Personally I think that 2.1s will be the biggest that'll be comfortable for road use.

If you're wanting to use the same bike for everything like I do, you'll definitely need to have 2 sets of tires. Besides, using knobby tires for road will really wear them down quick too. I'll rather spend money on cheaper slick tires for road use than have to wear down my more expensive knobbies on the road.
