You don't need glove, but learn how to hold the bar. This apply for both male & female, my palm is still silky smooth (ok, I exaggerated) & I can squat 100KG & deadlift 106KG @78kg. Read this, how to avoid Calluses (i.e. rough hand)

Assume your gf wants to be "stronger" but more towards good look, keep in mind that girl don't gets "bulk up" as fast as male due to 1/10th of testosterone hormone production compared to male (the bulk woman you see in bodybuilding competition mostly are unnatural, "steroided").

BUT lifting heavy still train our CNS (central nervous system) to recruit more muscle usage, i.e. difference between a weak untrained male at 70kg compare to 70kg olympic weightlifter is not only muscle, but also CNS ability to recruit more muscle at a given short amount of time frame.

Keep in mind small weight won't help in both strength or, do you see your mom who can deadlift (I mean carry) tons of grocery & grow bulk? So don't do stupid 5lbs bicep curl. Focus on Posterior Chain (lower back, butt & legg, as they are part of the biggest muscle in our body & quite unnoticeable), therefore learn low bar squat & dead lift, read the book "Starting Strength" by Mark Rippetoe (*cough* piratebay *cought*) for technique which is very important to learn the correct way plus avoid injury.

Lastly, look at their body in links below, smallish arm, bigger butt & legs, & still stronger than I am, not to mention lower weight :/

Stacii

TL;DR: Just get her started with low bar squat & dead lift & read Starting Strength
