Is it difficult to join oil and gas industry with background from manufacturing?
So far, I had sent more than 100++ cv but get nothing.

hey sis, i think it would be wise that you state the final salary that you wanted,
from there you divide.
but i think offshore should have a higher rate

You can try oil and gas companies which have manufacturing plants here in Malaysia. e.g: FMC Technologies in Gelang Patah or SLB in Penang

I graduated as a Chemist. Seems very difficult to find a Chemist job in the O&G sector. anyone can comment on how to improve my hits with O&G company? tq. they seem to prefer to hire Chem Eng / Engineering based students.

For fresh grads to be seconded, reasonable rates are as the following:

1. KL Office : RM 450/day (10 hrs) - RM45/hour

2. Onshore Site : RM 450/day (10 hrs) - RM45/hour

3. Offshore Site : RM 900/day (12 hrs) - RM75/hour

Rate depends on SOW and other allocations/allowances. For offshore, often you are entitled to hardship allowance.

In KL, engineers with 2-3 years experience that are being supplied to Consultant charge is around RM60/hour, some RM120/hour.

What I wrote the above is the rate charged to a company, not being paid to the engineers. As what have been mentioned, the dude is being offered to be seconded to EMEPMI via another company.

Can always adjust the rate to meet requirements.

Don't get confused with allowance by our own company. Our allowance always low. Hahaha. My offshore rate is around RM800-RM1200 per day if I do freelance job. If under company, RM200 only. Adoi! Haha.

Once in a blue moon, I get a call to carry out offshore job - either via another company or directly from Client. I will take unpaid leave and take the job as individual not as a company rep. My current company has no issue about this. Usually the job will only take 3-5 days. That's the justification of my rate. Hope that explains. smile.gif

Hi everyone,

Interesting posts here....(although I didn't read all the pages so forgive me if this has been asked).....

Does the oil and gas industry hire PhD holders? I've been offered a scholarship to do my PhD in Finland (on renewable energy)...and should I accept the offer, I will be 32 by the time I graduate (if I do graduate). Not so young, I know. I just wanted to know if it is a realistic goal to want to work for Shell Malaysia after my PhD. I've been to the Shell website and it seems they do hire PhD holders...but I thought it'd good to hear from people in the industry in terms of how common it is.

In terms of experience, I admittedly don't have much....about 2 years working as a Process Engineer for SBM Malaysia. Then I left to do my Masters in Japan. I just got back.

My initial plan was to accept the scholarship offer and try to see the job market in Finland but since coming back to Malaysia, my father is experiencing some health problems...so I'm rearranging priorities. I'm thinking I either forgo the scholarship and apply straightaway to oil and gas companies or since I already have the scholarship, take it, hopefully get my PhD and then come back and apply to oil and gas companies.

Would really appreciate any feedback or comments from the people here. Thank you!

I guess your main disadvantages would be lack of experience. Our company also got 2 phd. Both of them got phd while working, and one of them is quite young, around 27. And since we are consultant company, your qualification doesnt mean alot. Experience that count.
But there are other companies that take phd as researcher.

Hey guys, my new employer asked me to do medical checkup, BOSET and Seaman's Book on my own and they will reimburse them later. I already signed their offer letter but it's only official after I've done all those required test/course.

Is this a normal procedure? I'm just worried if I fail to pass any of those test/course after I tender my resignation from my current employer..shouldn't be a problem right?

To mhyug, thanks a lot for the vote of confidence but I also have the feeling that ICDeadPeople is right. These days younger and younger people are getting PhDs and having the experience to boot. Life's tough eh? The only hope I have is that the scholarship program does have an internship/job placement component to it (although it I think it will focus more on research) so I'm hoping that will contribute to my miniscule experience. Also apparently, in Europe, they consider PhD students as workers but if I'm coming back to Malaysia (which isn't quite in the Eurozone) it probably won;t matter.

At any rate, thanks for the feedback, everyone! To positive energy, thank you for the suggestion. I'm interested in renewable energy so will be asking Google sensei to help me. smile.gif

Also to ICDeadPeople, would it be okay to delve in more detail which companies hire PhD holders as researchers? I know from websites that places like Shell and Exxon do hire PhD people, but I don't know how far this is true in Malaysia, especially for experience-poor people like me. Or do you mean consultant companies like the one you work for? Back when I was working in SBM, there weren;t really any PhD holders but different types of companies work differently I guess.

Once again, thanks a lot for all the comments! Please do keep it coming! I appreciate it!

I just received this email from careers@shell.com and it quotes:

QUOTE
Regarding your recent application with Shell, we are pleased to inform you that we would like to invite you to attend an interview. A Shell representative will be contacting you in the near future to make arrangements.

Not sure myself if this email is really from Shell or some stupid scam mail? Anyone to point out for me please?
