Fabrice Muamba is 'fighting for his life'

Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba collapsed and stopped breathing during the FA Cup fifth-round tie against Tottenham.

Medics spent 10 minutes trying to resuscitate the 23-year-old on the field after he collapsed with no other players around him.

BBC Radio 5 live's Ian Dennis says the England Under-21 international is fighting for his life.

The score was 1-1 when the match was abandoned after 41 minutes.

Medical staff gave Muamba mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and tried to revive him with a defibrillator. In total six medics were treating the player.

Both sets of supporters chanted Muamba's name as he was taken off the pitch on a stretcher. ESPN reported that he was not breathing as he was taken down the tunnel.

Referee Webb called the visibly shaken players off the field after consulting with Coyle and Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp.

Minutes later the match was abandoned.

The former Arsenal midfielder was taken to hospital, accompanied by manager Owen Coyle and club captain Kevin Davies.

A Bolton spokesman said: "Fabrice Muamba has been taken to hospital following his collapse. There is no further information at this time."

Soon after the incident, messages of support flooded in for the former Birmingham man.

Spurs player Rafael van der Vaart was one of the players on the pitch when Muamba collapsed. He tweeted: "Terrible what happened with Muamba during the game. We're all praying for him."

England international Jack Wilshere, who played with Muamba at Bolton, tweeted: "Hope Muamba is okay. Thoughts with him."

Middlesbrough defender Justin Hoyte, who played in the Arsenal youth team with Muamba, said: "I seriously hope my best friend in football is OK. Stay strong bro [sic] please please stay strong. God is with you remember that."

Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor said: "At the moment we are all watching, waiting, hoping and praying. For all the football family it's a terrible thing to see.

"We just hope it's not going to be a situation like that of Marc-Vivian Foe.

"This can happen on a pitch and one of the reasons why we insist all youngsters coming into the game have the ability to have heart screenings to avoid this happening."

Muamba joined Wanderers from Birmingham in 2008 and has made 148 appearances for the club.

Glad he's alive.

Never nice to see such things happen and it puts alot of things into perspective. There are more important things than football.

Hope he gets well soon, makes a speedy recovery and will still be able to play in future.

Hats off to the medics on the pitch and hospital staff. Heroes on the night.

Muamba faces crucial 24 hours, says Coyle with Bolton star in critical condition in hospital

Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba faces a crucial 24 hours with the Bolton midfielder said to be critically ill in intensive care at the heart attack centre of the London Chest Hospital.

The 23-year-old collapsed in the 41st minute of the Trotters's FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham, with the match abandoned after the player received treatment on the pitch from paramedics.

Bolton boss Owen Coyle accompanied Muamba to the hospital and later emerged to give an update on the player's progress.

He told Sky News: 'Fabrice is critically ill. The next 24 hours are going to be absolutely crucial.'

He continued: 'We've obviously been inundated with people wishing him well and we hope that if everybody can pray strongly tonight that Fabrice is able to recover.

'It's very serious. There's not getting away from that. He's critically ill and God willing he makes it through.'

The club released a statement which read: 'Bolton Wanderers can confirm that Fabrice Muamba has been admitted to the heart attack centre at London Chest hospital where he is currently in a critically ill condition in intensive care.

'No further information will be issued at this stage. The club has requested the media to respect his family's privacy at this time.'

And fck me.

One Malaysian guy I know is saying they should have just sub him off and let play resume because they have to consider how far people have tavelled to watch the game, how much money is spent, how hard it is to find a parking space and that abandoning the game is bad economically and business-wise.

Some people need to learn that there are more important things than money, a parking spot and football.

Disrespectful.

Then he comes and say ... let's say England is winning 2-1 against Portugal in the World Cup final and there's one minute left..

Then a Portuguese player suffers a cardiac arrest, would the English fans be happy to abandon the game?

Man Arrested Over 'Racist' Muamba Tweets
QUOTE
A 21-year-old man has been arrested after racially offensive Twitter comments were made about footballer Fabrice Muamba, who collapsed after suffering a cardiac arrest during an FA Cup tie.

He is being held at Swansea Central police station, South Wales Police said.

The comments appeared on the Twitter account @liamstacey9, which has since been taken down.

While the feed was still visible comments claimed that his account had been hacked.

Other users of the micro-blogging service responded with outrage to the remarks.

Muamba, 23, was rushed to hospital after suffering what appears to have been a heart attack on the pitch before 36,000 horrified spectators last night.

He is currently in critical condition in hospital.

The footballer's illness has prompted a wave of support and prayers from both fans and others in the world of football.

A police spokesman said: "South Wales Police have arrested a 21-year-old male from the Pontypridd area in connection with racially offensive comments made on the social media site Twitter.

"The male is currently being held in custody at Swansea Central Police station. There is no further information at this time."

Both Swansea University and Treorchy RFC, where the suspect is believed to have played rugby, have made statements condemning the comments on his Twitter feed.

"We disassociate ourselves from any racist remarks," a Swansea University spokesman said.

"We are an equal opportunities university and will be looking into this matter. We will of course cooperate fully with any police investigation."

Treorchy RFC said it was "aware" of the comments made by the player.

"The club wishes to completely disassociate itself from these comments and will be carrying out a full investigation into this matter," it said in a statement.

"The club values its position and reputation within the local community and the wider rugby community and at all times encourages our members to treat others with dignity and respect."

2 hours?? I read sumwhere that if the brain is depraved of oxygen for more than 5 min then the person will get brain damage which most often or not leads to impaired mobility in the future.....does that mean that his career as a footballer is over?

Added on March 19, 2012, 7:38 amI remember going to private hospital last year, the medical staff put me in ECG test because i had complain about tight chest, i know it's not because of heart problem; i told the medical staff. They explained that it's normal procedure if the patient complain about tight chest, or other problem related to chest pain because the rising case of heart attack among youth / young man today and they don't know for sure what's the exact problem is unless the patient undergo the test.
Thinking back of that, it worth every pennies that i spent. I encourage many of you guys also do the same especially if you guys live the live of an athlete. Don't hesitate to spend little bit of your money for your health. Don’t take anything for granted, especially your health and your family.

Luis Suarez used Facebook to dedicate the goal that helped Liverpool reach Wembley for the second time this season to Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba.

The Uruguay international opened the scoring as the Reds beat Stoke City 2-1 to book a place in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley.

The victory came on a weekend when football was put into perspective by the collapse of Muamba during another FA Cup quarter-final played between Bolton and Tottenham.

It was later confirmed that the England U21 international had suffered a cardiac arrest, and he is now receiving treatment in intensive care.

Writing on his Facebook page after firing a superb goal at Anfield, Suarez said: "I want to dedicate to Muamba the goal and the FA Cup semi-finals qualification.

"Keep fighting buddy, don't give up! You will make it!!"

finally a better update.

A statement released by Barts, the London NHS Trust and Bolton Wanderers read: "Fabrice Muamba remains in intensive care at the London Chest Hospital, where today he is showing small signs of improvement.

"His heart is now beating without the help of medication and he is also moving his arms and his legs. However, his long-term prognosis will remain unclear for some time. He is still critically ill and will continue to be closely monitored and treated by staff in The London Chest Hospital's intensive care unit.''

Good thing that he's gone past the critical 24 hour period. Let's hope that he doesn't collapse again in the future. Any news about what kind of physical problems / conditions that he's suffering from?

Suddenly he reminds me of the other African player that suddenly died on pitch.

With every passing hour there is tentative hope although I have also read reports this evening stating that only a small percentage of individuals who require such resuscitation survive. I am fearful of the worst and fully expect to wake tomorrow to the news that Fabrice Muamba – an England Under-21 captain, father to a young boy, and someone widely said to be one of the nicest guys in football – has died.

Even this awful situation however is preferable to earlier when people were understandably under the assumption that he already had. 41 minutes into Bolton’s FA Cup tie with Spurs the midfielder collapsed to the turf and he stopped breathing. On several further occasions his heart failed and it is only due to the incredible work of the medical staff on hand that there is still a chance he may yet recover.

For such a terrible fate to befall a fit and healthy Premier League footballer during a match – and live on television no less – was obviously an extremely newsworthy circumstance. Those watching on ESPN looked on aghast, sharing the same sickening sense of helplessness that was evidently felt so acutely in the ground itself by both sets of supporters. Those without access to the channel hurriedly tuned into radio stations and clamoured onto social network sites and forums, to hear of developments and share their distress. As Rodney Marsh so succinctly put it on Twitter, the football family held its breath while up and down the country households discussed the horrifying events that were unfolding.
Many people prayed – religious or not – and there was a desperate collective will for the player to be okay. The reports however were not encouraging.

With the match rightfully abandoned and with no further visual aids the concerned public turned to other media sources to find out whatever we could, namely your own website, the BBC and Daily Mail websites, Sky Sports News and Radio 5.

The BBC updated its coverage minute-by-minute and did so in the sensitive and mature manner you would expect from them. They ran these updates beneath an archived photograph of the player.

The Mail’s piece contained pictures of the player receiving medical treatment – as did the Telegraph’s online news site – but crucially the stricken Muamba could not be seen through the huddle of doctors and medics. Additionally there were images of team-mates consoling each other and players praying on the pitch.

Covering such an awful occurrence – where a man’s life hangs in the balance – is, I should imagine, a delicate balancing act between providing a comprehensive account of what has happened and displaying suitable tact and discretion.

After all there will be many people who personally know the man. And with him being a famous footballer there will be many, many more who feel they know him. These individuals would be amongst the readers – his son perhaps, certainly his extended family and friends – desperately seeking out any news or statements, assurances or gut-wrenching confirmations from your sites.

Seeing their father, son, cousin, childhood friend, the player who once signed your shirt outside the Reebok Stadium, prone and possibly dead would be horrifying.

With this in mind I personally believe the BBC, the Mail and ESPN – who undoubtedly was under the most scrutiny of all – trod this delicate line of taste well all things considered.

I had no right to see that and you certainly had no right to publish it.
You however….and why is it always you?…..decided to dispense with basic human decency and go down the sensationalistic route. With Fabrice Muamba still en route to the hospital – and widely presumed deceased – you published a large clear photograph of the player prostrate on the floor. His eyes looked shocked and confused.

I had no right to see that and you certainly had no right to publish it.
So why did I click on the link after being told by a stranger online that you had indeed printed a photograph in the worst possible kind of distasteful intrusion?

Because despite knowing for 37 years what a vile amoral publication you are – capable of the grossest acts of bullying, cruelty, lies and bile – I still couldn’t quite believe that you had the sheer gall to do so again.
Because it is fair to say that you have form here.

Your rag of sauce and hatred is still not bought in the Merseyside area twenty-three years after you ran with one of the most infamous and disgraceful untruths in the history of the British media. Four days after 96 football supporters were crushed to death at Hillsborough, and with a nation still numbed by shock and grief, you decided to splash ‘The Truth’ across your front page above sick and falsified claims that were anything but. Alleging in that sensationalistic way of yours that pertains to fact that fans picked the pockets of the dead, beat up a police constable who was attempting to give the kiss of life, and urinated on ‘brave cops’ you then vehemently stood by these surreal and outrageous falsehoods for many years. This caused not only intense pain and hurt to the bereaved and a city in need of comfort but also significantly derailed a fight for justice that continues to this day.

It polluted minds and ruined lives, a signature move of yours that once again made a mockery of your self-built image of being the paper of the common man. It’s a dichotomy that never fails to amaze – that you place such stock in representing the very people you quite evidently view as worthless scum. Us. The British public.

In 2005 your managing director Graham Dudman described it as ‘the worst mistake in our history’. This followed a front page apology that could well have been mumbled from a petulant teen. With no genuine remorse you intimated that the protracted ill-feeling in the north-west was orchestrated by the Trinity Mirror owned local press and pointed out that your editor – Rebekah Wade – was a 20 year old student at the time of the tragedy. ‘Time to move on’ you said. And with that Wade did move on. To resigning in the wake of the hacking scandal that appalled the nation and wider world.

We’re starting to see a pattern here irrespective of who sits behind the big chief’s desk. Whether it’s the odious MacKenzie or the satanic Murdoch, the common denominator is always you, the ‘super soaraway’ Sun.

With your tits and lies and your cheeky facade hopelessly failing to mask a pious debasing rhetoric you have been a virulent disease in this country since 1963. In human form would any of your readers befriend you? Or would they see you for the spiteful, evil, rotten-to-the-core entity you truly are?

Was there any regret for your actions? Evidently not considering your decision today.

Your half-arsed and insulting apology for your Hillsborough fabrications came soon after you were the only newspaper to print a full and clear image of the stricken body of Marc-Vivien Foe as he lay dead on a pitch in Lyon, France. On international duty for Cameroon the 28 year old Manchester City midfielder suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and collapsed onto the turf.

City and West Ham fans – who thought the world of MVF – woke to see him deprived of dignity and splashed across your front page. His eyes looked shocked and confused.

Again you received widespread condemnation for doing this.
Was there any regret for your actions? Evidently not considering your decision today to once again prioritise numbers over decency by showing in graphic detail what might yet be the last moments of a young man’s life.

Being embroiled at the centre of the hacking scandal and the consequent Levison Enquiry it was hoped that you might change your ways. Hangdog contriteness by your owner and others in light of the shocking revelations suggested you might at least pretend to have a shred of value if only for a short while.

But we were idiots for even contemplating this weren’t we? Scum is scum and always will be. It is embedded in your DNA.

There is no doubt in my mind however that the tide is turning and though you might still reside folded on the dashboard of a considerable number of white vans the people of this country now demand and expect something that you are innately incapable of supplying in our media: decency. Just that. Basic human decency.

And should you ever fall – and please God make that day soon occur – and there is footage on the news of your HQ being emptied of boxes and staff I hope with every fibre of my being that I witness someone – whether it be a journalist or executive – walk down the steps into the evening light with a certain look on their face. For their eyes to look shocked and confused.

Yours Sincerely

Daisy Cutter

Grow up kid, we don't care how big your team are, or anything to do with your club and your player, at least in this thread. We can see all your comments are pretty biased and one sided. learn to understand and see things from another point of view.

ok stop that, it has got nothing to do with your club here in particular. Period!

but it's great that the football community shows support to Muamba.

Get well soon Muamba!

Chelsea made an official complaint that led to a Premier League and Football Association review, from which measures were introduced that included an ambulance being in place at stadia for the exclusive use of players, and club doctors attending every game.

thats was back then, it was a big contribution. nod.gif (not the injury but subsequent steps chelsea. fa, the league took). were only short of heli, a surgeon doc in football.(comparing to F1 where they have s group of them on site)

anyway positive news filtering trough on muamba.

Heart Checks

muamba case aside, it would be on the back foot if clubs havent implemented this since even before muamba collapsed there has been an increase in number of heart related incidents in football.

Fans praise ‘hero’ doctor who rushed on pitch to save Muamb

A London doctor was hailed a hero today for saving footballer Fabrice Muamba’s life.

Andrew Deaner, a consultant cardiologist, was a spectator at the match when the 23-year-old collapsed.

He immediately ran up the gangway to the pitch where he explained to the stewards that he was a heart specialist. Football fans today praised Dr Deaner and credited him with increasing Muamba’s chances of survival.

Hundreds of messages were posted on Twitter thanking the doctor for his “heroic efforts”. One read: “May God Reward You For Your Bravery.”

Another said: “This guy is my hero this week — Well done Dr Andrew Deaner — keep the big man Fabrice going!” Among tributes to the specialist was: “Spurs fan and heart specialist Dr Andrew Deaner should be highly commended for his actions to help @fmuamba, a true hero in my eyes.”

Another fan wrote: “Andrew Deaner, we will forever be in your gratitude. Well done for helping Muamba.”

Dr Deaner, who ran on from Tottenham’s East Stand during Saturday’s match, had stressed that Muamba must go straight to the London Chest Hospital in Bethnal Green, where he works. He accompanied the Bolton midfielder in the ambulance and is one of the team of specialists providing him with round-the-clock care.

The doctor, who is married with three teenage children, is also cardiology and clinical director of medicine at Barking, Redbridge and Havering University NHS Trust. Dr Graham Stuart, medical director of Sports Cardiology UK, said the quick work by Dr Deaner and the medical team at White Hart Lane had given Muamba the greatest possible chance of making a recovery.

“They were obviously very troubling scenes but the thing that was most vital was how quickly he received treatment,” Dr Stuart said. “At that stage the support is critical and the speed of treatment is vital. Any delay can damage various organs.

“The sooner they were able to get him breathing again then the better.”

Bolton chairman Phil Gartside said:  “The staff at the London Chest Hospital have been nothing short of exceptional and I would like to thank them all at this ongoing critical time. The support from Tottenham and our own fans was fantastic at the game, unbelievable.”

Credits to him and of course all the other paramedics as well. Good to see he is finally getting better. Get well soon, Fabrice.

Coyle has spoken with Muamba
Bolton boss expresses special appreciation to Tottenham
QUOTE
Bolton manager Owen Coyle has confirmed that he has had a brief conversation with Fabrice Muamba but stressed that it remains early days in the midfielder's recovery from a cardiac arrest.

Muamba has been in the intensive care unit of the London Chest Hospital since Saturday evening after collapsing on the pitch during Bolton's FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham.

He started to show signs of improvement on Monday and was later able to breathe independently and recognise family members, as well as respond to questions appropriately.

It has also been announced that the 23-year-old had a comfortable last night in hospital, although Coyle insisted there was still a long way to go in his recovery as he addressed the media on Tuesday afternoon.

Coyle again wanted to thank the hospital on behalf of Muamba's family and everyone who had offered support, whilst saying that he had spoken to the player.

"We had a conversation and a few words were exchanged, but that will remain private as you understand," said Coyle.

"It is a great sign but I must stress that this is still very early in the process. The doctors have stressed that point so that we all know what is involved.

"Fabrice has still got a long way to go but it is encouraging signs and whilst that is the case it is very positive and we move forward from that point."

Coyle also expressed special appreciation for the way everyone at Tottenham united with Bolton to fight for Muamba at White Hart Lane.

He explained: "I have to go on record as thanking everybody and I have to mention the supporters actually at the match from both Bolton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur. How Tottenham acted as a club was extraordinary to see, everybody working in those circumstances for the common aim of making Fabrice better.

"It is also truly remarkable the work being done by the hospital and the family have asked me to pass that on once again.

"For clarity, Fabrice has improved but it is still early days and he remains in intensive care and in critical condition."

Outstanding individual
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Although he was careful not to get carried away, Coyle admitted that he could not have imagined Muamba would make such good progress over the past 48 hours.

He said: "At this stage on Saturday I certainly would not have envisaged the improvement that has come, but I am getting repetitive and it is still early days.

"We said on Saturday night that we hoped and we prayed and the support he has had worldwide, the prayers from countries all over the world.... word spreads of how nice a lad he is and the qualities he has as a man.

"Football pales into insignificance but he is an outstanding young individual and we pray that he gets back to that level again."

Asked if the hospital knew whether Muamba might be able to make a full recovery, Coyle said: "They say that is something that has happened before.

"The two things that Fabrice has that can help him in this battle are that he is such a fit young man and, the life he has had, he has had to fight every step of the way in his young journey, so those two things I am sure will stand him in good stead."

Coyle added that he had given no thought to when Bolton might return to normal training ahead of a Premier League match against Blackburn on Saturday that is expected to go ahead, insisting that Muamba was his only concern.

When asked if he could now think of focusing on the weekend match at the Reebok Stadium, Coyle said: "The answer to that is no, because that's not something of great importance to me at this moment in time."

If he's gonna make it to recover, I wish he'll be out of footy, at least not as a player. Same wish goes to Abidal.

Muamba trauma revealed

Fabrice Muamba was 'effectively dead' for 78 minutes and needed 15 electric shocks to restart his heart, Bolton team doctor Jonathan Tobin has revealed.

The Bolton midfielder's progress has been extraordinary since he suffered a cardiac arrest at Tottenham on Saturday evening, with memories of the harrowing scenes at White Hart Lane still fresh.

Medical staff desperately tried to save Muamba's life on the pitch during the abandoned FA Cup quarter-final tie before he was rushed to the nearby London Chest Hospital, where the 23-year-old has remained.

Tobin has now given a startling insight into the events of Saturday night as he spoke for the first time about the efforts that were made to save the former England Under 21 international's life.

After working on Muamba for 48 minutes before his arrival in hospital, Dr Tobin confirmed the player continued to receive treatment for 30 minutes before his heart showed signs of activity.

"In effect, he was dead in that time," Dr Tobin said.

"Fabrice was in a type of cardiac arrest where the heart is showing lots of electrical activity but no muscular activity. It's something that often responds to drugs and shocks.

"Now, heaven knows why, but Fabrice had, in total, 15 shocks. He had a further 12 shocks in the ambulance."

Knowing Muamba so well, once he arrived at the hospital on Saturday, Tobin broke down as he feared the consequences of what had happened.

"I can't begin to explain the pressure that was there," Tobin added. "This isn't somebody that's gone down in the street or been brought into A&E.

"This is somebody that I know, I know his family. This is somebody I consider a friend. This is somebody I joke with on a daily basis.

"As I was running onto the pitch I was thinking 'Oh my God, it's Fabrice'."

While Muamba has exceeded the hopes and expectations of doctors so far he remains in the very early stages of his recovery, consultant cardiologist Dr Sam Mohiddin has warned.

Muamba's recovery has left the Trotters sufficiently uplifted to confirm Saturday's Premier League encounter with Blackburn at the Reebok Stadium will go ahead, as will the rescheduled FA Cup quarter-final with Spurs next Tuesday.

However, it may be some time before Muamba completes a return to full health.

"Fabrice has continued to demonstrate positive signs of recovery and he has not only exceeded our expectations but also our hopes in the way he's recovered," said Dr Mohiddin, who has been in charge of Muamba since his admission to the London Chest Hospital.

"But this remains very early in what could be a lengthy recovery period."

Fabrice Muamba Update

Posted on: Fri 23 Mar 2012

A Statement From Shauna Magunda And Marcel Muamba

We would like to firstly thank God for answering our prayers.

Thank-you to everyone for the love, prayers and support over the past few days. In particular we owe an enormous gratitude to the Bolton Wanderers and Spurs medical teams for their quick reaction on Saturday, and the fantastic medical team here at The London Chest Hospital.

We have been overwhelmed by all the kind messages we have received. The support we have had from the fans, not just from Bolton but football supporters around the world, has given us so much strength. We have been particularly touched by the support from the football community globally.

Thanks also to our family and close friends and thank-you to the media for respecting our privacy during this very difficult time.

Even though Fabrice has made great progress over the last couple of days, he is still in intensive care and still has a long period of recovery ahead. He has asked that you please keep him in your prayers.

Fabrice Muamba able to sit out of bed and eat in hospital

Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba has been able to sit out of bed in hospital, eat and watch his team-mates on Match of the Day.

"He continues to make encouraging progress in his recovery," said a joint hospital and club statement.

Manager Owen Coyle said Muamba watched highlights on Sunday morning of the 2-1 Premier League win over Blackburn.

"If there is a bit of humour that comes out of that, I am led to believe he fell asleep when it was 2-0," he said.

The Scot is treating Tuesday's rearranged FA Cup quarter-final tie as "a chance to thank the Tottenham Hotspur fans" for their support.

The game sees Bolton return to White Hart Lane for the first time since the midfielder's cardiac arrest shortly before half-time led to the match being abandoned.

"Last Saturday it was almost like a sixth sense had taken over," said Coyle.

"There was a real sense of unity. Is it going to be tough [to return]? Yes."

Several Bolton players plan to visit Muamba as he recovers in intensive care at the London Chest Hospital, while fans staged a tribute before Saturday's game.

A statement from the hospital and Bolton on Monday said: "Over the weekend, he has been able to sit out of bed for a short time, watch television and has begun to eat.

"However, he will need to continue to be closely monitored by the medical team at the London Chest Hospital for some time.

"His family requests that he receive no more visitors for the moment, outside of immediate family and members of Bolton Wanderers Football Club."

Football figures from around the world have offered their support as the 23-year-old continues to recuperate.

Barcelona and Real Madrid players have worn T-shirts expressing their best wishes, with the same gesture replicated by Premier League teams in action at the weekend.

Coyle said: "He [Muamba] was so taken in and thankful that he wanted to express that to everybody for the support that has been shown to him.

"I think as well in the last few days he's been able to take in more the goodwill that globally he's been getting from people.

"But it's so great to know that bit by bit he is getting better."

Spurs have revealed that the match shirts worn by both teams for the replay will be signed and auctioned,  with proceeds going to the London Chest Hospital, the London Ambulance Service, the British Heart Foundation, Pan Africa Heart Foundation and CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).

A student who mocked Fabrice Muamba on Twitter after he collapsed during a match has been jailed for inciting racial hatred.

Liam Stacey, 21, provoked revulsion with comments made while the Bolton star still lay on the pitch.

The 23-year-old midfielder was left fighting for his life after suffering a cardiac arrest during an FA Cup tie on March 17.

Horrified fans watched live on TV as he fell to the ground during the quarter-final clash at Tottenham.

Police were inundated with complaints as members of the public reported the student's comments.

Stacey, a Swansea University biology undergraduate, was quickly tracked down and arrested.

Last week he admitted inciting racial hatred when he appeared briefly at Swansea Magistrates' Court and today (Tuesday) he was jailed for 56 days at the same court.

The first of Stacey's messages began with 'LOL (laugh out loud). **** Muamba. He's dead!!!'

A number of people took him to task for his views and he responded with a further string of offensive comments aimed at other Twitter users.

Stacey was close to tears during his appearance before magistrates last week.

Muamba's recovery over the past 10 days has been described as 'miraculous'.

He remains in intensive care in hospital where his condition is described as serious but stable.

Stacey broke down as he was taken away in handcuffs to a holding cell beneath Swansea Magistrates' Court.

He was led past the public gallery, where he was briefly embraced by friends and his parents as he shook with emotion.

Moments earlier, District Judge John Charles told him: 'In my view there is no alternative to an immediate prison sentence.'

He said that when Muamba collapsed, 'it was not the football world who was praying for him... everybody was praying for his life'.

He added that abusive remarks made to Stacey 'via a social networking site were instigated as a result of vile and abhorrent comments made as a result of a young man who was fighting for his life'

Earlier, Stacey, dressed in a smart brown suit with matching tie, was seen to visibly tremble as the prosecutor argued that the case should be sent to Crown Court for sentencing.

Louise Barron gave a summary of the case against Stacey, which included reading out a series of racist comments he posted.

She said that, when arrested, Stacey made an immediate admission of his guilt and said he had been drunk at the time.

The court heard that, on the day in question, he had been out watching Wales's rugby grand slam victory.

He had drunk up to eight pints of beer and described his drunkenness as an eight on a scale of one to 10.

Ms Barron went on to argue that the case was so serious that the maximum penalty of six months in prison available in a Magistrates' Court was not enough.

'The Crown would argue that the matter should be committed to the Crown Court for sentence,' she said.

She added that the 'gratuitous, persistent abuse'and the "racist element" meant the case should be dealt with at a higher level.

Gareth Jones, defending, said Stacey 'is completely ashamed of his behaviour that evening'.

He said that reaction to his comments had been widespread, he was no longer welcome at the university campus and he 'feared reprisals'.

He insisted that Stacey, who has an otherwise clean character, is not a racist and has friends from other ethic backgrounds.

'On the night in question his comments were vile, he admits that,' he said.
He added that, although the comments portray him as a 'bigot', he was actually 'a kind and caring person', who felt 'genuine remorse'.

He asked the judge to leave Stacey, a third year biology student, at liberty to allow him to take final exams.

He said he was doing 'extremely well' on his course and had ambitions to become a forensic scientist.

He added that that was now very unlikely and he would already 'pay dearly for the rest of his life' for what he had done.

In jailing Stacey, the judge said he took into account his early plea and the fact that he had been 'in drink' at the time.

But the revulsion that his comments triggered was both widespread and deeply felt.

Other undergraduates at Swansea campaigned for him to be dismissed from the university completely.

He is still the subject of an internal investigation.

A spokesman said today: 'The student remains suspended from the university pending the conclusion of our disciplinary proceedings.'

Stacey's sentence prompted a heated debate on Twitter.

Among those applauding the judge's decision was Lord Sugar, who tweeted: 'good job, be warned idiots'.

Others claimed the decision was too harsh given the student's previously clean criminal record.

But Jim Brisbane, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS Cymru-Wales, said racist language was inappropriate in any setting and through any media.

He added: "We hope this case will serve as a warning to anyone who may think that comments made online are somehow beyond the law."

Justice served! But the penalty is a bit too light for things like this. Should have jail him for 6 months

Coyle - Muamba getting better

Owen Coyle says Fabrice Muamba has shown 'continued improvement' in his recovery from the cardiac arrest he suffered on 17th March.

Since collapsing during an FA Cup tie at Tottenham, the Bolton midfielder has been cared for in intensive care at the London Chest Hospital.

He has made promising progress during his time at the specialist medical institution, with his condition now considered to be serious rather than critical.

All of those connected with Bolton are delighted to see the 23-year-old starting out on the long road to recovery, with Coyle having been a regular visitor to Muamba's bed side.

"He continues to get better, but remaining in intensive care," the Scot told Sky Sports News HD when offering an update on Thursday morning.

"When we went the other day and managed to see him, we could see the continued improvement and that all bodes well.

"I also have to say thank you to the press, the media, for how they have conducted themselves and the way they have given Fabrice and his family that privacy that's been required.

"Again, now is the time when they need a little bit more time and space for Fabrice's continued recovery, for him and the family.

"The well wishes have been really supportive and helped him no end and I think he has taken great strength from that. That will help in his continued fight to recover."

Bolton have turned their attention back to football in the past week, taking in a Premier League fixture with Blackburn and their rearranged tie with Tottenham, but Coyle admits Muamba is never far from their thoughts.

"We have always had representation at the hospital and that will continue because it's important that we know he is getting better, which he is," he added.

"The doctor gets the daily updates in the morning. He's going in the right direction and, with everybody's thoughts and prayers, long may that continue."

Fabrice Muamba walking as cardiac arrest recovery continues

Fabrice Muamba has walked for the first time since suffering a cardiac arrest as his condition continues to improve.

"He's taking steps, talking and has that big smile we love to see. He is progressing the right way," said Owen Coyle, the player's manager at Bolton.

Former England Under-21 international Muamba was technically "dead" for 78 minutes after collapsing in Wanderers' FA Cup tie at Tottenham last month.

Muamba, who turns 24 on Friday, remains in intensive care at a London hospital.

"He has done some short periods of walking down the corridor he is in as part of the unit, staying in intensive care," added Coyle.

The midfielder collapsed on the White Hart Lane pitch during the quarter-final match on 17 March and was given 15 defibrillator shocks before he reached hospital.

Muamba, whose family posted the first public picture of him on Twitter from his hospital room last week, has received thousands of get-well messages from players, officials and supporters across the world.

Bolton chairman Phil Gartside and club doctor Jonathan Tobin have visited the player at the London Chest Hospital this week.

Coyle said: "A couple of players have been sending him messages and we are keeping in touch. It has been great to see that smile and he continues to get better.

"We have to stress that he still has a long way to go, but the improvement has been remarkable and long may that continue."

Fabrice Muamba will be fitted with a special heart device to help him in his bid to make a Bolton Wanderers comeback.

Midfielder Muamba is having a mini defibrillator inserted in a minor operation before leaving the London Chest hospital - and heading home with an eye on starting training.

Muamba's medical team are putting in the 'inobtrusive' gadget as a back-up in case he is hit by the same problem that cause his cardiac arrest at Tottenham last month.

The experts have assessed Muamba since the incident - when he was brought back to life after being clinically dead for 78 minutes - and are giving him the extra security in case the trouble happens again.

Muamba's general health is excellent, with the powerful state of his vital organs one of the reasons why he survived the life-threatening ordeal at White Hart Lane.

The minor surgery includes the device being fitted underneath the skin, usually on the side at the armpit. But it will not stop Muamba from playing again.

Muamba is expected to return to his home in the north west before the weekend - as Mirror Sport revealed - and Bolton have been told he can resume training soon after.

Morosini dies on pitch

Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini has died after collapsing on the pitch in Saturday's Serie B match at Pescara, with the match abandoned after 31 minutes.

Morosini, 25, was rushed to hospital after medical staff attended to him on the pitch for a suspected heart attack, but died on arrival. The game was then called off with the other players leaving the field in tears.

"He suffered a cardiac arrest. Unfortunately he was already dead when the ambulance arrived. He never regained consciousness," announced Doctor De Blasi.

Italian media reports claimed that a police car had blocked the ambulance's way into the stadium.

"I don't know if the ambulance was late, but I know that the entrance onto the pitch was blocked by a vehicle,'' Iannascoli added. "Morosini collapsed, he tried to get back up but then collapsed again.''

The former Italy Under-21 international was on loan at Livorno from Serie A side Udinese.

Muamba discharged from hospital

QUOTE
Bolton's Fabrice Muamba has been discharged from the London Chest Hospital less than a month after collapsing on the pitch during a match.

The midfielder, who was kept alive artificially for 78 minutes following a cardiac arrest during the FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham at White Hart Lane on March 17, has since made an astonishing recovery.

In a joint statement with the Barts Health NHS Trust, Muamba said: "I am naturally very pleased to be discharged from hospital and would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to every single member of staff at The London Chest Hospital who have played a part in my care.

"Their dedication, professionalism and expertise is simply amazing and I will forever be in their debt. I also wish to say thank you to all the many well-wishers who have sent thousands of messages of support.

"Now I am out of hospital, I am looking forward to continuing my recovery and spending precious time with my family."
