IMHO, doing engineering and working at field are two different ball games but I don't see anything wrong with it as long as you can prove you have the hands-on capabilities. But again, your resume will only show your engineering experience.
Doing engineering is not a bad thing, quite rewarding in few years time. Field work is not for everybody - physically & mentally.
