Last time i was using PageMaker but now most printers are switching to AI. Even people in directories, newspapers uses AI. Just remember to save your ai in AI9 or AI 10 as most printers are still using that.

AI9 is not recommended as this Ai version is not stable. Highly recommended AI8 and AI10 although AI10 runs a bit slow bcause of its huge amount of plugins and other components
It is recommended to use QuarkXpress or Pagemaker for layout or brochure artworks.
Too much text or images in Illustrator will make the program slow-down. Its saved file is huge,
Updated images will move, measurements are not 100% accurate and mostly of all color separators hate designers who do their work in Illustrator because it takes hell a lot of time to output the films
