good question... i assume , when u r shooting the hot air baloon... it's almsot impossible to meter the sky properly, i mean u meter the sky , the balloon underexposed , u meter the balloon sky over exposed... wat i can think of is... adapt the CPL filter , then meter the hot balloon... with 1 stop down... so by then u should be able to get the sky detail recorded properly... n then for the balloon will looks underexposed by abit, but u only need to adjust in lightroom or cs5 for abit to tune up just for the balloon part.... so u get the sky n the balloon... rather than u lose either of it...
if any si fuu disagree and have better thought , pls do hesistate to point out my mistake

CPL to polarize the lightings, but it will work in the morning and evening only. I usually have no other choice but to edit it as RAW and fill the dark spot. Else need to do HDR which I dun like certain picture to have so much contrast in it. Hmm..maybe I not good in HDR yet.

I don't know if this is correct: shoot with smaller aperture to get the maximum detail of sky and balloon, fire the flash if is needed.
Sorry bro, I think you dun get my idea. Balloon so big, flash won't reach.

My 2 cents is shoot with matrix-metering to get the most of the sky or you may manual meter your shots for getting the background sky expose correctly. Lit your subject with off-camera flash or strobe and get the shots. I might be wrong. Just sharing my thoughts though
Haha..I wish I can do light painting on the subject..too bad it's so high..
