i thought the purpose of those bio rings are for breeding those 2 good bacta hehe..since they help to nullifying those bad stuffs. The first kind of bacta breaks ammonia down into nitrites, and the second kind breaks the nitrites down into nitrates.
*
yea thats right but since i fill the space in my HOB with bio rings theres no more room for sponge. now theres bacteria in my hob doing their stuff of decomposing etc but no sponge to filter the dirts. lol. maybe 2moro i will make some modifications...

IMHO, if you think your bio filtration system is suffice, then you dont need to add xtra more biorings/ceramic rings. you can even reduce it since bacta wont even overpopulate even if you give a lot of area for it to breed. if im not mistaken, they are not only thriving in your filter only, but your substrate and even your tank glass itself  brows.gif

just went to clean my HOB filter. found a guppy fish bone inside hahaha. been quite a while since i cleaned my HOB. normally only do water change only dats y din realize. now left bone only and how the heck it got there i really dont know lol

In filter you can find of sort things, both of you found dead body but i found a living little colony of RCS in my eheim canister,
some have grow to 1cm length, all of them are colorless cos they have been living in the dark for weeks. Unfortunately half of them been
flush out in the toilet bowl as i didn't notice them early.

please advise

hurm, IMHO, i think you should cover your tank with a cardboard or sumthing to minimize the amount of moisture loss due to evaporation in the soil itself.
*
cardboard kenot la, box will suck the moisture dry, use plastic wrap better i think...

advice to you, dont rush your aquascape. do your homework and research about it 1st. better use 6 month to research and do your homework 1st than starting straight away and then regretting for the next 6 months... anything dunno can ask ppl here. alot of friendly people here willing to teach. nod.gif

perhaps you should find the "tree" first and measure it. then choose what carpet you want to plant. if small "tree" can use glosso, if large one, can use HG. I made a mistake by planting JHG in small aquarium..should plan glosso..haiszz...

this is 1.5ft tank..to small to make that scape..will transfer the tree to another tank...office tank..hehe

I love the idea of planted aquarium because the aquarium looks so alive with plants. If I were to start a simple tank with only a singular plant and fishes, what are the basic requirements?

- Aquarium
- Filter
- Lighting

I think the top 3 is the most important. Followed by

- Sand
- Plant
- Fish

This is what my knowledge can produce, please let me know what are the knowledge that I'm lacking. Do you think page 1 guide is sufficient?  icon_question.gif

Another question, filters changes the flow of the water current in the tank, I am always unsure how much pressure should the filter be producing. If I put let it suck up water at a high speed rate, the water flows down like waterfall, my fishes begin to swim around faster.
*
believe it or not, fish is the least important thing in a planted tank. judging from ur answer above, i think u still have lots of homework to do.

aquarium - self explanatory...
filter - it will be better if you have a cannister as it provides spacce for good bacteria to grow...
lighting - not the normal cheap lighting u can just buy at any local fish shop. must be high voltage so that the light can reach until the bottom of the tank. also depends how deep is ur water in the tank.
sand - not just any sand, most of us here use ADA soil for the tanks but heard others using JBL as well.
plants - try to do some research and start with low maintenance plants.
5 elements - Penac P, Penac W, Clear Super, Tourmaline, Bacter 100 ( this helps grows bacteria to grow in ur tank and decompose harmful material such as ammonia and nitrite to harmless materials. they also helps the growth of plants and provide supplememnts for the plants...
Co2( very important) plants will need co2/carbon dioxide and light for the photosystesis process.
diffuser - to diffuse ur co2 bubbles so that the co2 will melt in ur water rather than floating to the top and wasted.

also, search up the meaning and ways of cycling a tank.

hope i din miss out any important things here...
ps: anything u dunno, try google search or youtube it. thats how i learn most of the time...
pss: 6 months of planning is better than 6 months of headache and regretting... do sufficient homework before you start anything...

Added on April 25, 2012, 10:23 pmby the way, can i ask the sifus here, whats the different between ADA amazonia and ADA malaya soils? and if im right theres also ADA africana? Whats the main difference? or are them just for different looks for your tank? i dont think so personally...

Now I know the meaning of 'low-tech'  rclxms.gif My current tank has a rm1.50 plant, cheap and growing... but it's not what I want. Besides, I also worry of overgrown plants like the one I'm having, if it overpopulates the tank, how do you trim it  icon_question.gif
Hello kimimaro_kun!

You mean we can actually calculate how much watt is needed for a tank of specified length*width?

I know that co2 is important for photosynthesis, but no idea that additional co2 is required other than what the aquarium already has. Is it necessary to count the bubbles per second?

I will look at ZeneticX's tank as advised smile.gif
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filter_(aquarium)  rclxub.gif How much will it cost for a 2ft tank and it looks very hard to setup.

Lighting wise, don't we need to see the watts that suit the tank?

Wao, thanks for all the information. Though it is quite hard to absorb all at once, I will read and get to know more. I plan to start planting small. Is that possible? Just to build a simple 1ft tank and learn to take care of the plants.
*
ure most welcome. most of the things i noe come from all the sifus here also. just dont hesitate to ask.
heres how to calculate ur tank volume => Tank Volume Calculator
and how much watt u need for the lights in ur tank. => lighting
as for the plants, u will constantly need some liquid fertilizers added into the water after some time where the plants had already sucked dry most of the nutrients in the soil. theres a lot of brands and types out there but it is up to you to decide which 1 suites ur plants needs best... thumbup.gif
as for the trimming, there are special scissors out there and it depends on the grade. some good surgical grades ones actually cut the plant itself while other cheap scissors just bent and break the leaf which is bad for the plant.
as for co2, yes u will need extra outsource co2. those in the tank itself will not be sufficient. and it is necessary to count how many bubbles of co2 per second so that you dont release your co2 too much which will kill off fishes and shrimps or too little where it is not enough for the plant to do photosyntesis process...

I want to ask, if your planted tank is setup nicely already, and you want to relocate the tank, what are the considerations?
*
suck out most of the water and put inside some container/oail and ur fishes in the same water/community tank if u have 1, then it would be much lighter to move i guess?

but surely uve seen those japanese A gred marimos, their strands are really long and rough like hair algae and most of of my marimo are split open hehe  tongue.gif for carpet purposes.

btw, just finished relocating and rescaping my cikai 2ft bracer tank into a so called predator planted tank? but its seems empty due to lack of community fishes(i got feeder guppy fish as my schooling fish) and very very little of plants which makes the middle part very empty and bare + boring  doh.gif
too tired to rescape back lol..4 hours of sweat wasted i guess  yawn.gif

didnt know guppies school... lol!

they are like mesmerized/hypnotized by the light... lol  rclxub.gif

btw, relocating those fished and tank really buang my lemak hahah, damn heavy and time consuming if ure doing it alone.
from downstairs bringing up everything inside my room lol.
