How to RMA with Element14?

My Pi which I got last November has never really worked properly, something I put down to the power supply I used (two Samsung h/p 0.7A, one Samsung tablet 2A, two no name 1A & 2A)
Finally built my own and still getting no more than 4.4V at TP1/TP2. (It slowly drops to 4.2 when it starts rebooting)
Checked resistance of F3 polyfuse and got a whopping 1.6 Ohm.

How to RMA?

Just email them. Explain in detail about your problem. Some photos will help.
Then they will investigate and if they decide to accept your claim, they will arrange collection of your Pi from you.

Ordered 2 camera modules on Friday 26/7, arrived on Monday 29/7.

Today received a call from element14 asking whether I was a business user, I said no I'm more of a gadget collector. He said OK and hang up. I wonder what was that all about...
*
Nothing biggie. They just want to separate personal and business account. Apparently with business account you will get....well, more business oriented services.

I've managed to set up motion detector on the pi and pair it with my synology's Surveillance Station from this guide: http://rbnrpi.wordpress.com/project-list/s...tion-detect-cam

But now I'm stuck at how to make the webcam auto start on boot.

Any way to disable the camera's LED? It is way too bright to my liking. From the pic below it is the brightest of all my gadgets

Have you tried putting an entry in /etc/rc.local to auto start on boot?

As for the LED, perhaps the less sophisticated way is an option. Just tape it over with black electrical tape wink.gif

1) This choice is OK. You will get a Raspberry Pi board and a case

2) All Raspberry Pi has SD Card slot. You need an SD card to boot your Pi.

What do you plan to do with it? If you have another PC and a home network, you could just SSH to the Pi. No need to buy another mouse/keyboard.

Question about this USB powered hub..

1) If you plug in e.g external HDD to this USB, how is it then connected to the rasPi to access it?
*
Each USB hub should have one upstream port. This goes to the host (RasPi).
In your picture, that would be the white port.

this vid here shows you how to attach USB powered hub
but you have to jump start the power first.

1) Power up pi using normal power supply w/o any peripherals attached
2) plug USB Hub into wall
3) plug USB Hub into Rpi
4) unplug normal power supply
Yes, you could back-power your Pi from a powered USB hub. Please take note that this is an "unofficial" way. You are bypassing the protection fuse that you will get when using the "official" microUSB port. So let's say you are using an el cheapo USB hub and somehow it manages to deliver significantly more than the required voltage to your Pi, it could burn out or even worse, it could create potential fire-hazard. So, if you have to do this, don't leave it unattended.

Question:
so you just can plug anything to the USB powered hub and raspi will always be able to detect I/O data?
*
Yup, that's the whole point of using a USB hub. Check the connected device by using "lsusb" command.

Where to buy a Raspberry Pi in Malaysia?

Ubitap Components - shameless plug here, I run this webstore tongue.gif
element14
RS Components
Thundermatch

...and there are a few individual sellers in lelong.com.my , mudah.my , ebay.com.my and not forgetting LYN's garage sales.

Price varies from RM111 to RM150 for RPi 512MB RAM Model B board and from RM95 to RM130 for RPi 256MB RAM Model A board.
Be sure to check the accessory bundles, you can't run a standalone RPi board. You might get a good value for your money there.
Check on the availability first before you buy, else you might have to wait for days or weeks.

Perhaps the OP can put this info on the first page?

No, we cover DOA cases. For manufacturing defect we have to send back to the manufacturer for claim.

Ubitap do you sell HDMI to DVI converter? I want to hook up my RPI to a LCD monitor that only has DVI input.
*
Yes we do. There are two types, depending on whether you want to use HDMI cable or DVI cable.

Yup, it gets from the Pi. Don't take too much from the power rails. A couple of small LEDs should be OK. Anything more, you should get additional power source or else, you might damage your Pi.

The GPIO pins are unbuffered, unprotected and not 5V tolerant. Take extra care when you do the wiring!

do you recommend a raspberry pi for a complete newbie in programming?

QUOTE(quadcube @ Feb 13 2014, 07:08 PM)
no laugh.gif but if u are doing it as a hobby, electronic stuff, then raspi is a good start
*
On the contrary, one of the main reason Raspi was designed is to encourage learning of computer science and this includes programming.

For kids (also for not so kids), the graphical programming Scratch is installed in Raspbian by default - http://scratch.mit.edu/

If you want to do web programming (CSS, HTML, Javascript), there is Google Coder - http://googlecreativelab.github.io/coder/

Python language is very popular within the RasPi community. Making use of Codecademy + Minecraft Pi, this is a great book for learning Python - http://arghbox.wordpress.com/2013/06/13/pr...on-early-draft/

You can work with Java on Raspi as well - http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/4920

So, most major programming languages can run on the Pi. There are tons of resources from the community - most of them, if not all are free. I highly recommend you to make use of Raspberry Pi if you want to start learning programming.

Oh, if you have time check-out this Raspberry Pi education manual: http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/Raspberry...tion_Manual.pdf

Yes, nothing to worry about. About 1.2G or so goes to the NOOBS recovery partition. Type 'lsblk'

If you want to have more space, do a direct image install instead.

You are right, it doesn't stack up. We are looking too. Haven't find a nice display with a reasonable price yet.
