element 14 sells one for $28

and usb micro cable
http://my.element14.com/pro-signal/hk-us10...sb-a/dp/2085464

I might also use a old dell pocket pc charger.. rated for 5.4v, 2.5A. But will require me to convert the cable from pin type to micro usb. I will measure the voltage first since it is about 7yr+ old, maybe the voltage dropped a bit. < will have to pay very close attention to the + / - , since it is not my forte >

I pick up 32gb class 6 sandisk mobile ultra microSDHC+adapter. from Garage sale.

Now even got 64gb class 6 sandisk mobile ultra microSDHC+adapter. from RM$195

I choose class 6 because, I read before that class 10 is fast for small writes. While class 6 is good for bigger writes, which is better for installing a running OS.

You can probably just stick to 32gb. Since now, samba share works quite well. Can share it with pc or nas it seems(i dont have nas yet but others were having good tries.) heck even 16gb might work.

Unless ur using arch linux. your installation will probably take 1gb. so 16gb end up probably about 14gb usable.

Some Microsoft wireless keyboards don't work well with pi. Can't login at all. Hv to buy a cheap USB keyboard. Sigh.

Not a rant. But true story bro.

I ordered 512rasp-pi on monday morning immediately after it was posted here.

Then that night, I check my order and realise I forgot bout the micro usb cable. So I placed a 2nd order, putting in "free freight"

This morning, Thursday, I received a call from Element14(Singapore number), telling me my supposed delivery today is held up due to lorry broke down by courier.

my micro usb cable from element 14 arrived 30minutes later via Gdex delivery motocycle.

The order with 512pi, solder iron, digital multimeter, solder coil,... still not delivered.

So sometimes, it is possible for the order that was put in later to arrive earlier.

I hope my pi was not squashed by the courier or custom...

The element14 sender address on the waybill has a ss13/1K Subang Jaya address. So no worries about customs at least!

My v1 rasp-pi, was without a casing since day one. I have it on 24X7 for the past 3-5months??? I contemplated to get casing multiple times, even thought of hacking some clocks/router casing to use it. But too busy/lazy keyboard warrior therefore no case yet. Dont worry too much, unless you not careful or have too much static electricity due to aircon+carpets. I just touch some metal casing and/or just hold the edges of the pcb. I think for me so far no problem.

Some times, 3-4times a day, I would plug and unplug the hdmi cable, or the sd cards. So overall, it is not because I dont touch it.

So temporary, if you dont mind the bare pcb, or the annoyingly bright led. let your pi be free.

<I might still get a case, but will see.> so many other things I want to get for the pi before a case. Maybe a camera, wireless keyboard with powered usb ports, wifi, usb harddrive, ups/5v battery, gertboard... motors, lightning sensors, led lights...

<I already have 4 keyboards on various PCs/laptops.... so it is getting absolutely crazy redundant.>

saving that $20-30 would help to fund other stuff to experiment with I hope.

anyone know how to use the pi to control leds and stuff via the GRIO ?

i am total noob here .. I need some basic guide here.

My HDMI cables are stiff, and heavy.. and it's heavier than the pi itself..

i do not have spare monitors , mouse and keyboard to play with it .

the cable will tilt the pi with the casing .. cry.gif

need to invent some solid casing.

hackaday site is a good place to start looking for information.

For led lights, driving motors ect, I believe the first step is still to get a Gertboard started.

*I will probably learn python programming first then step up a board.

I found a pdf version of BuildingSkillsinPython. forgot the link... but here is a web version

http://www.itmaybeahack.com/book/python-2.6/html/index.html

download. I think I found it via element14's learning portal.

edit: added another sos for RTC for pi by adafruit

http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopi...lit=rtc#p195006

Will have to find a way to get it shipped to Malaysia... or another supplier. Pls explore.<cause i have yet to buy from adafruit. although it seems like in future I will have to since it sells lots of tinkering stuff >

tempted to try out this raspberry pi...i would like to know what should i order in order to basically start it out as a noob? do i really need the SD card? and was wondering what is the different between the hdmi cable sold in element 14 compared to our normal hdmi cable? is it a mini hdmi cable from the other end? i mean raspberry using mini hdmi connector instead?

Quickstart guide at Raspberry pi foundation.

Check this list of verified gears which you may already have to save on buying additional stuff

If you already have a pc<with keyboard and mouse>. you can SSH into the pi to work on it.

so just a ethernet cable+ usb powered cable, + sd card

if you dont have access to ethernet port and only have wireless internet and feel generous, get wifi usb adapter... but in those case you need low powered ones or another usb hub to connect it and to connect any peripheral that draw more power then the "usual"<150mA>

IF using as a xbmc/multimedia player, you can even skip a dedicated remote controller as pi now have CEC support, which will allow a TV with HDMI 1.4(i think) to provide commands to the pi via the hdmi cable. So you contol you pi with your existing TV remote. simple.

what are you trying to do?

If just playing with xbmc/multimedia stuff. Just put a hook on your hd tv and hang the pi off the connected hdmi cable? Pi being so light will probably not tear your pi's pcb apart. Just find a cool spot, or find some plastic container-slice it open, photoframe stand, router stands, ect ect just prop it up.

no spare monitors, can use tv. or just ssh in. then dont even need mouse and keyboard.

I use this Putty ssh program

I use this putty ssh program - navigate to download urself
