sifu rorytate - oh..i was referring to the seven rods that John tested...on the other hand..u r right..the article that u posted in mfn does apply for both casting and spinning anglers..

plkvoon - maybe ur reel is using dry drag system and in your case, some of the engine oil accidentally sip into the drag system... hmm.gif

as for me..after each outing..I'll tighten up the drag and give it a rinse using tap water..shake it a few times vigorously and let it dry up over night then put 1 drop of reel oils for the bearings on each side..also a bit of teflon grease on worm shaft gear ..consider it a minor service.. laugh.gif

@nicotine - totally agreed..the drag should be loosen at all time..except during rinsing and outing of course..hehe..

speaking of drags..waiting for my friend to bring back a set of carbontex drag for my reel..hopefully he will be back in malaysia at the same time my zpi bearings arrive at my doorstep ..then it will be double tightlines with 1 lure..hehehhe rclxm9.gif

thanks for your inputs..both sifu rorytate and sifu nicotine..

The targeting fishie is toman, toman bunga and haruan..but still depending on luck...kiaakkssss. Locations still unknown yet as i've not been there before..but according to the regulars, anything below 40lbs wouldn't stand a chance to land those big mommas because of few factors:- strength of those mommas hmm.gif , snags on underwater structure such as branches, big chuck of woods, downed trees and etc rclxub.gif

hhmm, so for the lines I think i'll give berkley whiplash and stren a try. nod.gif

as for the rod, i think i'll go for some shop window shopping on this weekend...hehe...need to test and feel the rod personally laugh.gif

I spoke to some custmers at RHA and they mentioned that those big toman mommas, you'd need to land them in about 5 minutes or less, cos after that, they will start to hide in thick roots at the bottom and chances of getting your lure back would be close to zero...
*
well said sifu tinkerfly. rclxms.gif ..thats the reason why i need a heavy setup in the 1st place. laugh.gif , to stop those hot mommas from running back to their playground and hop onto a merry-do-round with my lure in their mouth rclxub.gif coz i ain't want any of my trairao or smith froggie sitting on the merry-go-round. shocking.gif shakehead.gif

Regarding on rods, get the abu conolon to stop the run, that would be good enough. PE1~3 which at the same time you can do jigging with it smile.gif

location still unknown yet sifu rorytate..sorry..but i'll be going next week and i'll try to snap some photo if i ever land some mommas.. blush.gif ..btw..did look for the abu conolon rod u recommended..really a good rod i must say..to bad they only have spinning version only..i'll be heading to other tackle shop this weekend to try my luck for casting and longer version.. hmm.gif worst to worst just get a shakespeare/rapala 30-40lbs..hehhe..dirty cheap only..

QUOTE(tinkerfy @ Jan 23 2007, 09:12 AM)
sifu? hahaha maybe in 5 years lar...
i've only started fishing for a month..
now still in deep poison stage...  sweat.gif
i'm planning to get a Daiwa Alphas and a medium fast action rod for my baitcasting outfit...
what lures should I get? any brands in particular?
wanna aim for haruan/toman/Peacock bass...
saw the prices at RHA kinda steep, compared to Tightlines..  unsure.gif
*
ah, sifu tinkerfly eyeing on daiwa alphas eh, brows.gif its a good choice there, do try to opt for the ALPHAS 103/103L(not type F) for its CRBB feature or maybe u might wanna take a look at abu garcia revo casting reel too for their powerful drag system. RHA or Tightlines..no comment here.. smile.gif ..but i can advise u 1 thing, if you have time, pay a visit to both shop and ask their staff's assistance for both reels, throw them any questions that u can think of..e.g. performance, reel characteristic, after sales service, warranty and etc..justify yourself which shop have a more friendlier staffs and after sales service..after all u need some after sales service for that reel rite? btw..throw ur lure questions to them too..i'm sure they have some lure to meet ur requirement.. laugh.gif

personally i won't mind paying 10 - 20 bucks extra but in return getting friendly staff and friendly after sales service .nope guys..its not a hint in anyhow way..hehe..hope i'm standing in a neutral ground.. whistling.gif tongue.gif

The conolon is good, esp when it's very light. Very good for jigging. They have both spinning and casting ma. Check out unker Bob's place. Else i have a spare conolon pe1~3 that i could sell to you smile.gif

tinkerfy - aiks..unlucky day huh sad.gif , well sounds like you need to get a fresh pack of swivels and snaps laugh.gif

sifu rorytate - thanks for the offer, quite a good rod and reasonable offer i must say, 1 feature i like most is the detachable end section thumbup.gif but after much thinking, sad to say i have to give it a pass..not because of the price but because of the length. sad.gif ..the problem is this, currently i already have a 6" rod to match the scorpion mg for my light setup, so i was opting for a longer rod to match the zillion for my heavy setup..headache headache rclxub.gif btw hows ya trip. Fruitful?? laugh.gif

Bro Ser,

Not to promote the conolon, and i agree to you on the rod ability smile.gif

if for mid/heavy action for toman or light jigging, you can always opt for conolon. The tip is very flex and it's a good rod for casting, even light lures like 7grams smile.gif

With a reel like Zillion, you dont need a long rod to cast furthur smile.gif

I have casted my Procaster Z(14lb stren) + conolon pe1~3 + super light lure(3.5grams) and it flies a distance.. smile.gif I would say that it's more to the method and your skills to cast light lures with a mid action rod smile.gif
*
yesh yesh ..totally agreed here. decision made based on i've already have a 6" rod and i don't want to have another rod with the same length biggrin.gif
