How come so little choice in building the character

From the beta demo, really can't see what's so good about this game.
It's feels like very little customizability. Doesn't have the same D2/WoW magic |

Or you can pick the least gear-dependent character, relatively.
The reason I'm going with WD is that I suspect he is less gear dependent than the rest. |
