Hey peoples, I'm looking for an effect pedal as my amp has a very muddy overdrive on the lower pitched strings despite tinkering with all the settings(its a Yamaha Ga-10).
I'm wondering if I should get the Boss OD-3 or DS-1 or the Os-2. Can anyone tell me the prices and where to get the best deal? any other suggestions are appreciated. I'll be focusing on playing punk rock btw. Thanks.

HAHA! Same amp as my old one. Dude, it's not even OVERDRIVE! It's only drive. tongue.gif
It doesn't even have a gain dial!

For ur punk rock, I recommend a DS-1.

Hmm..The Ds-1 is around rm170 from what they say. What abt the Od-3 and Os-2? I'm beginning to think all i need is a distortion pedal though... and did i just get whackerized? haha. thanks for the input so far anyway. biggrin.gif

mwthemovie : with your small amp, don't expect much from any pedal. I never tried Od and Os pedals, but i own a DS1 and i find it pretty cool when it comes to give a wide range of classic rock tones, from high-octane crunch to "light" metal. It can simulate convingcingly an overdrive if you put the gain knob at zero.

Of course I'm biased, but it's a good do-it-all pedal. And it's cold, so you might find your tone to be a bit "cleaner" in the low pitched strings (can't be sure about this though..)

Yeah..thats a concern - with the pedal not solving the tone problem. But Is there a 15 watt amp worth purchasing? I guess the practice amps dont really differ much in terms of quality...

if you have already a 10w, you should get at least a 30w... otherwise it's like buying a kancil because you're tired of your kelisa laugh.gif

Aha..but I spose I wont be able to afford a 30 watt one. Hmmm.... I wont be gig worthy anytime soon so i guess a 15 watt would suffice for the next 12 months. haha. I should be checking the prices now wink.gif

it's about a few hundreds bucks more... rather than wasting 400 bucks for nothing.

you don't buy a 15w if you already own a 10w. no difference. same speaker size, same non-existant headroom...
you'd better off with a pedal, that you will be able to reuse with your next amps.

I have the OD3 and I dare say this is BOSS best pedal. Like the name implies, it is only an overdrive but the amount of gain for this pedal is quite generous.

Depending on the amp your are using, this pedal can actually go to distortion territory. But on a more general level, it has enough gain for Stones, Aerosmith, GN'R rhythm, ACDC, the usual hardrock and classic rock stuff.

This is one of the very few overdrive pedals that actually works very well with SS amps. Into a tube amp however, it is a great booster for gain and solo.

The best thing about this overdrive is that it doesn't cut the bass unlike the tube screamer and SD1. It is also very dynamic pedal, allowing you to clean up your sound with your guitar's volume. Another plus is that the OD3 doesn't eat batteries for breakfast, lunch, and dinner unlike the Metal Zone. Also, it doesn't coloured your tone, allowing your guitar's natural sound to come through.

It is a highly recommended pedal if you aim to recreate the classic sounds of the 60s, 70s, and even some 80s sounds. Only drawback is that it is also one of boss most expensive pedal, retailing at around rm340, that is the price of a Metal Zone.

I got it new when Bentley had a sale for less than RM280 and it is worth every cent.

I do agree...10w to 15w are like minor SURBO implemention on a car laugh.gif
Having a bigger amp is not the case of gig worthy or not. It's for the tone.

Of course, not those half/full stack thingie. laugh.gif

argh....Pedal or Amp? If any pedal can clean up my tone I'd happily go for it. but on the other hand, the Cube 30 looks pretty damn tempting. Any ideas on the price of the Cube>? The Star printed rm1050..which is well...not very encouraging to say the least...

"After some playing, here's my review of the VOX AD30VT!

But be warned, this review is coming from a relatively new guitar player, around 1 year old or so, who hasn't been exposed to as much music as the experienced members here, and isn't as skilled as them either.

Price: RM850 from RM1000
From: CK Music, Kuala Lumpur"

you can have a 30watts amp for 850W. I'm sure can get same discount on cube 30.

Yup, u definately can bring down the price of the Cube. It's damn powerful i tell u laugh.gif
You got to set some priority, if u want to continue the quest of the tweaking your tone, pedals might be better option since u alrdy have an amp.

To me i would rather get an amp rather than getting pedals to boost the GA-10.

been there done that, most if not all of the people I asked said it's not worth to splurge to improve on the GA-10. so, I saved up to get the Vox AD30VT. if you wanna get the cube 30, it's up to you. I saw it for RM990 at Rhapsody Midvalley earlier this year. Sure can get discount. Especially now that the year end sales are going on.

chapree, buying a new better amp can aid you in tweaking your tone also what.. but of course pedals are a more wallet friendly way.

my verdict is: save up for a new 30W amp, the wait is worth it.

guys, you can't just postpone a GAS attack... you buy now AND save up for later at the same time. It's weird logic but that's the way it works wink.gif

any more opinions about those BOSS pedals ?

i do believethat the amp is the main gear in your rig that will most influence your tone
go try for yourself...
no matter how good the guitar is... through a crappy amp it'll sound like shit
dont limit yourself to beginner packages...
you'll find taht with a few extra hundred you'll get a  much better deal

@mwthemovie: indeed this board rocks. biggrin.gif what amp are u planning to get? CK Music is now offering a 20% discount on the Vox AD30VT. So now it's RM800. Roland Cube 30 should be priced around the same, give or take a few dollars.

Oh, if the reason for the pedals are to boost the GA-10, then no way man. You not gonna bring that 10w amp to gig in the first place. Pedals meant to shape your tone...booster pedals were meant to boost your shaped tone, not the amp hehehe

Personally for me, i'll buy a bigger, gig-worthy amp to have my signature tone to bring everywhere. But of course, it's always worthy to buy a new amp when u get tired of the old one laugh.gif

the pedall is off ?? and it affects the sound ?
try the following :
- if you twist the knobs with the pedal off, any modification of the sound ?
- if you remove the battery from the pedal, is the sound still going thru ?
- are you runniong on battery or on AC adaptor ?

xcude / so your pedal is not using a pass-by, and the sound disturbance are not due to the "active" circuit of your pedal. I would recommend you send it back where you bought it and get it fixed / exchanged : there's a defect in the supposedly "silent" circuit IMO...

you set your amp at level = 3 (let's say) and clean settings, play it w/o pedal, remember the sound.
add the pedal btw the amp and your guitar, don't touch the amp's settings. how's the sound compare to before ? The answer to that question is what matters...

Haha... solution, you need a guitar amp! XD

Like Pix said, it might be because your pedal doesn't have true bypass and even when it's switched 'off', the pedal's still sucking your tone and perhaps adding a little overdrive to it. Have you tried other pedals with the TV amp?
It could be a defect, but it could also be the nature of the pedal circuit. smile.gif

xcude, it all depends how it is supposed to work. Boss pedals are usually not using a TRUE by-pass : they still affect the sound. how to know it's true bypass?
1- even when switched off, the sound is different than without the pedal in the chain
2- no battery in the pedal, thus the sound is not going thru (pedal is however switched off)
3- go check the specs on internet laugh.gif

With true bypass (higher end pedals), the sund will go thru without battery.

I'd say your problem is the pedal itself, because even if it does affect your sound, it shouldn't "boost" it. A "fake" bypass will just modifies the tone, not the volume/gain, but that's just what I use to believe. Maybe i'm wrong...
