MT got Gen 1, 2 & 3. Improvement to the surface areas come with a price. I saw ppl buying truck load of MT for their koi ponds. Must have cost a fortune !
I'm using Taiwan GAE bio ball. Plenty of bootleg version out there.
Any good recommendation for mechanical filter on compartment 1 ?
*
Yes the improvements do come with a price tag. Apparently MT has a green mechanical filter media..check it out at Cheah Aquarium. Try sourcing for MT online for savings if u are inclined to go that route.

All good filters are pricy even if u go the canister route. For me at least the good canister filters have pollutant indicator, auto back flush and I don’t have to open the canisters but we are dealing with pond filter category. Another advantage is built in UV so everything in one.

Hi guys, need advice as i will be upgrading my 4ft tank to 6ft. currently im using the canister filter, and my new tank will be using sump. i have ordered some biomedia like seachem matrix and i still have some leftover biorings (bout 2L) , so my question is can i just put them in a big mesh bag and soak inside my 4ft aquarium to build good bacteria in it while waiting for my new aquarium to reach? I currently have a pig nose turtle and 1 small arowana.

Yes absolutely. U can also use whatever media u have in the canister as seed when the sump filter becomes operational.

Remember the small Aro will need time to adjust to the new tank and to be safe, monitor the new tank’s water chemistry for a period of time.

Hi Sifus,

just want to get your opinion. i bough a 6inch Aro on March. i kept it in small aquarium. on May i bought a 3x1.5x1.5 aquarium and transferred the Aro. it was floating tail up for a day and then became normal. end of may i bought Dophin cf1400 and water quality became clear. i then start to change water about 30% every week and i will put some salt and 15ml of nutrafin and all went well. on 13th Jun i changed water same way then after a few days i saw there was brownish color alge like growth in the aquarium. i checked local shop they said its normal and asked to wash the tank and put some pleco. so last Saturday i bought 2 small pleco, 1 baby oscar + 1 red tail . i first used sponge to wipe the brown alge and stopped my filter and air buble. water was already brownish and i let it settle down for half hour. then i pumped out about 40% of water and fill up new water from tap. then i poured nutrafin 20ml and didn't put salt . then i released all then new fish also inside with the water. after few hour saw my ARO slow swim on top only with his mouth open and close. i suspected something wrong. Sunday morning i went to fish shop n they told me it could be because of chlorine  so asked me to change half water and put in anticlorin and salt. i removed the water add salt + nutrafin 20ml and add water. ARO was still like that. evening about 5 pm on same day say aro already upside down stuck on my filter but still breathing. when i try to remove it it vomited blackish substance similar to alge. i moved it to small aquarium where i used to keep small karp for feeding. then after half hour later it died. but other fish in my tank all ok.

this is when its ok.

my wife is very sad as this is our first ARO. so she now ask to buy new 1 since the tank looked empty. im trying to find what went wrong so same thing dont repeat. please advise. already plan to buy 7x2x2 tank next week for the ARO sad.gif

sad to hear this.. hmm.. if possible try use a good water filter that can remove chlorine in first place.. or 99.99%.. then use any anti chlorine medicine to remove chlorine or chloramine after water change.

I'd be wary of the pig nose turtle, make sure it's not around the same size or bigger than the arowana.

White tank all the way till it reach 15 inch or more. I personally dont favor those heavy base color aro, they look 'dirty' to me. Lol.
First time raising a golden though, no idea it will show pearlies or not, this piece gonna be my experiment & study purpose. tongue.gif

I see, then you probably need tanning lights to go with it. And try pumping more food. It seems that way the gold rim will thicken faster.

Dear all,

I got my first blue based arowana at Saturday night. In early morning of Sunday like 7am ish I suddenly woke up and had this feeling that something was not right with my aro. I went to living room to check out the aro and found out it was not in the tank! I searched around and found it was on my living room carpet, it jumped from from almost 2 meter height. I knew aro arowana is jumper, but i never expect it can jump out so precisely from a small hole from the aquarium cover which allow me to just drop the food into the aquarium. Luckily it survived!

So now the problem.. the fins were damaged from the accident, and I can see the fins are healing fine, except the anal fin. The anal fin broke a little, will the broken anal fin regrow and will the broken area reconnect back by itself? I searched online, people is suggesting to do cosmetic surgery to cut off the broken fin......i don't want the fish to go through the surgery stress if the broken will recover by itself...any recommended contact for the surgery? This will be my last choice if it will not grow back. Picture of the broken fin attached below, hope you guys can see:

Next, I noticed there is one white/cloudy spot on its left eyes. I suspect the eye was scratched or had layed on carpet for long period that cause the damage. Will the eye recover as well? Picture attached below also. You can see there is small white/cloudy patch on the eye:

I have added salt to the aquarium to help with the recovery. Now the aro is swimming actively and no other things seem wrong..

UPDATE: The cloudy patch on the left eye is gone, now the eye is crystal clear rclxm9.gif The recovery speed is really fast rclxms.gif Now only left the anal fin....... Hope it will reconnect back of re-grow...

From experience there will need to be some form of human intervention to make the anal fin right again.
How much salt did u add? Maintain clean water, stop feeding and doze appropriate amount of salt will help heal the eye without much drama.

I followed the instruction on the salt package which is 6 teaspoon for every 6 gallon of water. My aquarium rank + sump filter have approximately 220 gallon water, so i added 37 teaspoon of salt.

Do you know anyone who can help to cut anal fin? I will cut it only after monitoring few weeks and it never grow back..

Ok since the salt is only effective if its the correct doze.

I do my own operations when necessary so unfortunately cannot recommend anyone. U can try asking some of the Aro specialist in town. Anal fins can be a little difficult to tackle but given time there is a 50/50 chance of healing properly.

I think the salt is working as the eye is recovered. Well, as for the anal fin...i will monitor see how it goes..

Normally recovery for eye issues on Aros are quite simple to cure unless discovered too late. Water change every 2 days and redosing with salt will greatly help and non feeding. Yeah the anal fin issue ultimately if it doesn't heal properly u will have to decide if it's worth the trouble.

Very informative video Harvin. Great job. Keep it up ! Just wondering does the overflow pipe have very loud noise ? I found few solution on Youtube but my LFS doesn't recommend it bcoz they said it will easily get clogged. They also recommend another design of sump tank as shown on the attached photo. Anyone know what's the different compare to sump tank with narrow partition?

Yes its very loud, what you mean it will get clogged - there are 3 style

1. Durso style(singlestandpipe high chances to get clogged)-very common method used by most drilled tank
2. Herbie (lower chance as there is an emergency overflow
3. Bean animal ( even lower because it has 2 emergency pipe)

I suggest to use at least No 2. so you can control the noise and water splash noise in the overflow compartment. With emergency pipe as well you are covered in case of anything.

Really depending on what time on media your going to use---- if the compartment are narrow then you might not able to arrange bigger media properly like mountain tree and all.

Usually Sump tanks have these configuration :

1st mechanical
2nd bio media
3rd bio media
4th heaters /Uv light(must be covered) and other items.
5th Pump.

Here is my newly setup 8x2.5x2.5ft - with 6 ft sump tank - roughly around 400 gallons.

any questions let me know.
