup What does this counter do exactly?
It's very simple: it counts the number of times you flash a custom ROM or kernel on your SGS II, so the guys over at Samsung know of it when you return the phone to them for any kind of problem you may have (this is done so they can say whether you've voided your warranty or not). Even using Odin to get back to stock won't help you and will let the counter go up by one The good news is that the counter can be reset by using one of those jigs we all know very well
No, unfortunately Samsung has very clear in mind what it's doing. It seems there is a second counter, which counts the number of times the custom flash counter has been reset, and the bad news is that its position/folder has not been discovered yet.

Please note that ROMS made for the Original S2 cannot be flashed with the G version of S2 or you will brick your phone. Only ROMS made for the G version can be flashed.

If you install cracked/pirated apps from illegal "ahem" sources or using one of those blackmarket, faked android market apps, etc BEWARE that your phone becomes unstable. Common symptoms said to be due to these are :
- unexplained sudden reboots - auto shutdown - unstable browsing - sudden swing back to homescreen, freeze while in midst of browsing - occasional hangs/freeze while in use
The instability issues is more apparent/commonly occurring if phone is on Android version above Froyo 2.2.2 . Gingerbread is obviously more insecure
No one knows exactly how these cracked apps interact with one another and a combination of certain specific apps could be the cause of these issues. Installing anti virus apps might help but is not a proven solution.

Thanks to Spider on the CheckROM forums :
Most people come into custom roms and dont really understand what the forums are saying to them in the terms of doing things the right way, often things get misinterpreted as i understand but really you don't!!!
This is the case when it comes to custom roms installation, new comers think yeah i'll have a go and go for it without even understanding the basics of custom roms, wrong move, a little research didn't do anybody any harm, and is time well spent when it comes to taking a gamble on bricking your phone.
The main thing I've noticed is that people don't understand what a full wipe is and just go with what they see...
Going into clockwork mode and just selecting wipe. data, wipe delvic cache, wipe cache, is not a proper full wipe, its like wiping your arse with shit still in your bumhole untill you wash it, no no no, this method doesn't remove the old system files, there still there untill you carry out a format of the system partition, if you dont do this and install a rom over it you will have problems with the rom you just installed.
The correct procedure for doing a full wipe is below.
Go to clockwork mode recovery.
Go to mounts and storage and select it.
Go to format / system and select it. Scroll down to format system and select yes.
Go to format / data and select it. Scroll down to format data and select yes.
Go to format / cache and select it. Scroll down to format cache and select yes.
That's it no need to format anything else, just go back and install the rom from sd card.
This is the correct way of doing a full wipe everything is erased and formatted ready for the new rom, no old system files etc....

Erm anyone do "high end gaming" on their s2 like gameloft games or dead space etc?
Feels like I've dropped a tad of performance when coming to GB. Ever slightly so less frames. Nenamark seems to agree with me, I generally get a score of about 46-48. On CR6 highest I got was 54 on lulz NEAK, and generally at least above 40.
Could be placebo effect gaming wise, but always felt aosp ROM is heavier than samsung ROM, which could be affecting it.
Wonder if anyone knows if there is any Jtag service in Malaysia?
Apa tu jtag? thank god i didnt flash it, but those that got hard bricked, kelian them

Lol but animations shouldn't affect the nenamark test gua. Quadrant is decent on voku, but nenamark is just not the same as it was on CR6
jtag is this canggih manggih way to recover hardbrick devices. Uses some riffbox nonsense. If you youtube it you can see how it's done. Think need to solder the wire to certain part of the phone to do one, then unsolder once done, lol

Wow, jtag is some hardcore stuff right there. Gokhan definitely gonna get lots of negative feedback and lose some users.
I meant aosp was heavier cuz of the effects well, its just 4-5 fps difference, nothing much

then is it cannot wipe cache n dalvik forever as long as in siyah kernel?? or they gonna will have a fix?
when going from rc6 to 3.1 only. but i suggest u dun do others too until it is safe. so u need to spend time read siyah's xda thread and see if ppl flash any problem or not fiz

if you can live without ics, then no need to flash, wait for kies update. if you wanna tryi ics so bad, you need to learn odin and stuff.

Stable? Depends on how you see it
For me, I am still with Checkrom V6 and loving it. Ain't changing to ICS for the time being.

was using checkrom v6 (2.3.6) previously.. then hydrog3n (4.0.4 i think), then omega v11 (4.0.3)..
imho.. in terms of smoothness..

For a moment I didn't notice your GPU OC, then realised it must have been due to that.
But yeah, the rumour one I posted in previous page I think, basically Mali-400 @ 400mhz is the rumour. Meh. Kinda like Nexus, old graphics card but cranked up. Was saying also might as well we OC our Mali to produce same results. Looks almost there. Proly if you crank to 1.4ghz cpu can achieve same score oredi

I do think hydrogen is smoother than CR6, but it's slower. To me at least

shyt was runnin out of things to play normally sep has the eq to run the software case in point a galaxy phone when u lock it with pin or passcode even if u enter recovery, flash via odin or anythin else you still need the pin or passcode otherwise you hav no way to enter the phone but sep has the eq needed to run it

one thing I noticed in GB vs ICS (for my S2 anyway).. in GB, when first time access app drawer or go to manage apps, the app list comes out laggy (cause I have quite a number of apps installed).. but in ICS, it's much smoother.. not sure if my explanation is clear enough..

Only sammy ROMs give better graphics score it seems

Then could be due to aosp ROMs producing lower graphics performance. You on hydrogenics?
Hmm new Siyah...maybe gonna hang on to it for a while, let Voku run abit and see good or not
Hmm can't remember but think as smooth as 3.1 (since it's suppose to be 3.1 with diff mount points). Proly homescreen at least slightly less smooth than Voku.

it seems like people are a bit restless with Siyah rc6 kernel issue. if you are using siyah rc6 and have problem with camera, download the kernel rc6 again and reflash it without wipe any data.

NEW RC6 with camera FC issue huge chances of hard brick your phone (usb jig is useless) old rc6 still safe to use
Added on April 24, 2012, 9:46 am currently i'm using on lp7 better than previous modem i used on ics
RC6 got berlambak issue. First 1-2 versions was ok, then one on the 20th+april one based on korean sources could brick your phone. Latest one is fine. Easy way to check, open your camera app. The bad version had FC just by opening camera app.
If you're on that version, do no wipes. Flash kernel from CWM app (ideally, extract zimage like antt00 advised and flash that).
LATEST rc6 if you download from his page now is fine.

No one on sammy base rom using siyah?
Hmm should be ok gua, since all in one kernel. But think most of us here on aosp gua
I just flashed a new kernel (siyah 3.1 fyi) and then I rebooted my phone, i'm now getting this message 'you do not have a sd card or your sd card runs out of space'.
It's a bit annoying, so I restore my phone with a cwm backup(previously was on speedmod) and the message is still appearing! I have a lot of space on my sdcard.
there she review the sensation ics rom. when i was using litening rom, 2.5 & 2.6, also got this issue.
actually not sure whats the diff between sensation ics rom and litening rom.
both also sammy based, just one themed to be black and blue, the other themed to sensation.
the wifi issue happens quite frequently. maybe once or twice a day. damn frustrating.
Since when i anti sammy. I miss my tethering and swiping. That wifi bug is everywhere on ICS for SGS2. Sammy, aosp, aokp... all rom i tried also got. Its because to get rid of the bug gokhan use the korean kernel sources which eliminate the bug and at the same time brick devices.
Last night my little brother dropped my phone onto the floor from his bed. Just a mere 30cm max!! Now there is like a hair line scratch on the LCD. The line is not even straight, it's really like a lose strand of hair on the phone but it's a scratch.
How did that happen when the phone dropped on the floor and not something dropped on the LCD?
Or is it just a scratch on the matte screen protector like what my little brother is saying?

Dont worry, mine have fell down several time and more than 30cm, and nothing happen to the screen. Plus mine goes naked.
But if I take the screen protector off, I would have to buy a new one right since there will be bubbles when I try to stick it back?

I've never used a bumper, case or pouch. I don't know. I don't really think that they give that much of a protection.
What do you guys think? I certainly don't think it's worth RM100-150.

in that case, get one of those soft silicon ones la that can get cheaply for rm20, soft ones for sure will reduce the impact wert, common sense la, if u learn physics u shud know is bcoz the increase contact time reducing impulse. Anyways take a cellophane tape, stick one corner of the sp, lift the sp up using the tape, then see the scratch is on sp or on the screen la, lift abit, then see ad, just put it back down la, no need lidt off the whole sp. if u use cellophane tape ur sp wont damage

True that. The shock of the fall will be just the same just it protects the exterior only and it wont absorb the shock to protect the interior of the phone.

The other day, mine drop from pant's pocket while sitting down..facedown...PAP!!!! Such a loud sound, so scary. Luckily nothing happened...it has a casing, but the casing open liao when it drop face down..maybe the casing still holding it in place and the sound was made from the edge of the casing hitting the floor instead of the screen.....
anyone knows how much is the normal original s2 charger price, the normal one which you could find it in lowyat plaza, sungai wang or whatever, not from LYN forum garage sales. i broke a fellow's charger at college and he charged me 75, is it overpriced? im a htc user, know nothing about samsung. i've already paid it, just want to know that i got cheated by him or not.
Try thebyani 3.8. Sure you like wan. Close to aosp yet super stable Sammy rom. Combine it with abyss kernel, you are in for a one hell of a stable from with great battery life!!!
Am using the SII G version, recently updated its latest software, phone has not been tweaked at all howver realised it hangs almost everyday. Am sick & tired, but heard of ppl sending it back to SME and they'd reflashed it or something and the problem is resolved. Any truth here and how long does SME takes to do this?

I will flash thebyani 4.0 when its out. I was using his rom anyway before my move to aosp. Like it and no issue at all.

crrently on stock or siyah kernel? if siyah kernel, flash rc6, and try installing tb back
i know i've asked this before but i didn't get any response, how much is original s2 charger? talking about normal seller from lowyat, plaza, not the garage sales or private seller

Flashing rom definitely change the kernel. See if you got com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup-1.odex in data/app. if got then delete it and reinstall TB.

oh. the gapps also? cause it seems i need to flash back gapps in order to use it and kernel after flashing rom. btw, i deleted the keramidas in data/apps but when i install, it says, i got insufficient storage. TT

I think its best you start over. Did you flash any siyah kernel newer than rc6 b4? maybe ur mounts are messed up. I dont see the problem of full wiping since I can be up and running in about 30 minutes, so I suggest you to strt from scratch. Or maybe just try factory reset?clear all ur apps and start again to install. Maybe u can first try with netchip kernel, restore everything, then only flash siyah. Impossible to have problem then!!
You sure you deleted the odex file? Did you restart before try to install again?
yup. after that, i delete the whole data file cause it's empty already inside. n i tried rebooting n wipe cache n dalvik. but still no luck. so wiping the whole phone is the only solution?

nope, i just flashed the latest rc6 only. i'm thinking of factory reset. but the game that i play got score in it n i havent back up using Tb. i don't want to replay everything again. >,<

will wait till next hydrogen update n flash it. if still can't solve the insufficient storage issues, looks like full wipe is the only solution. TT btw, is it normal everytime i reboot, the android is upgrading-optimizing apps x out of xx thingy pop out? is it normal for every 1804 user cuz i don't face this during 1404. thanks.
My friend Xperia ray got his official ICS update today.. When is samsung?
Dude, the ics update won't bring big improvement to your phone. Its because the s2 in gb already very perfect, Only low end phone will probably feel some improvement.
Ics just intro minor improvement, and bring along some bugs with it, Most obvious is the wifi bug.
Not sure about you, but the new browser and swipe notification is not enough to compensate the wifi buy.
Your friends lausy xperia ray, still lose to your s2 with gb even it has ics update, Even its on jelly bean, it will still be slower. So dun panic.
Your s2 is still one of the most powerful device.
I'm sure you can see people here all discussing ics rooms like hydrogenics. Go first page learn root and flash. Try out ics yourself.
I used to complain about slow update ,finally can't stand, learn to flash and got a taste of ics, Now feel its not that much of a big deal, and I can go to bed peacefully without obsessing over it.

its also based on aokp. and has rom control. so how is this different from hydrogenics? any sifu care to explain? would appreciate it.
there is no best rom depend on which rom suit you better and more superior to you if i felt hydrogenic rom suit me better i also would brag like hydrogenic is the best rom?

Just solve a minor problem/annoyance that i've been facing since the day i got my phone.
notice how pressing the volume button will change ringer volume instead of media volume? no idea why this is the case, i always prefer to change media volume instead.
Apart from the inconvenience, the main reason why i hate ringer volume being changed by volume button is that i quite often accidentally press the volume button, and the phone will make a beep sound. i always set my ringer volume to maximum. so if i accidentally lower it, i need to set it back to max. once it reach max it will have a LOUD beep. which is frustrating and disturbing.
the solution is so easy! just go /system/media/volume/ui and change add a .bak extension to TW_Volume_control.ogg
after reboot, if accidentally press volume button, it will still change ringer volume, but at least no more loud beep sound.

i get that mate, no best rom. was focusing more about the difference between hydrogenics and ressurection.
not sure why so many variation among aokp. seems quite similar only.
litening rom and sensation ics rom both also based on sammy rom. they look similar to me as well.
why the heck make different rom if the difference is just the theme? at least there is a difference in litening and sensation ics (theme wise)
resurection and hydronics really looks same.
takan the difference is just the kernal diff, baseband etc?
Because there is no copyright and everyone is free to create their own rom even if it looks the same.
thanks antoo, that really make sense. now i understand.
hm....but this also means the real number of roms for s2 is much less than it seems. because many roms are actually copy of each other, with really minor tweaks.
so there's really just 3 main types of rom? 1. aosp/aokp (CM9,resurection, hydrogenics, etc) 2. sammy official (litening, sensation, etc...) 3. miui (any custom miui)
if so, i think i've tried them all, at least one from each kind.

Performance wise? Speed/smoothness Eh really? Always felt aosp roms are heavier, slower than stock

The mounting and front camera FC issues only exist in AOSP/AOKP rom if not mistaken, if you are on sammy's rom shouldn't encounter these.
I interested to get this Samsung Galaxy S II. I am currently using Nokia E72, never use touch screen before, I would like to know is the below features/functions available if I buy the Samsung Galaxy S II?
(1) While texting (sms) a paragraph, can i select (Highlight) a portion of Text I typed ? Example: Hello, how are you doing? I'm going to London this weekend. From the above example, can I select to highlight the Red Bold words only ?
(2) In my Nokia E72 qwerty keyboard, I usually press & hold "CTRL" + "C" to copy the words. Can I do this in Samsung Galaxy S II ? If cannot, how to do this in a shortest way to Copy the selected Words ?
(3) My existing Nokia E72, I press & hold the Space button, the LED Flash will lighted & act as a Torch Light when I'm in the dark. Can Samsung Galaxy S II do the same using its LED Flash ?
Appreciate if someone can help find out. Thanks in advance.

1. you can select, copy and paste texts that you are typing... I don't think however you can do that for texts like i.e. in the browser or other documents.
2. no need for buttons. touch the text, options will appear and you should be able to follow the instructions.

1)You can highlight the words you want to by long pressing on the word, there should be two arrows, then you can drag them to where you want 2)Do the same method as 1), then select copy 3)You can download a flashlight app from the play store, its simple, just search flashlight and download the first one then you're good to go

but to edit typo in a word for eg someething, to take out that extra e is definitely harder than droid. I know it has autocorrect but the autocorrect pop up doesnt come out everytime. IOS 5.0.1 on iTouch
But still, I prefer the IOS keyboard more than droid keyboard since i type more accurately with that so Im not really affected by this

Wow...it has been a very long thread..My S2 quite lagging whenever i using their keypad and alot of lagging here n there...correct me if i am wrong but i am guessing that deep sleep is the culprit behind all this..?

ok my apologies i no update ios rocks, iphone4s the best magic phone in the world. apple the richest and best company now with highest stock priced at $601
It doesn't show how awesome XXX is but if you want to comment on some features which others might/might not have, do research a bit rather than bash something which is not true. I still have my old backup iPhone 3G and did #1 & #2 easily. Peace.

Contacts to display, I ticked for Phone, SIM and Google account..
but most of my contacts are synced to all 3..
I just tried send a SMS to myself, with my number in all 3 locations (phone, sim, google), it still shows my contact picture..
my picture also shown. Only other senders aren't shown. for example I put my BF pic on his contact number. the pic are shown on contacts because I set display phone contacts but on SMS no picture was shown since it display SIM contact.
Guess I'm making you guys dizzy with all off this
It was working fine when I was on hydrog3n but both sammy base I tried (NEAT and Thebyani) have the same prob. only show SIM contact on SMS and there's no way to set it to display phone contacts only.

I see that most of the AOSP build does not include FM Radio but their build is pretty stable and smoother. Any idea on good AOSP ROM with FM Radio?
AOSP got no true FM radio AFAIK.

Try reflashing the kernel. Should be there and check using voltage control.

Check BetterBatteryStats to see what's the wakelocks that are causing the drain.

Already check. No other app was causing the drain. Only kernel values were there. Wifi was on during that time though but with Siyah I only lost 2% in 4 hours while idle with wifi on :hmm

Paste your BBS log? Sometimes kernel flashing can produce unstable battery readings. Need a few hours to let it settle.
Yes, give it a try the settings is very straightforward so you should be fine. I been using this for at least 7 months I think haha

Yes, 8 hours during office hour. That time is to test out stock battery, 3500mAh extended battery and 2200mAh external battery pack. No. still gingerbread (rooted).
When I try to charge my phone yesterday, this mesg popped up "Battery disconnected" and i was not able to charge. Tried remove battery and put it back also no luck. But when I removed my SD card, I'm able to charge. Does that mean my SD card gonna KO soon?
Like if you follow the new HTCs, some ppl say benchmark for One S (dual core, 32nm tech) is better than One X (quad core, 45nm tech). And from what I understand lower nm also saves battery much (more efficient)
That was based on Exynos 4212, which is a dual core 32nm
Now samsung's saying that they're using quad core 32nm, previous benchmark could be a prototype.
Either way, it's just a benchmark, and even if assuming the same, 32nm technology would help with battery savings
up until now dont know the exact processor it use. have to wait for the official one. but still, although s3 will be launch within this short period. i will still hold on to my s2 for at least another year.

The one I posted is from Samsung press release
Could be that 4212 suddenly got rebranded as quad and that is actual benchmark, but seems odd to do so.
Nope. At least with my app protector pro it won't work. Just crash and I can't get into my protected app.

Samsung isnt really into customer service unlike other OEMs like HTC and Sony. That's what i dislike about samsung, it doesnt care about its customers, especially the crappy camera firmware

Although the customer service not good, but at least the product is good. Can't imagine myself using a thick and heavy sensation, or a slow Xperia arc. Glad I chosen s2 and never regretted.

Sweat and dirt from your hands cause this rust. Especially when you hold your phone for browsing, gaming... Thus, it causing oxidation of your samsung logo and turn it into rust. Probably the coating has wore off since you using your phone naked that time.

Tried another batterry d, I just left it on standby mode and it's off when I noticed. I was on LPQ CFRoot only. As no response even on USB, how to flash? Is it bricked?
Before I root, I would like to backup all my apps, apps data, any apps recommend for me to do this backup? Last time when using rooted phone i used titanium backup, but seems like cannot run properly without root access

try to start it without sim and sd card. if got jig see if can get into download mode. if all also cannot, have to go service center. no choice sound like hardware failure somewhere.

Rooting
1. Download Odin and the correct CF-root zip file according to your firmware. To check, go to settings, about phone, scroll to the bottom. Look at baseband version, remember the last 3 letters, so let's say its XXKL1, then download the KL1 CF Root file.
2. Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
3. (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
4. Start ODIN
5. Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
6. Put your phone in download mode (To enter download mode, power off the phone, then press the volume down+home+power button at the same time. Once you see the GT-I9100, let go of all 3 buttons. The phone will display "warning" and some text. Press volume up button to continue. Your phone should show an android icon and "downloading" text. This means you are in download mode now.)
7. (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
8. Make sure repartition is NOT checked
9. Click the START button
10. Wait for the phone to reboot
11. Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
Just do this right? hehe... sounded very annoying, but just want to double confirm, first time root myself
yep super nice, reverse tower defence and damn intense at that, it gets harder and harder, need plan route use powerup at correct timings blabla wow

kuek wipe data in recovery means full wipe. if you wipe and reflash, still cant, you try use titanium backup, go to the market app, click it, then click wipe data. if still cant, you try change your kernel

Btw as I know, wipe data wont erase the data in internal memory. Since the internal memory got a lot of data file and apps folder from previous GB rom, will it affect the ICS stability? or I hv to format it in Setting -> Storage after I flash the ICS rom?

What sort of wifi ur company use lol? until it needs to support android 4.0 only then can connect?
must have some super special connection properties that it cant connect -___-
Or it might be related to the wifi channels ur company using. I read in desire hd ics thread b4 that they need to change the channel in the router than can work ready
Im sure the IT personnel in ur workplace know what im trying to say. Try asking them to change the channel?
Yours non g right? What's wrong with the camera? Mine working great, takes great pics.
Although the customer service not good, but at least the product is good. Can't imagine myself using a thick and heavy sensation, or a slow Xperia arc. Glad I chosen s2 and never regretted.
Camera pink spot issue, unnecessary autofocusing, and choppiness when moving from darker area to bright area.
There are two types of camera modules, one is fujitsu one is sony. Sony module is generally more problem free compare to fujitsu module. These can all be fixed with proper camera firmware. But, Samsung chooses not to give us a proper camera firmware. I've gone to th extent of flashing infuse 4g camera firmware to fix pino spot and choppiness, which i have to sacrifice torchlight

Hello, Is ICS already available for malaysian set? When I use my S2 to check the software update, it is asking for the samsung account. Do I need to have the samsung account for the ICS update? Is there any other way to update withour registering a account?
One more question is since my S2 is original (no root) set, how to backup all my installed apps and games before the update? Is there software available to do the backup or I can just copy all the folders from my S2 to PC and copy back from PC to S2 after the software update? Thanksin advance.
using data plan oso cause me a lot of battery consume ==
what you expect? read first page and check for wakelocks

how come my battery is getting less n less while usb charging?
USB charging is not as strong as using power outlet. Got close any power intensive apps? Sometimes when playing games while charging, battery will still go down

how to check sony or fujitsu? mine so far so good. the autofocusing during video is not the best implementation, but still better than no autofocus during video.
pink spot issue, i just tried and snap a blank paper in a bright room, stare really closely and long, seems got a mild, very very mild pink dots here and there. not sure if its noise or pink spot issue, but its really negligible for me.
you still have the pink spot issue? how serious is yours? care to share a sample?

actually its just the proxy settings la. on GB, if you set proxy, not all apps can access the proxy settings, need to be rooted, use an app called proxydroid, and set global proxy so all app can access.
on ICS, global proxy enable by default. one of the less mentioned ics feature.
want to ask you guys ah, is Nova Launcher incompatible with Widget Locker? I know it sounds crazy a bit, since both comes from the same developer, but I notice each time I enable Widget Locker, when my phone goes into screen off mode, my phone auto shutdown itself. When I disable it, nothing happens.

If camera firmware beginning is SC, then its fujitsu, if sony is OM something like that if im not mistaken. Mine is fujitsu unit i flashed sieg03 firmware to remove pink spot and choppiness. So far ok now, but no flashlight

Lets say my standard S2 standard battery, Li-Ion 1650 mAh.
Then i bought a portable charger of 5000mAh.
Does that means i can fully charge my S2 = 5000 / 1650 =3 full charge?
Yeah sort off. Its not 100% efficient, but on a high level pretty much about there

xda got ppl say that the camera app from facebook can enable flash using the sieg03 firmware.
decided to try wanamlite since many have said it's quite stable... flashed it with siyah 3.1.2. as well did the whole factory reset and everything and flashed wanamlite 11.3
have been having random freezes and battery drains... not consistent though....
Oh god my camera keep FC-ing. I realised only the front camera FC-ed, back camera is working fine. Might be the outdated ROM caused the problem, some said it's the kernel's problem. I'm on Siyah 3.1.2.
