I got an offer from Sime Darby Global Service Centre (Motor & Plantation) and Petronas CariGali (KLCC), i wonder which one is the best for accounting student to do internship (in term of getting experience)? Anyone that have experience in either one, how the environment and work culture in the company? How much salary is given?

Let me shared something with you. Last 2 years ago, when I need to undergo internship(as part of my study) I have been offered by three companies. All these companies are different in terms of business line- Telco, shipping, and construction. Internship at shipping company only last for 3days(since all network project are handled by vendor, they just exposed me to clerical tasks). Second, internship at construction company only last for ONE day. Lastly I decided to accept offer from the telco company. Because, my qualifications is from network engineering. Suprised what, I have gained more skills, knowledge, certs about mobile network.

Word of advice here, choose a company that suit with your education. Internship is not the moment to talk about salary, and benefits, as this is the right time for you to select a best company that will expose yourself to more skills and knowledge during the internship period. Usually, private company will give you RM 300/400/500 as allowance(depends on what company), but some company can paid you higher. And you also could get hired as staff once you finish your study.

Since you are accounting student, I suggest you to go to accounting firm. If you still have a time, do apply to any accounting firm here in msia such PWHC, E&Y etc. Both companies mentioned Sime Darby and Petronas is OK, but if I were in your choose, I'll accept offer from Petronas.

unfortunately, i dont think i qualify for big 4..edi apply all four firm..got rejected by KPMG..experience is more important then salary, however, honestly, i still require allowance for monthly expense..do u have reason why Petronas is better than Sime Darby to take intern in accounting or it just for "future benefit"?

if any big4 firm offer me placement, i'll reject both company.

yes, go for private company because they will provide you with internship allowance.. but nowadays, gov company also provided the practical trainee with allowance, but they will give u on daily basis.. if you come to office, you will get the allowance..

simedarby and petronas both are mnc.. but i choose petronas because more well-known in fact it will give u a gd image in your resume.. sime darby also ok, but i give an opinion based on my preferred company..

just use the discoverpetronas site..follow the instruction..if u shortlist, u will do pre screening first, than if pass, u will be selected.

Added on June 25, 2012, 2:36 pmBump my question..i got these two choice..both give me allowance rm500. However if work at petronas are more costly to me..my friend said that both sime darby n petronas give almost the same job scope. N if long term, sime darby are more better in absorbing trainee to staff. Petronas much more harder to absorb. So dilemma right now to choose which one. If petronas harder to absorb staff, is it worth my time and money?

Ya my friend also said the same. Only Dagangan get rm500, the rest of petronas division rm800.

I hope in 2013, Dagangan increase to rm800, and other division can increase to rm1000. But very unlikely 1k lol.

Petronas has a lot of divisions. See your offer letter, if there's stated Petronas Dagangan or not.

Location I'm not sure... i think all KL at twin tower, only IT works sub at iPerintis. Others of course got location in T'ganu (kerteh), Johor, Miri, etc. Correct me if I'm wrong.

dunno whats the fuss bout big 4 internship anyway....i did it during my uni and honestly it does not take too much effort to get in
had over 100 other intern peers at just one firm (many of them barely did more than just vouching stuffs)

i would imagine petronas stands out much better in CV and much more exclusive

there are alot of petronas in twin tower and most of it in tower 1 and some in tower 2. e.g,petronas dagangan at tower 1 floor 30-33,carigali at tower 2. ngv tower 2. if your offer later only showed PETRONAS, it means u got to work at holding/ parent.

Never ever intern for Sime Darby, you will not learn anything. I was there for two months a year ago. Was attached to Industrial division (Accounts & Finance department as well). Out of 40 hours a weeks in the office, I was idling (literally sit down stare at the computer screen/wall) for 25 hours and the other 15 hours spent doing stapling, filing, sorting invoices.

All the other divisions (Plantation, Motors, Property, Energy & Utilities, Healthcare) are the same. Sime does not have a culture of training interns, you'll just be an office boy tops. Exception being if you intern in Group HQ or the Strategy departments in the divisions, then you have a 10% chance of learning something remotely tangible.

I-perintis give allowance up to 1k, so does Carigali Hess. Got few of my friends intern at those department.

One of my senior intern at Sime Darby Motors, and got absorbed after finished study.

Unlike Petronas, they hardly keep their intern. There's always got another intern to replace you.

Well, depending on your luck, maybe.

if you're looking for genuine working experience, working with smaller companies will much more benefits you.

in big organization, they tend to overlook the interns...

I think it's good just to sit down and observe office politics at work. Such skills can't be taught in universities.

So far my 1st month i have not much stuff to do and even bring my laptop to watch movie
But,I had been allocated quite many of task right now...
Everything is okay and i had adopted their culture
My malay fren could go to pray for more than 2 hours (intern and contract staff)
Haha...I ll doubt it for my future career sweat.gif

u are merely an intern.. don't tell me that u expect them to give u important and decision-making tasks straight away when u barely have the credibility to prove ur worth.. seriously, watching movies is the last thing i would do if i were in ur shoes..

anyway, since u have so much to say about their culture and work style, sound like u so kesian.. u better go and apply for shell or those chinaman companies la once u graduate.. don't bother with Petronas.. we don't need ppl who think they are too good to be here here..

This is just my personal opinion
I might know their culture since the 1st day
So,what to do
just adopt and accept
Agree intern doesnt have much decision can make
but just my personal opinion of the company
and its known by many chinese of course

quite busy recently because my manager finally give me lots of workload
gaining experience as well

they went for meeting thats why i mentioned watched movie..

i dont think i am good as we are still learning, just we have the rights to speak our opinions to those who wants to intern at there...

I am intern in Carigali as well...Honestly to say that it's quite bored for me as Chinese who go into this company
So far my 1st month i have not much stuff to do and even bring my laptop to watch movie
But,I had been allocated quite many of task right now...
Everything is okay and i had adopted their culture
My malay fren could go to pray for more than 2 hours (intern and contract staff)
Haha...I ll doubt it for my future career  sweat.gif

hello guys just wanna share something...i used to have my internship training at one of the big 4 accounting firm..the monthly allowance gave by the firm was just reasonable....about the job scope as an intern, i can say it's actually depends on the intern himself whether he wants to learn or not..if you have some effort to ask your senior you'll definitely do that..and your seniors would also eventually delegate some works which require decision making/sound judgement when they observed that you are reliable for the works.
always try to express your personal knowledge so that there would be a discussion among yourself and them..and when they ask for some opinions, never be silent..try your best to correspond back to whatever they asked tho it may sound silly or random to you...

bout the photocopying thingy or whatever sort of admin or ad hoc jobs that your seniors might give to you..my advice is just do them while you still have guts to do those kind of jobs..you won't die because of them.

another good thing that you can actually get when you got the chance to be in big 4 is that you can improve your communication and social skills..

Though I do wonder if there's anybody inside right now who I could ask about the operations, to get some ideas about my tasks. I'm too shy to ask IRL haha.
