It's not often that wily foxes are outwitted by other members of the animal kingdom.
But this supposedly cunning creature seemed to be taken by surprise when a skunk offered up a typically stinky reception.
The black and white animal reacted with speed when the inquisitive fox came sniffing around him in Lavaltrie, near Montreal, Canada.
Amateur photographer Jocelyn Lafond managed to capture the whole episode on camera - including the astonished visitor's look of sheer disgust.
The 41-year-old carpenter said: 'It was really funny to watch their interaction.
'The fox had such a ridiculous expression after getting sprayed.
'I was so close and tried not to move in case I alerted them to my presence.
'Hopefully I will see something like this again while I'm out shooting film.'
The snapper added: 'The fox started to sniff at the air a couple of minutes before the skunk appeared.
'At first the fox was very interested in the skunk and probably thought it could become a nice dinner.
'But the skunk looked calm and refused to pay much attention to the him.
'And when the fox finally felt the smell from the skunk it probably understood why.
'Looks can be deceiving and the skunk clearly knows how to defend itself.'
