A poor game considering we were playing at home. One would have expected the team to bounce back especially against a Wigan side who were distinctively average. If anything we failed to capitalise on this by isolating Suarez up front on his own in the first half. I would have thought that given the circumstances, we'd have started with two strikers, adopting a more positive looking formation. By the time we went behind and had to chase the game, Wigan were literally defending with 11 men in their own half.

Adryan, ignore the manc. He'll go into hiding again if they end up winning feckall at the end of the season. Typical of a club whose mantra is based only on winning.

OT so please don't reply to this. It's just that I promised Jin I'd help him spread the word. Have a watch.

QUOTE(Adryan @ Mar 27 2012, 07:29 AM)
Finally, one who speaks sense.

Like I said earlier, the older United fans are more respectful because they probably have been in the situation Liverpool are currently in (not winning titles and being made as a midtable side) and that the trolls are probably teenagers who grew up in the 1990s, and whom probably don't know anything about United's history. I onced asked a Manc when was Man United formed and he was like 'I don't care abourtdates like that'. Heck, I even won a prize at a Liverpool-United game when they had a quiz during half time and the question was 'What was Man United's original name?' (Newton Heath) and none of them knew. That my friend, defines glory hunters.

It's also certain there are Liverpool fans like that, who love trolling at other team's threads/forums but it's just that, in my personal opinion, United 'fans' do it the most.

I have many United friends and we share good banter and jokes and some of them even joke around saying their best signing is Howard Webb and we just laughed.
I have in my closest circle of friends, 4 Man Utd fans. Out of the 4, two read and therefore know the club's history. One of them even follows RAWK which is a Liverpool forum, just to know more about us. Respect. He knows more about Liverpool and what does on day to day than most Liverpool fans. Not shy meh? One other only watches games when it's convenient and the other doesn't watch at all but still "celebrates" when they win. Go figure. Younger fans in general don't find knowing a club's history important. I know this because I started a "Real Fan" thread sometime back and the general opinion was that history isn't important. Watching every game is. Well I beg to differ but there isn't a need to get into this again. Therefore I think it's safe to assume that the reason many of us think Malaysian Man Utd fans in particular don't know jack about the club's history is because they comprise mainly of younger fans (due to "recent" success), and in this day and age, younger fans in general don't think the past is important. You'll note that many younger Liverpool fans don't even know the lyrics to YNWA, let alone know about our history. Those that do read need to do their best to educate and stress the importance of needing to know about our past especially as Liverpool fans. It's sometimes hard to do so however without sounding condescending especially when they are reluctant to listen.

Like you I enjoy friendy banter with not older, but more seasoned Man Utd supporters. I feel that many don't even understand why we hate the other, and this dates back to the days when both port cities were fighting for economic superiority. A lot of the hate you feel these days are manufactured. Fans were thought to hate the other without truly realising why? The reason that trolls are mostly Man Utd supporters is because they are the current dominant force in the league and therefore have a bigger number of younger supporters, which makes up the majority of posters in this forum. Older fans tend to stay away or post less frequently because it's really hard to have a decent discussion with someone who knows nuts about their club or has only a very basic understanding of the game. Sadly, now that clubs are whoring themselves to a global audience and portraying themselves as a brand, you get a lot more of this kind around. Fans who support the club but don't watch games. Eh?

In response to your post on having a huge transfer kitty, I believe John Henry has already said that he will provide funds but only a modest amount. The rest of the kitty will have to come from selling players, like Aquilani who we will most likely cash in on for only half the price we signed him for.

The article I posted earlier on King Kenny earlier talks about what the future will look like for us if FIFA stick to their guns and impose Financial Fairplay and the HG rule (6+5). Look at the teams above us and count how many HG players they have now. Most will struggle when they are forced to part with their foreign imports. We're just paying the price now instead of later, and this is in reference to our trimming of the wage bill as well. Delayed gratification. This is one reason I believe King Kenny will be given another season at least. Of course, if FIFA decide to scrap either rule, we'll be on the short end of the stick.

QUOTE(carloz28 @ Mar 27 2012, 12:16 PM)
While I do advocate having more HG players in the team as a response to the FIFA ruling, I would prefer Liverpool to acquire them through the academy and not paying astronomical fees to get them in.

Even so, if Liverpool wants to spend on British players, please eye carefully and pick the ones with REAL QUALITY and not the one season wonders.
What's the point of buying players but failing to utilize them to the max?

Looking at Charlie Adam, Carroll, Henderson and Downing, all of them did very well with their respective former teams last season but why can't they replicate the same performance in a Red shirt? OK, if the blame is not on the players, then something must be seriously wrong with our coaching staff, because we are turning their potential into mediocrity.

On the contrary, look at Mancs. SAF spent big on Keane(3.75 mil pounds, record signing at that time), Cole, Rio, Carrick, Hargreaves, Smith and Rooney and the rest of his British fledglings were promoted from the academy. All of them has become a mainstay in his team maybe apart from Cole, Smith and Hargreaves.
Given the time he spent in managing United, 3 BRIT duds over the last 20 years isn't exactly a bad transfer record, izzit?
*
It's been awhile since we've churned out quality youngsters from the academy, no big secret. However in Flanagan, Robinson, Kelly and Spearing, we have 4 graduates from the academy. 2 other young acquisitions have also made their first team appearances - Shelvey and Sterling. Rafa's work is paying off it seems. We should see more players coming through the ranks soon e.g. Coady, Amoo, Morgan and Wisdom.

The signing of Charlie Adam, Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing were largely to fill gaps. The departure of Fernando Torres and Raul Meireles meant we lost two very influential players. The latter was especially in fine form at the time. The voids they left behind were filled by Andy Carroll and Charlie Adam respectively. Henderson was signed to hopefully replace Stevie G some day soon and Downing was brought in to provide some much needed width with us having no naturally left footed midfielder at the time. I wouldn't go as far as to say that Adam and Downing were doing very well for their respective clubs prior to signing for us. Downing wasn't and still isn't an England regular and Adam only scored from deadballs. His was a case of being a big fish in a small pond. Seems to be out of his depth at the moment. He is the only one I've really lost hope in. I'm still harbouring hopes that Carroll and Henderson turn out to be gems like Lucas did. Downing isn't exactly a budding young player but he's been playing pretty well of late so no complaints there.

QUOTE(rickk @ Mar 27 2012, 05:04 PM)
So what u mean is we just gv them some times, be more patient until they really get improve, soon? hmm.gif
*
I advocate patience, yes. It does get to me when fans change their tune on a weekly basis. The saying that Rome wasn't built in a day seems lost on many. Will King Kenny ultimately turn us into a title winning side? It remains to be seen but a season and a half is hardly a fair amount of time given that we aren't attracting the top names in football and even if we do, we can't afford their wages. He has a 3 year contract and I think we owe it to him to see it through. Rafa and Houllier were in longer contracts and if we can afford them some patience, can we not afford the same to a man who is a living legend at the club? Yes KK has spent over $100 million pounds but his net outlay is just above $40 million. Why is this important? Simply because we didn't just add players to the squad, we lost two influential ones in the process. He's also had to clear out deadwood like Konchesky and Poulsen.

I stress again that both the owners and KK have advocated patience in that rebuilding process isn't going to happen overnight. Carroll and Henderson are seen as investments for the future and I suspect we'll see more young players being signed and ageing ones like Carra, Kuyt, Maxi, Stevie and Bellamy being phased out within the next 2-3 seasons. KK has already shown his desire to unearth young talent by playing the likes of of Flanagan and Robinson when we had an injury crisis in defence last season, instead of signing over on loan, something some managers may have opted to do. Jay Spearing and Martin Kelly have also racked up quite a lot of playing time under him. We used to ask why we never used our youngsters and when we do, fans now ask why we don't start Bellamy, Maxi and Kuyt every game? Which is it now? Young players need playing time. KK had said at the beginning of the season that we aren't going to win the title this season and if we challenge, it will be a bonus, yet fans expect instant results. So whose fault is it when we can't manage our own expectations?

I find it a little unfair that the blame lies solely on the shoulders of KK. It was NESV who decided to invest in young British talent was it not? It was NESV who imposed the new wage bill. This is of course in anticipation of Financial Fairplay and the 6+5 rule. Steve Clarke is also just as much to blame for tactics if the naysayers want to have a go. KK has had to work within certain constraints, unlike say Man City who have heaps of money to spend. Man City may win the league but they can just as easily end up with squadoosh this season while we have won our first cup in 6 seasons and may add another to that.

On a personal note, I have nothing but total respect for KK and I like him as a man. When we signed Hodgson I was baffled and after a few interviews where he even contrived to criticise the fans, I hated him with passion and wanted nothing more than for him to go. I'm completely behind KK not because of blind faith, but because he's been there, done it, loves the club, and I think he deserves to serve out his tenure before we judge him. If we listened to fans here, we would have had 20 managers since we last won the title.

Again, spot on. As I've said, I'm not wearing my red-tinted glasses or anything but I've seen enough during his 14-15 months and know enough about the King that he can do a job. I'm not saying he 100% definitely will but he deserves a chance to do so.
*
That's all that we can ask, that we given him a chance and there's no one more deserving. I'd like to think what he's done for us in the past warrants it. I hope that everyone knows what he's done and how much he means to fans from those days.

QUOTE(carloz28 @ Mar 29 2012, 07:06 AM)
So how you guys actually justify progress?

Winning a Carling Cup and having a good run in the FA cup while continue to be humiliated by lesser teams in EPL? Not to mention that our record against the top teams is absolutely woeful?

Let's ignore the strides we've made off the pitch i.e. sponsorship deals, being debt free, planning a new stadium, etc. Here's how I would say we have progressed. Results have been poor especially on late so I'm not even going to go there. I just think that more often than not, we've tried to play positive football, something I personally like to see. Yes, maybe winning ugly e.g. Mourinho's Chelsea is more effective but having seen us play pass & move football back in the late 80s/early 90s, I welcome the fact that KK has tried to implement this again after some pretty negative football under Houllier, to a lesser extent Rafa, and of course Hodgson. We have to consider that the team is playing a different brand of football now and like I've reiterated many times, we've dominated teams most of the time although we haven't been getting positive results. This to me is an indication that we are moving in the right direction and I do hope that as time passes, we play good football consistently.

QUOTE(carloz28 @ Mar 29 2012, 07:06 AM)
Liverpool used to be a contender for EPL every season when Houllier and Rafa were in charge.[/color] OK we didn't really win the EPL or fighting neck to neck with the teams at the top, but then again we were also not that far off from the top. Sure there was a gap of 10-20 points but still we were floating around the top five consistently. Here now we are languishing at 7th and Newcastle has 8 points above us after selling their best player to us? Even 7th position seems to be in danger with Sunderland closing in from below. Oh, we can't even retain our best players?

We did finish 2nd under Rafa once but towards the end of their Liverpool careers, we were out of the running by Christmas or they wouldn't have been 'released'. Alan Pardew is doing an amazing job at Newcastle but if you look at the other teams above us, how many have managers in the first year of their tenure? Not saying it's impossible for a rookie manager to win the league. Just saying that 3 years isn't a big ask.

QUOTE(carloz28 @ Mar 29 2012, 07:06 AM)
If I'm honest enough, only Mid table teams will be rejoiced with the achievements and form we have this season. Remember, this is LIVERPOOL and the last time I checked, success can be only achieved if one aims high....and not lowering expectations and lie to ourselves and saying we have done a good job all season. We the fans, don't expect KK to win the EPL title now....but come on guys, not the current state we are at now.

PS: There was a time in Liverpool when failing to enter Champions League is consider a DISASTER.
*
We should hold high standards but it doesn't mean we cannot be realistic. We aspire to be back where we were but I don't expect it to happen over night. It's good to have big dreams and goals but we haven't won the league for over 2 decades. Do we really expect KK to lead us to the summit after just over a year at the helm, without the money the likes of Man City has? Even they haven't won the Premiership yet. We are a big club with a great history and a loyal fanbase. A lot of us who have been fans for over 2 decades want nothing more than to see us at the summit again. Given the impatience of younger fans these days, I shudder to think how many will choose to stay around if we don't win it for another 20 years? We are a fallen giant, we have been for over a decade and to expect any manager to turn this around in a year is ludicrous.

I said earlier that consideration must be given to the fact that we've trimmed our wage bill and brought in HG players. We are probably the most prepared of all teams when Financial FairPlay and the 6+5 rule comes into effect. Teams like Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and even Man Utd will struggle a little at least to adapt. Can you imagine City losing half their overpaid stars? Chelsea? We've already earmarked young English players who are breaking into the first team.

The damage done to LFC didn't just start with Roy Hodgson. It started back from when Souness was at the helm, making dodgy signings and selling players in their prime. It started back when Rick Parry mystifyingly sold us to sponsors on the cheap, and we failed to capitalise commercially from our large fanbase. Unless we inherit millions of pounds over night, we are going to continue to pay the price for those failings. Thankfully, under new leadership, we've finally begun to address those issues.

On a final note, I'm rather disappointed at people calling for KK's head. This is a man who stood side by side with supporters when they needed it the most, after Hillsborough. This is a man who loves Liverpool more than many of us ever will. He brought joy to us both as a player and as a manager and how do we repay him? By calling for him to step down in his first full season in charge without giving him time to right the wrong in the team? How many here love Stevie G with all their heart? If he manages us one day, will we forget the moments he's saved us from defeat? What about Carra? Will we forget the times he's paid for fans tickets to Istanbul, or the times he's put his body on the line for us e.g. When he pulled both groin muscles in Istanbul or refused to leave the pitch even after breaking his leg? Will it all mean nothing 10 years from now? I for one think KK deserves more respect than he's getting from some parties. He has the club's best interest at heart and even if he doesn't deliver, he doesn't deserves to be disrespected.

How is this a moral lesson? Erik Edman used to play leftback for Spurs and scored a stunning goal from almost 40 yards out against us back in 2004 but hasn't scored a goal for club or country since, to date. He's still an active player mind you. Point is that every forward goes through a bad spell in front of goal and to asses one's goalscoring prowess and pit it against a defender's after just one goal, is anything but reasonable. Even Raul who looks rejuvenated at Schalke went through a 30 game streak without scoring whilst at Real Madrid.

A football club needs stability, in terms of manager's positions, owners and players. If we're going to keep changing managers, we won't be moving forward because we'll be back to the same stage every single time. Imagine if Man United had sacked Alex Ferguson when he went trophyless for his first three years ... they probably won't have 19 league titles to brag about and probably wouldn't have won another two European Cups. Too many fans nowadays wanting instant success. Think about it, in times like these, it's what being a football fan of a club, is all about.

Rome wasn't built in a day. I agree we were Rome before but we never remained as Rome since Kenny stepped down on that dreadful day in February 1991. If Manchester United took around more than 25 years to win their first title (1992/1993) and last title (1966/1967), our turn is only around the corner. While we may equal or surpass that lame record, it is worth remembering we also won alot of other trophies in the 20 years+ we've gone titleless.

I'd avoid media as well because most of the time, they just want a story and not everything is always true. Potentially, also possible that certain 'fans' come up with agendas. If we keep believing what we read, we don't need to be living in this life. There's a whole lot bigger picture than just believing what we read.

Indeed. A message from Gerard Houllier.

Why Liverpool fans wanted Hodgson sacked? Just off the top of my head...

1) Not very many wanted him appointed in the first place despite leading Fulham to the Eurocup Final, beating Juventus in the process, masking the fact that he managed just 1 away win the whole season.
2) His interviews reeked of a small club manager's mentality. Often showing fear of losing big players, bending over the taking it up the arse from SAF, offering delusional analysis' (e.g. playing our best football against Everton who demolished us).
3) His self claim to be one of the most respected managers in Europe and demanding respect for it.
4) His criticism of the fans.

I didn't even need to think of the reasons above. Pretty sure I can come up with more if I put my mind to it.

Like I said, in the end of the day it's all about results you churn out week in week out.

His Fulham could have lost to Juventus, he can have oratory skills as a 6 year old kid, riding on Fergie's d*** all day long and claim himself as the new Special One
and trust me nobody would care less as long as he is winning games with Liverpool.

On the other corner, we have King Kenny, respected figure in Liverpool, legend of all legends with 3 European Cups on his back, winner of multiple league titles and championed Blackburn to the heights of EPL. Adores Liverpool fans to bits and gave them free tickets to Istanbul. A good man he is one.
But he's clearly losing the plot with Liverpool so how now?

The point is, if you take out all KK's credentials and past achievements out of the equation, and trust me, he would have gotten the sack this morning. The only thing that is holding them back from doing so is the Carling Cup victory.
*
The same could have been said of Rafa had he not won the Champions League in his first season. Our performance in cup competitions took some attention away from the fact that we weren't improving in the league, with the exception of the season we finished 2nd.

It is indeed about results but do note that Liverpool are a team where sentiment does sometimes superceed it. For better or worse, it's what makes us unique, that we have looooong memories. That we remember the past more than anyone else. That we appreciate effort over talent. You may accuse me of being old school and I would agree with you. For all his talent, Luis Suarez comes under constant criticism from former players like Phil Thompson, Alan Kennedy, and such because of this attitude, not his ability. On the contrary, Jamie Carragher who is hardly the most gifted player around, has earned legendary status at Anfield. If we lose this part of us, we are no different from everyone else. Yes, results matter but there are more important things I feel. I disagree with the notion that it is all about winning games, not when it comes to Liverpool. Players and managers usually get the sack after the fans turn against them. From what I can tell from watching games, many fans have yet to turn on King Kenny, me included.

Liverpool has a history of being very patient with our managers, with the exception of Roy Hodgson so whether or not someone else other than King Kenny would have been sacked by now remains to be soon, however likely. Hodgson left by mutual consent though it doesn't take a genius to figure out that he was pressured out of the club, by the owners, by the board but notably, by the fans. So the question is, will the new owners follow tradition, or will they bring out the axe with King Kenny?

QUOTE(maranello55 @ Apr 2 2012, 01:53 PM)
rightly so.
King Kenny is respectable man. He knows when to call it a day.
if u ask me, its not entiely his fault. Our line up last nite was attacking-minded. but crosses werent met, shots were inches away fri the bar, were miraculously blocked, by hand on one occasion and not seen by the officials and a dive before a clear open goal.

Sounds like we cant blame it all on the King.
*
There is a need to be objective here. I started questioning Rafa during his 4th year at the club and many posters here were defending him, citing contributing factors like the situation with the owners, players not trying their best and such. Suggestions that Rafa had made some rather questionable signings and tactical decisions were swept aside by comments like, "he's a tactical genius". Now here we are with King Kenny, who is fast losing supporters on this forum at least. He's facing the blunt of the blame despite working under his own constraints e.g. wage bill, transfer policy, underperforming players, etc. Rafa's a good man, I like him but so is Kenny Dalglish. Why can we not afford him the same respect and understanding? We remember Rafa for not only winning the Champions League but also for his support of Hillsborough, turning up in the bar to watch a football game with fans, and his appreciation for Bill Shankly, the man whom our success was built on. We remember him not purely for footballing reasons, and this is one of those things that make us different, like it or not. Just because many weren't around when King Kenny was last manager, it doesn't mean his deeds and stories should be forgotten.

in your opinion? what should be done now?

rafa era where i can see liverpool playing different type of football. Indeed alot of surprises

houllier era, very defensive football but this is when i see reds playing as a team.. every part of the team is doing its job, the def is strong, midfield does both roles well. Atk is weak but each chance of atk is not wasted.
*
Firstly I think everyone needs to get a reality check, myself included. In my opinion, one season isn't long enough to gauge the calibre of a manager who has completely transformed the way we are playing, having turned the unit from a defensive one into an attacking one. We were hard to beat during the first half of the season and for some reason have lost the plot since the following happened, whether by coincidence or not.

1) losing Lucas to injury
2) losing Agger to injury
3 losing Glenn Johnson to injury

More amazingly,

4) having Gerrard return to the side.

In terms of new signings, I was never a fan of Charlie Adam and it does look like he's out of his depth. He should reach the peak of his prowess very soon at his age. It remains to be seen if the likes of Jordan Henderson and Andy Carroll will live up to expectations or are they already the finished article? I personally think they will get better but what's clear is that they aren't prepared to shoulder the burden of a first team player at the club. In Downing, we have one of the only left footed English players in England and we were crying out for some width, bearing in mind our policy of buying English players, and please do not fault KK for this. Not his call.

KK is on a 3 year contract and for all he's done I think we can at least afford him the time to right his wrong. Not all managers get it right the first time round. Rafa brought in a lot of youth players who didn't cut it, he just never played them while KK has given them the opportunities they so craved for in the past. Hell you get posters here asking for the likes of Raheem Sterling and other youngsters to be played all the time. Lest we forget, Jordan Henderson is 21, John Flanagan is 19, Martin Kelly is 20 as is Jonjo Shelvey. The more senior "youngsters", Andy Carroll and Jay Spearing are both still 23. It's obvious to me that we are building a squad for the future which is what the new owners have always been saying despite fans expecting to challenge for the title this year. Since we are building for the future, is it not possible to wait for that future to arrive? Like i keep repeating, KK is here for 3 years, not a whole lot of time in the bigger scheme of things, at least for me. What's another 3 years when I've been waiting for over 20?

Some of the senior players aren't performing, bar Martin Skrtel, Luis Suarez (who for all his guile really should be scoring more often), Dagger, and maybe even Enrique. The rest have been disappointing though to be fair to Dirk Kuyt, he hasn't seen much playing time. This makes us ever more reliant on the young lads to deliver. Now which one of them stands out? If you ask me only Martin Kelly has shown the consistency to be a first team regular so far but with young players, it's always going to be a gamble. Look how many Fergie has shipped put over the years. Florent Sinama Pongolle and Anthony Le Tallec were joint top scores at the youth World Cup when we signed them and where are they now? Neil Mellor scored a wonder goal against Arsenal, ended up at Preston and had disappeared altogether now. Mark Gonzalez was tipped to be the next big thing for Chile but has anyone heard from him since? Leto? Paletta? The likes of Carroll, Henderson, Shelvey, Spearing, Kelly, Flanagan are a gamble and the only way we'll know if they will make the cut is by thrusting them into the first team and giving them competitive matches. It's why I keep saying that I want to play in the Europa Cup so we can play them there and not use the league as a training ground for them. There is a huge gap between the reserve league and th Premier League which is why foreign managers in particular have mooted the idea of having a B team play in the lower divisions with no possibility of promotion like the Barca and Real Madrid B sides. It's no secret that KK is a fan on the young lads having worked with the academy and I for one appreciate his willingness to give them first team opportunities. He's obviously hoping they'll flourish and blossom before his contract is up.

Forgive me for saying this but I feel those who don't appreciate was KK is trying to do are short sighted. I'm not saying he's made all the right decisions but I can at least see he has a vision. He will and has made mistakes and he has 2 more years to right them. I hate it when fans demand the team wins for them. The team owes us nothing. We owe it to the team to get behind them especially when they are trying to move in the right direction, a far cry from when we were under the previous owners who werent willing to spend a cent of their own money, fulfilled none of their promises and almost led to club into administration. How anyone can not appreciate the work that is being put into the club not just by KK but by the entire management team, is beyond me. In a time where we've been getting a huge amount of flak from the media and the team are being painted in a negative light, I'd expect each and everyone of us to give a good showing of solidarity, and show support to the club and those who are trying their best to wake a sleeping giant from its slumber, and laud the positive strides they've made, not criticse every mistake. The glass is either half empty or half full. Which is completely up to you.

I say we should give King Kenny his 3 years to see if the young lads will come good and if we can keep playing good, consistent attacking football which he favours. You cant judge him in the same way as you judge a manager who buys players he hopes will keep him in a job and takes little risk by purchasing players in or already passing their prime. KK has largely bought players who haven't yet reached their peak with the exception of Stewart Downing. Big difference if you ask me.

agree to some, disagree to some.
Time is needed to prove, but dont u think its quite critical already? Anyhow season coming to the end, so doesnt matter anymore. If KK gets to stay then he gets another season to prepare. But Euro coming, its gonna be another tiring pre-season for players.

Thats ur opinion, so i respect them.
But as for my opinion, i felt the players are not trying hard enough. I see them really lack the fighting spirit or maybe its just liverpool style of once opponent lead then they are doomed.

nice essay btw.

I would say that some of the lads have not been performing. Not sure if it's because they aren't trying. One things for sure, KK is phasing out the older players which is why you see the likes of Maxi Rodriguez, Dirk Kuyt, Jamie Carragher and Fabio Aurelio on the bench despite how well Kuyt and Maxi in particular were playing last season. I think the young lads who have been fielded such as Martin Kelly, Jay Spearing, Jonjo Shelvey, and even Jordan Henderson are trying. Andy Carroll I must admit doesn't try often enough because in the rare moments that he's wanted to win balls and compete, he has been able to. If you look at the team we've fielded in the league this season, you'll note that the likes of Pepe Reina, Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel, Jose Enrique, Martin Kelly/Glenn Johnson, Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Jay Spearing, Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez have started most often. With the exception of Reina who as a keeper, is about at his peak now, how many players do you see over 28 in that list? If you consider that Jonjo Shelvey and John Flanagan are featuring of late, we have a pretty young squad with Skrtel, Reina, Agger, Enrique, Johnson and Downing being the "seniors" and even then they are all at the most, 27 with the exception of Pepe.

Is it critical yet? Critical was when we got relegated, or were just hovering above the relegation zone with a very real possibility of going into administration. If that had happened, banks like RBS would have full control over the club, sold all our players to finance our debt and put the club up for sale. That would have been a real bummer to say the least. Given that we are drafting younger players into the side, I don't think not reaping the rewards after less than a season is a disaster.

maybe age factor does make experience lacking however what i m trying to stress from the start is their effort of trying....
Also i would wanna see the whole team performing as a team.. some nice team play, rather individualism which i felt is quite serious with likes of Carroll. Sometimes Suarez.

To be honest, win or lose not biggy, but as a fan i will still salute them for putting a good fight atleast i felt they did their level best.

I personally think that if ever reaches relegation zone then its way too critical, even if they dont hit relegation, they failed to get european participation they amount of revenue lost would also make big considerations to shareholders....

I have to clause this before its being made generalize by someone which turning it into flame bait.

I SAID THIS AS MY PERSONAL OPINION.

With the exception of Carroll and Adam, who do you think isn't trying hard enough?

Reina is obviously frustrated and that tells me he cares. No doubting Carra's commitment. I also think that Agger and Skrtel are having an awesome season as a tandem and it's sad to see the former get injured. Enrique runs his socks off almost every game and Kelly has hardly put a foot wrong. Jay Spearing is a hard worker though he may be pretty limited. Henderson has been well, a disappointment and I can't figure if it's because he isn't trying or because he's crap. Suarez tries but is over elaborate at times. I see Downing putting in some effort as well.

If anything, I think Stevie can raise his game.

I also feel the need for a disclaimer.

I SAID THIS AS MY PERSONAL OPINION.

may i join the discussion?

Duke... you said about KD has a vision, but how can you be satisfied with a vision that is making us losing 6 in 7 games? and look at the teams we lost to. 2 of the relegation teams. no problem?

I'll keep this short because I'll just be repeating myself. King Kenny's vision is to build a team who will one day challenge for the premiership, I believe that he and John Henry have always been consistent with this. It is the reason why older statesmen earning high salaries were replaced by younger players with the potential to yield higher returns in future should they develop to be Premiership stars. Yes the operative word here is "should". I said earlier that investing in young players will always come with risks but as the saying goes, "you risk nothing, you get nothing". A "vision" is long term. How is 3 quarters of a season, long term? How is having the team play a completely different brand of football from Roy Hodgson, not a sign that he is attempting to realise his vision?

there should be no mistake - any manager coming into the Liverpool hot seat will know the job is to deliver the league title and bring the club back to where it should be - the best in england. hence i believe even Roy himself knows what he needs to do. also, i am sure he had his own vision as well?

Please do share what you think Hodgson's vision was? He bought Meireles but what was the point of buys like Konchesky and Poulsen? Both were ageing players past their prime. Reminds of of Souness. I've shared what Kenny's vision (or at least my interpertation of it is). Yes, any manager that steps into the Anfield hotseat knows that fans want the league title, but after one season? Really?

QUOTE(Petre @ Apr 5 2012, 12:17 AM)
in regards of risks from investments, buy young and cheap, the risk is the player may not fullfill his promise. but what about buying established but expensive? its all give and take if you ask me. you cant have cheap and good all the time, of course, every investment should be a calculated risk, but making investment does not always mean buying cheap stuff, dont you agree? this was what happened to most of rafa's buys. but look at torres, a high price investment but the return was excellent. look at carroll, we bought 35m and what did we get?

Our buying policy (not KK's decision btw) is to buy players who may yield high returns on future. What type of player do you think fits this description? If you ask me, it's a) English and b) young ( at least not approaching their 30's). Both Henderson and Carroll were youth internationals - calculated risks. Torres cost a lot and we sold him for a huge sum because he was still relatively young. Carroll like I said earlier, is a gamble but given how he was playing for Newcastle, it was calculated. He still isn't the finished article and to predict that he'll be a flop for the rest of his life is nostradamus like.

Do I really need to get into this again. What do you think his vision was? Do share.

Duke. my point was, Roy's vision, if he had one, was shite.

and KD's so called vision is beginning to look like one. and we've done this before, 35m for andy carroll. if you were manager, would you have done it?

you seems to be convinced of KD's vision. i dont see how can the persistence to play off-form and under performing players can convince you so much

we are no barca and our academy havent really produced enough talents. to be able to keep being competitive, we cannot avoid buying. this is the whole point of buying players anyway. i dont know who is the genius behind the transfer policy, but if they had the goal of getting back into the CL (where the money is), then we could not have spent so much on the type of transfers that we did. 35m. what a long list of players, much better ones that we could have bought. now we are nowhere CL material and probably cant attract the best players to come, heck we might not even look attractive to younger prospects. of course this is no problem if we are barca and producing best players on our own. or are we?

so unless our players start showing up, and with us not having any faith in our youngsters... good luck because by the looks at the moment we at best, 6th best in england

I can't seem to understand why no one can comprehend the fact that buying young English talent was a decision made by NESV, NOT King Kenny. The decision on which players to buy is also made partially by Comolli so why the heck is everyone laying the blame solely on Kenny? Carloz, you seemed convinced it was all KK, might I ask why? I didn't see anyone complaining until now. Hindsight is 20-20 isn't it?

Who else is KK going to play? He can only play the players he has no? I ser posters crying out for youth players to be given a chance but hasn't KK done that already? If you think players like Jonjo Shelvey, Martin Kelly, etc aren't up to mark, then what makes you think that the next tier of youngsters ie Raheem Sterling would take to the first team like a duck to water and not be another Nabil El-Zhar? So who would you play if you feel his picks are underperforming? It's impossible to please fans sometimes because by nature, we like to complain. I see people demanding that young players be given a chance and then expecting them to be a Messi and turn into a star instantly. Realistic? I think not. Even Lucas took 3 seasons to settle in.

You keep harping about the 35 million shelled out for Carroll and yes, it was a large sum of money but it at least showed the owners were willing to put their money where their mouths were. Torres left us in a lurch and we didn't exactly have a lot of time to negotiate and look for a bargain did we? Would you rather we had not spent any money? Also, it isn't like we spent 35 without getting anything in return. You are basing your opinion on what you currently see but are you telling me you're certain Carroll will never get better? Based on?

Maybe you haven't any faith in youngsters but if you think KK doesn't, you and I must be supporting different Liverpool team in parallel universes. In my universe the likes of Carroll, Henderson, Shelvey, Spearing, Kelly, Flanagan, and Coates are either young or products of the academy.

You do realize why we're buying young English talent? i.e. potential to yield high returns and impending 6+5 rule? We're prepping for this before any of the other big sides and I call this foresight, which unlike hindsight isn't 20-20, which is why everyone prefers to complain about the wrongs that were done rather than the rights that may be coming. It's safer. Wy did John Henry say his plan is a long term one? He wants to make the club profitable and for that he's looking into all channels of income including grooming young players into highly prized assets. You may not agree but it makes sense to me. Football is a business like it or not but unfortunately a lot of fans only care about what they see on the pitch today. A little shortsighted if you ask me, which is why the likes of Moores and Parry are no longer at the club.

Roy had a vision? What was it? It being shit is a descriptor, not an explanation. I certainly didnt see what he was trying to do. I'm not 100% sure if KK's vision will materialize but I believe in it. I like the attacking football he's trying to bring back, the old pass & move. I like that he's giving the young lads a chance. To expect him to get it right the first time is unfair. Why? I've reiterated before that when you are told to buy young, you're always at risk not knowing if the players will mature fast enough? For that I can empathize with KK. For that I'll give him the time he needs. Not like he was told to spend whatever it takes on big stars who can deliver instantly because they are in their prime.
