You could try books by Maria V. Snyder! She has a couple of series that are pretty good.

QUOTE(andychai910904 @ Apr 4 2012, 10:12 PM) Example of fantasy novel: Harry Potter series. Fantasy genre commonly uses magic or supernatural for the story plot or theme. This post has been edited by mintyais: Apr 5 2012, 07:12 PM |

Oh Mai ... This is old but I might as well post.
Please please do not say Harry potter. It is like saying to watch vampire movie. Watch twilight. If you are looking for fantasy, start with Brandon Sanderson Patrick Rothfuss Abercrombie If you are looking for modern fantasy, look over at Jim Butcher Andychai, fantasy genre are not dreamy or unrealistic. It's like saying sci-fi is realistic and can happen soon. To quote recent work of fantasy movies, you can look at The Game of thrones which is a strong fantasy world building but focuses on a political, moral and other aspects. |

For starters, stay away from LOTR, its windy, its old school language and writing style. Tolkien built a world that has been based on a template by many modern author, after a while it does get boring. Dwarfs must be short and sarcastic and funny, elf must be aloof, tree hugger and uses bow. Orcs are stupid and brutish.
Its a formula that have been recycled so many times, it is boring. Seriously. The Name of The Wind = Patrick Rothfuss The Way of Kings = Brandon Sanderson Mystborn = Brandon Sanderson The First Law Trilogy = Joe Abercrombie The Night Angel Trilogy =Brent Weeks and if you like gritty no hold bar anti-heroes fantasy novel My personal favourite recommendation The Demon Cycle = Peter V Brett. |

If you are looking a bit more old school, go for:
The Belgariad and Mallorean series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Belgariad The Death Gate Cycle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_Gate_Cycle These books really got me hooked up to fantasy .. They are all multibook series but you can always start with Book 1 |
