Guys, I need some info on RasPi case. Is there any body can build me a case for my RasPi. It is very expensive to get from oversea plus delivery cost.

Or, anybody who have Maker 3D printer, can help me up.
*
Or maybe you can try this? DiY other Lego or other material. Who bring this sexy Pi in Malaysia?

U need to know how to configure that, and it comes with no casing, I think that is a big issue for most common users.

Added on June 18, 2012, 10:20 pmAnybody plans to make casing for this Pi? I mean seriously Metal or plastic casing for sell along with Pi.
*
Is it that hard to configure? For the casing, lego will be good for me. Can DIY, use my old laptop fan.

Same here, my 1st pc was a 286, with windows 3.11, ms dos 3.3 or 5, still remember the funny sound reading a 1.2MB diskette or the tone modem card used to connect to Internet. Those days won't come again.

I'm new to Linux too, forced to learn as company want me involve in a project, within few months I think either I failed big time or pro d =p
*
Linux is not that hard and it's fun. However, i'm a gamer and most of the time will boot to Windows. And one thing that disappointing me about Linux is, IDM incompatible. I live with Ubuntu since 2008. At 2011, totally not using Linux. However, for HTPC Linux already more than enough. But for RaspPi, I might migrate to LXDE for go for Gnome with less eye candies.

Hey, I'm thinking of building myself media player with this thing. Is it possible? And how much is this thing cost? How about audio driver and codec? And what OS supported? Thanks...

Are you familiar with XBMC? It runs on raspberry pi. So you can play media off your NAS, samba,...even from harddisk connected via usb2, usb hub.

If you have a lcd tv, hdmi cable connection will also enable CEC. Basically, you can use say ur Sony tv's remote and interact with ur raspberry pi. Selecting media to play, pause, next chapter, ...
TV supporting even AAC, 7.1sound or some dolby digital smorgasmic  also can grab the output. If your tv/audio system dont support decoding some of the tougher audio file, then the load on raspberry pi will be higher.
Most likely if you want to play 1080p + 7.1ch AAC,DD surround sound, 200hz + subtitles+++ then you will have to overclock to get reasonable performance.
(if you dont mind little bits of problem, and it does take time for the developers to iron things out.)
*
Yup, I know XBMC but it's not my favorite as I prefer Smooth Video Project to play video at my PC. I'd say it's damn smooth. I did some googling just now and all my question answered. LoL...

Well, still thinking of geting R-Pi or just buy a media player with Android OS. Do you mean use Sony remote and interact with R-Pi? How is it? Shouldn't I control R-Pi and play the video on TV? blink.gif R-Pi is a mini pc right? So, need keyboard and mouse?

the tv works as the pi's video out source, connected by the hdmi cable. The hdmi cable, also works as the input* device from the TV.

cec enabled TV has their own remote, which can relay the signals of the tv's remote to the raspberry pi via the same hdmi connection.

google CEC if you want more details.

Never heard of Smooth Video Project.

What ever you try, Raspberry pi is only a 111rm proposition.

+ sd card and power adapter, or wifi adapter if you dont have ethernet line to the tv area.
*
This:
http://www.svp-team.com/
It really smooth the video playback...

How to know if it's CEC enabled TV? So, that CEC enabled TV remote can be use to remote R-Pi? Am I correct?

And I think RM111+SD card+power adapter+wifi adapter will cost more than a media player but I'm sure R-Pi is a fun thing to mess with.

And ethernet line to the TV area? What is that for... Sorry asking too much. You have R-Pi yourself?

Is it this thing? Well, I do aim to buy myself a Panasonic Viera.

Trade names for CEC are Anynet+ (Samsung); Aquos Link (Sharp); BRAVIA Link and BRAVIA Sync (Sony); HDMI-CEC (Hitachi); E-link (AOC); Kuro Link (Pioneer); CE-Link and Regza Link (Toshiba); RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) (Onkyo); RuncoLink (Runco International); SimpLink (LG); HDAVI Control, EZ-Sync, VIERA Link (Panasonic); EasyLink (Philips); and NetCommand for HDMI (Mitsubishi).[112][113][114][115][116]

Go to wikipedia search for cec. Got a bunch of cec supporting companies. Including Sony...I know cause I have a Sony lcd tv that I am still using to remote control R-pi... as a media player and torrent download server

For sure it will cost more, if you want to do extra stuff. If you just need a tiny 8gb sd card.. then its cheap. If you splurge for 64gb card... if you use the built in ethernet port, and dont use wifi plugged into usb port... that is less money. I use the ethernet port, as I diy pulled a bunch of ethernet cables in the house to the modem/router.

Well, if you want to serve/stream media from a nas, or pc storing your media collection, you will either need a ethernet line or a wifi. I connect pi to tv, pi to my home network. Some media is located on Pi if it is still serving torrent seeds. But after that I move it to my PC and serve it to the pi via samba shares.
*basically the Pi makes a dumb tv into a smarter tv.
And if you like, you can do other stuff with the Pi.
*
My home doesn't have internet connection. But I think can connect R-Pi to my PC via LAN cable right? Or buy a cheap USB wifi and attach to R-Pi to connect to my PC and laptop. All my video stored at PC. However, not all USB wireless are Linux support. sad.gif Or is it better to buy another external HDD, and connect to R-Pi when I want to watch video?

BTW, is this SD card? Sorry for another silly question. doh.gif

I dont know which specific SD card will work for you. <various people had various problems with SD cards working and not working>

If you have some on hand, I guess use those first.

I use a sandisk ultra mobile 32gb class 6 microSD in SDcard adapter.

Search this thread for previous recommendation for usb Wifi adapter.

If you get external HDD, you most likely need a powered usb hub too. With quality psu.
*
Need to start from scratch here so I don't have any material to build R-Pi HTPC. I wonder what kind of power adapter it will use? Last time I having hard time looking for power adapter for my DIY laptop cooler. Most of the shop ask me "Apa power adapter tu?" doh.gif

I think R-Pi is out of stock since no respond from Element14. And thinking to buy this:
http://my.element14.com/samsung/raspberry-...-4gb/dp/2113756
It's Debian pre-installed right? But quite pricey?

QUOTE(dr_zoidberg @ Nov 19 2012, 11:13 AM)
I used a Kingston 4GB and it's ok for the RaspPi. smile.gif
*
Kingston SD? Thanks mate. Will survey later. How much you buy and where did you order this thing? I mean R-Pi...

Update: Look like something wrong with my e-mail when I check just now shakehead.gif . R-Pi do have stock, but need to wait 3 weeks. And +RM20 for delivery charges. Hmmm... hmm.gif Going to buy or not huh... I wonder how much is the total cost? R-Pi, SD card, power adapter, adapeter powered USB hub, and USB wifi (this one can delay). And suddenly thinking of can RasXBMC work offline? I mean the codec etc? Need to install online like other Linux distro?

QUOTE(C-Fu @ Nov 19 2012, 12:26 PM)
Just get a standard sd card will do. download debian/ubuntu/ xbmc live (with ubuntu) and put it in the sd card.. easy to do. anything faster than class 4 sd card is good for a faster speed, but not necessary.
i wanna get one as well, but i don't want to pay first for an "out of stock" thing that i don't know when will it arrive.

raspi+xbmc live = all in one already. then up to you whether you want to serve your media from a usb drive, or usb wifi. xbmc is more than just a media player. it's a media organizer. offline works, but then it won't be able to fetch info of the movie from imdb and thetvdb to categorize/label your videos, movies, musics.
*
This answer most of my question... Hehe...
http://mymediaexperience.com/raspberry-pi-xbmc-with-raspbmc/

They are not saying out of stock but just need 3 weeks. Still it same that they doesn't have stock for now. laugh.gif With my limited time as I was in rural area, 3 weeks is a long wait for me. I don't mind the label etc as long it can be use as HTPC. I think I prefer R-Pi. Why?

1) Linux is fun.
2) Update and support from community for R-Pi distro.
3) IMO, It's a mini PC.
4) I badly want to build a Lego based casing for R-Pi. Hehe... thumbup.gif

BTW, without mpeg-2 and vc-1, I still can watch video right? Most of my video is avi, mp4, mkv, rmvb... Correct me if I'm wrong? And what is the use of above codec?

mpeg2 and vc1 is used in dvds and bluray. there's no bluray support for RasPi yet, so unless you wanna connect a dvd player into it, you should be set.

as for DVD iso i have no idea.99% of my videos are all HD or above DVD quality. if it's dvd quality then it's mp4. and all of my media works in xbmc windows, so i believe it will work for RasPi XBMC as well.
just note that XBMC RasPi isn't 100% supported yet. some things like DTS and like you mentioned VC-1 need a workaround.

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Raspb..._normal_XBMC.3F

unless you're planning on playing isos of dvd and bluray, i don't see the need for you to get the licenses. but then again, it's cheap about RM20 only. My suggestion is get it when you need it.
*
Thanks for the clarification man... No plan for a BD player or play DVD. Prefer convert to file and play.

Really? Where is the link? Because they say nothing about free delivery at their email. Just stated that RM20 will be charge for delivery since last year. hmm.gif

Thanks for the advice Sifu (C-Fu, get it?). smile.gif I think I'll just hold my purchase of the MK802+/MK808.
This is based on reading the previous replies from the thread and your thread regarding one-stop DIY HTPC.
Really good read I must say! Cheers. icon_rolleyes.gif Btw, should add some info regarding the MK 802 II and MK 802 III just so readers can further distinguish.

Seems like the RPI is much better than the Rockchip-ones as it's community/support is much larger. Just wished that it's in stock now!!! vmad.gif Or should I pay a bit more and get the ready stocked ones @ Garage Sales for RM125 instead of RM111? Any idea when is the re-stock? Thanks!
*
I'd also with you regarding support. I think worth it for RM 125 as after November, R-Pi will be RM 111+RM 20 for delivery. And the last time I ask, which is last week, 3 weeks need to be waited for new R-Pi. So my hand itchy, order MK 808 V2 this afternoon, this evening R-Pi restock and selling like hot apam balik. doh.gif

This sound stupid. But how to order from R-Pi? I'm very confused. IINM, can use M2U right? But the interface and how to doesn't really help. Anyone willing to help me to buy without extra charge? Hehe... Order price is RM 117.59 for 2 items. I think another RM20 for postage?
