Electronic wallet is one of the major use case for NFC (although I don't see it will come to our shore very soon).
Other usage of NFC are to automate some tasks on your phone, as an enabler for marketing (facebook like, foursquare checkin, twitter follow etc.), enabler for wifi/bluetooth coonectivity, ticketing, access control and many many more.

the NFC chip is in the phone. the NFC antenna is in the battery. same like galaxy nexus.
