KIES update does not wipe. Odin update depends on the rom. Normally those from samfirmware are wipe rom while those from intratech are non-wipe. It general it depend on the rom not KIES or ODIN. These are just flashing program.

We don't store in simcard, usually we store it in google mail contacts.

So if we update on computer it'll sync to phone.

If you want to transfer to gmail, its easy.

Export your simcard contacts to .vcf, then transfer the .vcf file to computer and upload to google mail contacts.

There you can see it and do any amendments if you want.

Then after that sync your phone and your gmail contacts will enter your phone.

You can then 'hide' the simcard contacts.
