Najib's 'nambikei' hollow: 2.5% of world's stateless people are M'sian Indians - Surendran

I refer to the continued failure of Prime Minister Najib Razak and the BN government to resolve the crisis of stateless Malaysians of Indian descent.

The government continues to display breathtaking apathy and indifference to the plight of an estimated 300,000 stateless Indians in Malaysia. Instead of employing the federal government's resources to resolve the problem, Cabinet Minister Dr S Subramaniam has now irresponsibly called on the opposition to bring the 300,000 stateless Indians to the MIC.

This speaks volumes for the governments complete disinterest in tackling this problem in a serious manner.

Staggering 2.5% of world total

Based upon UNHCR figures, it is calculated that Malaysian Indians who are de facto stateless make up a staggering 2.5% out of the world's total number of stateless persons.

The individuals affected suffer greatly, including denial of access to education, health, employment and rights attendant upon citizenship such as the right to vote.

These de facto stateless Indians are essentially blocked from participation in the formal economy. This is a drain upon the country, as it diminishes our economic output and narrows our fiscal base.

Hollow 'nambikei'

On 19.4.2012 hundreds of stateless Indians had peacefully gathered at Parliament, but the government had refused to send any representative to accept their Memorandum or listen to their pleas.

A deadline of 48 hours for the government to take action on this matter has also passed without any concrete proposal or plan of action to resolve this matter.

In these circumstances, our struggle on behalf of suffering and dispossessed stateless Indians will continue with ever greater intensity and urgency, including organizing peaceful protests and sit-ins throughout the country.

Prime Minister Najib Razak must go beyond empty slogans like 'nambikei', and seriously tackle this crisis of stateless Malaysians Indians.
