as a quality engineer, this weld is acceptable. why waste money doing full weld when u can just tack weld and get the strength needed?
door frame is not structurally integral to the car so it not critical and that weld is probably stronger than the base metal surrounding it.

I'd love to see the welding on other more expensive cars.

maybe someone with the structural engineering or QC background would say this welding part is enough and more than capable for its structural integrity ...

but for someone with no/less knowledge about this ... when they see this .. i think they wont be so impressed about the things ...

It is Preve.

Whether this constitutes poor welding or not, this question is best to be answered by those in the industry.

Even my mother's new FLX welding is ok.
How come Preve's welding like this?

@FrostLance
But welding in 2nd picture is really bad.It looks like the welding cracked already.

@figuremeout
Some Proton Sales Center do sell the car that they keep as model. So no matter whether it's display model or model to be sold Proton should have done better with the welding.

nope.jpg, just a bunch of jerks who didnt gave the same amount of chance to certain car manufacturer, condemning everything blindly with utmost forces of unrelenting hatred to the name proton, and ferociously defending other car manufacturers with hypocritical thought and relentless respect. Have faith. That's matter. Would i buy proton? Maybe. Would I buy other cars? Maybe also. Just narrowing your thought on 'oh, proton will never improve', makes no wonder that Malaysia will not move forward. Rather than blindly bashing, helps improve by providing good criticism and feedback through proper channel. That isn't so hard.

I think it's because a lot of people have been actually affected by the poor manufacturing quality of protons.
I don't own one but my gf and friends own protons and I don't have enough space to list down the problems that they have with their cars. Namely power window, central locking, air-con vents (Waja), Door handles, etc. etc. etc. My vios that is older than their cars do not encounter any of these problems at all.

So do you think that they are condemning blindly or just that they have no faith to this manufacturer due to past issues and statements by the MD saying things like "don't blame proton coz they make 700 cars in a day"?

Edit: And photos of the indicator panel falling in on their display cars doesn't really help to improve their image too.

as a quality engineer, this weld is acceptable. why waste money doing full weld when u can just tack weld and get the strength needed?
door frame is not structurally integral to the car so it not critical and that weld is probably stronger than the base metal surrounding it.

I'd love to see the welding on other more expensive cars.

That is the thing you know you are stepped on like a mat by politicians in this country and yet you encourage it?

I think it is a bit rich to say that people bash proton in this country with no basis. Have you ever spent your hard earn cash to buy your own car to be plague with problems and selling it at a big loss? How would you feel?

However, I do give credit to the current MD of Proton for trying his best to improve Proton by putting the best accessories in the car, striving for quality improvements etc.

Putting emotions aside, the picture of the welding when viewed OBJECTIVELY do you think it is acceptable if it is sold overseas?

my company fabricates machinery and we do spot welds when full welds r not required (becoz full weld costs a lot more material, man hours and more skills to make it look goodl )

but generally we always minimize spot welding on exterior surfaces (especially those at eye level after installation)... it works but seeing spots here and there looks shitty... sometimes we spot weld from the inside....

IMO... proton could have spot welded the door and hide it behind the rubber smile.gif

actually i am curious... most ppl here say it fail becoz of cosmetic reasons or car safety?

if safety, we can always refer to the side impact test results... unless we can get an objective opinion from an experienced car engineer...

if cosmetic, well... tutup mata lar.. 65k... u expect nice nice welding meh

i am not basher nor supporter, i've been working in 1 of the reputable local assembly plant for Japanese vehicle before.

judging from the photo, i may conclude

1. yes it is spot weld, nothing wrong with that.
2. the quality of spot weld is not acceptable by JIS body shop standard (pre assemble the metal part before send for paintworks)
3. 1 of the photo clearly shown misalignment of the 2 panels, should the panels involve mechanical movement, ie window glass railings, this may distort the movement thus case premature power-window issues.
4. the poor welding finishing may cause water ingression and develop rust in future (as you can see on top right photo, there might already be some rust mark there)

Just my 2 cents. Hope that proton can improve in this

this is failure of the ED coating. Electro deposition for corrosion protection. Can happen if the company that supply them the ED coat did not do their homework properly. no use blaming Toyota. I have seen a local assembled BMW rusting completely from a failed ED coat.

1st picture = welding pass

2nd picture = welding fail and also QC fail , i cant believe proton QC will release the car like this

3nd picture = welding pass (2nd grade) , welding location abit low and temperature too high

4th picture = welding fail send back for repair , that why you see 2 time welding on the same place.

go clarify it with the showroom agent/manager or whoever is there. it's a showroom car for test drive. what for give the final production quality to be there.

then if u wan to buy, tell them don wan your car like this.

then when u got your actual car, go n inspect everything, after that sign off and hold your peace. open the dashboard if you have to.

as if other brand cars from japang or german don't have cheap fix like this. if it's working, then it works.

i know its different kind of welding, i know i didnt know how to weld but i did learn it before this and do my own weld.

- if want to use spot welding, at least make the finishing is good, not like that picture look already rust and not even or center between the metal joint, how the hell it passed the QC?
- dont care about the welding 1st, let see the metal joint, not even align properly, how this pass QC ?
- that joint is very easy to see, why not use different kind of welding, like the full welding, or just use spot weld but with fully closed the space around that area. at least it look proper, and no hole or space, nothing will enter into that like water making the metal inside rusting.

im not proton basher, i just say that proton should do based on wat they want to proof about especially the quality.

5. The other day I test drove their latest model on the test track at Shah Alam. I can verify and assure Proton customers and Malaysians generally that this new model can match any of the Japanese or European quality cars. It was such a pleasure to drive. A foreign friend who knows cars, tested the car and says it is up to the standard of the up-market cars from Europe.

6. This car uses hot press steel body which is stronger than cold press. It has a 1.6 liter turbocharged engine equal to a 2.0 liter engine power. The engine complies with Euro-five standards.

13. I believe this is a great car and Proton can be proud of it. Malaysians can be proud of it too. The extra Ringgit you have to spend will be worth it.

Maybe its an engineering concept. When got accident those two metal will seperate and all the impact of the accident will flow from the end of the metal.

According to insider news, they have clarified that the picture was a pre-production car. They admitted they had problems with the panel but it has been rectified before the launch. Basically, this picture is not of the test drive car! #newpreve #MalaysianDrivers

the reason is simple why malaysian got high hope in proton

cause they ad forced us to buy a car that not match with the price a.k.a stealing our hard earn blood money

also proton is a best accuse for government to put high tax on foreign car

so in the end, a car is not consider affordable for Malaysian

buying foreign car =/= not patriot to country

the market is open

we r not communist country

for the fan boy, i not sure if u guys is troller or hired by proton or watever

the fact is there.. proton is hard to change as long as GLC even it sold ..

the new owner got a very good connection to " "

so i doubt he is the "real" owner , so he might not have the power to make decision

end of story

hmm didnt know we have a lot of engineers and experts in lyn. (for those that do not understand this is sarcasm)
i'm no fanboi, but bashing like this is unfair. Would be better if there's actual test done or any citation saying this weld would effect the integrity of the car.
(Such as part of the door flying out when driving 120kmh)

in my understanding the door is one of the crumple zone refer this diagram

user posted imagehttp://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/images/ph_forces08.gif

the blue lines are the chassis; now the integrity of the car depend on this. IF a kapcai can damage the chassis (blue line) than by all means please bash.

btw Some people can afford imported cars some people cant.
What matters is how you drive.

stupid people will believe the actual customer units will have the same weldings...

look at the responses in this thread will confirm that NONE of the owners of other Proton models experience this kind of 'quality' and yet others still want to comment like they are the QC or salesmen of Proton competitors...

wah this thread still going rclxms.gif

anyway... back to topic, if it is a safety/quality issue, then we can only trust those independent testing on the side impact, unless u r a qualified car engineer...

if it is a cosmetic issue, then ya... proton needs to buck up... it works... but looks ugly sweat.gif

I've driven a second hand proton wira for 15 years now and it's really reliable. The only real problem I've had with it was the power window of course. I cant really complain about it since it's a 17 year old car and I dont really have the money to buy anything else so this proton car is good to me.

I've mentioned this to other people and they look at me in disgust, citing their own bad experience with using a Proton. I take it that a person's preference of proton lies in the extremes; either you love it or you dont, there's no middle ground.

hmm didnt know we have a lot of engineers and experts in lyn.

What matters is how you drive.

so how is your post related to poor welding point that even a 10 years old kid can do better?

I checked already.. The welding point is actually common.. even Hyundai Sonata also having this welding point. So it's nothing new. Later I upload the photos of both Sonata & Preve welding points.. The only differences.. Sonata more welding metal & workmanship abit better than the rough Preve welding.. Nothing wrong wth it smile.gif

Actually I checked both the showroom car & the test drive car.. The test drive car having better welding almost similar to Sonata but the display unit abit rough & less welding metal..So I think, it's not robotic welding but man-welded job & thus differences between cars are very obvious smile.gif

Here. Most cars also having this welding point. So it's not uncommon.. Only the quality of welding diff story.. One better than another.. So when the earlier photos saying Prevelike 1/2 cut job is not true.. other cars also having similar welding ponts :

Well, hv to accept the fact that one is <RM70K or ~ RM30K cars without excise & etc songlxp. cost added in and another is a RM140K car (RM70k without levy/excise) liao biggrin.gif .. The level of sound proofing & vibration also so much diff mah.. But OK-lah... comparing wth City & Vios or Elantra...not something higher.. I'm expecting more on Preve earlier.. but well.. fact is fact rclxms.gif

That's secondary.. But earlier, the whoto of Preve welding point is just to paint an incorrect picture that only Preve having 1/2 cut style welding and no other cars having this welding point biggrin.gif

nvm lor,coz i try compare mitsu grandis and preve, the only diff i can see :

1.preve engine noise abit noisy compare to grandis
2.grandis suspension is suprisingly hard compare to preve...maybe becoz design for mpv i guess
3.in term of acceleration, both doesnt have that much different, but grandis more faster la whistling.gif
4.preve steering vibrate a bit
5.preve engine noise is better than grandis
6.interior build grandis straight win, exterior almost the same
8.handling almost the same

175k vs 73k,not bad though for preve thumbup.gif

so how is your post related to poor welding point that even a 10 years old kid can do better?

based on the diagram, what i'm trying to say the welding of the door does not affect the structural integrity of the car directly.
that is all. btw the door is supposed to crumple when collided. to absorb the shock.

Oh, Preve engine is loud? Oklah, cannot consider edi. I fedup when my friends laugh at my BLM noise.

SImple things like these also cannot solve. Proton, aiii Proton. If want to solve, the car must be RM200k? Can, don;t take money from taxpayers la.

Stupid car company.

exactly what im trying to say, not life threatening (this apply to all cars)
but yeah appearance wise it is ugly, and its quite obvious compared to other cars that uses the same technique
(people never really noticed this with other cars)
