What do you guys think about classic steel road bikes? Apollo, Nishiki, Raleigh, Miyata and all the classic bikes of yestercentury? I think they are a beaut! Sturdy frame and reliable.

Too bad its hard too find bargains for rusty ol' steelers here. Always wanted to do a restoration project. Found them still hanging in old bike shops for 2k++. Its a shame it never rolled out and enjoy the road.

Here is a picture for you guys to drool on. smile.gif

I think they look more comfortable than modern road bikes. I could be wrong. But most are very expensive. Especially these italian bikes. But i think they are nice. The designs are timeless in my opinion. The craftsmanship, the decals. Or its just cause i like old stuff. HAHA

Well, I hope its okay to ask you guys about whether this bike is a good buy or not? In regards to it being a commuter. Maintenance and upgrading

The link

Can u guys give me your honest opinions. Thanks

Thanks for the opinion dude. No, i dont mind second hand bikes at all. As long as they are still working, no cracks and (or) is cheap to service. A little rust that can be sanded is the least of my concerns.

Well, i like skinny tubes and chrome and nickel plating. I thought since they are old, made of steel so they might be cheap. But i found that they are quite expensive. I don't have deep pockets. And i'm gonna use my bike for commuting (which isnt that far pon). Found a lot of brand new classics from the 80s still hanging on shop walls but they cost thousands. sigh..

those are jacked up prices... if you do a search for shimano 600... you'd understand what i mean... costs even more than what entry level shimano's are nowadays.. and worst if they are un-opened and un-used ones... although not antique... but people appreciates it strangely and that is what caused the prices to skyrocket..

if you get a lemon... i doubt it'd be cheap to service... my best guess if you wan one which is in decent condition... it might costs half if not more as much as the price of the bike itself...
*
I see. Doesn't really look like its practically or economically sustainable to have an old road bike then. My hopes went up a bit when i read like international forums saying that old bikes are cheap and cost effective to run. If that is so, maybe I'll just stick to my current GTA bike then. smile.gif

thats very lucky of you vinn_ann.

well, i think some polish and elbow grease might help making it cleaner and much much pretty (we know shiny bikes are faster especially the red ones right?) Jk.. hehe

I think any good bicycle shop can help you restore the bike. General servicing might be best for the first step. If the chain is in bad condition, get it replaced. grease the cables and tune the shifters and derailleurs. I think for starters, thats already good enough to make it going again right?

Now that's a good question. Have not seen much slick tires bigger than 1.5 sold locally. I know of 2 guys who uses 1.7 slicks, will be seeing them again on Wednesday for a night ride. I can check with them to see where they got it from

Out of curiosity, why look for bigger tires for road use?
*
Cool. Keep us posted man.

I run Maxxis Detonators 1.5. And i think why i want to run bigger tires is because:

1. I think it looks sweeeeeet
2. I commute, carry my laundry and groceries on my bike and the tires im running are quite weak. Punctured them due to heavy load
3. Better cornering
4. Plusher ride
5. Resists potholes and pinch-punctures compared to skinnier tires

Well, at least thats what i think. Cuz my standard MTB tires (those generic unbranded ones) seem to protect themselves from punctures better than the detonators. And so i thought "If only there were road treads on a 2.0 tire". Well, i could be wrong.

QUOTE(malleus @ Mar 26 2012, 09:33 PM)
Actually, don't think the punctures are problem with the 1.5 tires. Chances are that its more of a Maxxis Detonator issue. These tires, when they work they really work well, but if unlucky, really can puncture like mad also.

Also, if you're to look at touring bike tires, the tires are similar in size to the 1.5 too, and these bikes tends to carry a heavy load.

The punctures that I experienced on the detonators are mainly due to debris. Had not had any due to pinch flats yet (but then I pump the pressure all the way up to 70 psi of the max of 80psi)

So far been lucky, no punctures for the last month or so, but when I run my detonators out, I'm gonna try a different brand of tire next.
*
I think ur right. Since the detonators are considered training tires. Touring/commuting tires should not be as weak.

Running detonators at 70+Psi is what i also do. But air seem to escape very easily. Maybe its due to the weak sidewall of the tire. Dontcha think?

If you pump your tires every week, than its kinda the same for me too.

Really loves the joke about the detonators. Hilarious!!!!!!! well, It is like that. When its a good month, its puncture free. when its a bad month (mine was last month) i got 5 punctures. NO JOKE!

Well, i'm still looking for 2.0 road wheels. Seems hard to find a pair.

I started slowly on the roller now. I had few questions actually.
-When i was sitting on the saddle, my leg are unable to touch the ground (quite large margin) with my leg strech to the max even when wearing my cycling shoes. Is this normal or they person set the seat post to high? If i lean one side at this position i will be in unstable position and drop down.

-Whne stopping on the traffic light, do you guys sit on the saddle while leaning one side while waiting for the traffic light to go green or u guys stand in front of the top tube.

I just wanna know if this is normal on road bike or the bike shop stuff it out which i doubt so since they are quite well verse in what that do, even usual a laser thing to do the bike fit.

What ya u guys think about it? Still not used to the seat pos that high.  rclxub.gif

well, I stand on both legs with the TT below my crotch. Have to be stable. and safe at the same time. At the traffic lights, its not a race.

There is a Kenda Kwik Roller which is available in 26 x 2.0

Schwalbe

Michelin Pilot Sport

Conti Comfort Contact, 26 x 2.1

The last 2 have exact model names in car tyres

Not hard to find, just hard to get. You might have to source it off the net if it is not back orderable here.

Here is an example off ebay.
http://www.ebay.com.my/itm/2-x-Schwalbe-Ko...=item3372dac9d0

5 punctures is what i call wrong timing, not bad tyre as it can happen to any tyres. I had a friend who suffered 6 punctures in 1 long ride, exhausted everyone's spare tubes on that occasion

*
Alright. Thanks for the heads up. Seems like there are a lot of choices to choose from.

Well, before riding a commençal, i just rode a 500 ringgit GTA for two years (bike is still good). Still have the satisfaction. And I'm sure I was super motivated to catch up to expensive bikes on the road. And i can get them most of the time. not everytime. But it sure made me fired up!

Btw guys, just asking, is it a good idea to have a secondary fork? I ride an MTB and i just hate the wobbly sus fork. I like it rigid for daily commutes. And no matter how hard i stiffen the sus, it is still bouncy. So im considering/berangan-angan for a secondary fork. So i want to know if there are some guys who swap forks regularly. Kejap bouncy sus, kejap rigid ones..

haha..if got money, you can buy any bike..best to stick with your budget and be happy with your purchase. Things started to get ugly if you are not satisfied with your purchase...got poisoned by friends...feeling super inferior when riding up genting sempah with the rest of those super duper rich cyclists with their super duper expensive machines tongue.gif

owh btw during my last ride to GS, there were two guy riding fixie all the way up...single speed..cheap steel bike..but STRONG muscular legs...hehe smile.gif

btw...Rodalink selling FR1 for RM4199. damn expensiveeeee~
*
Kudos! No matter what sort of bike you ride, no matter how much it costs. Whats important is that you have fun, go out, cycle. I don't think that having an inferior bike means that we must feel inferior. Should feel more fired up to beat those with better bikes. Train more, ride more, get stronger. Having a lesser bike doesnt make one a lesser cyclist. I totally agree with you man.

Topeak rack? They do look awesome... I saw solutions on the net that says to use p-clips. Sayang pulak if using them fasteners might scratch the paint job.

i've seen ace hardware having them too... maybe the hardware shops don't call them p-clips.. bring along a picture of it so you don't risk ayam dan itik talk with the shop owner...

Hi guys....

Blackburn universal bike rack. It looks like it mounts on the axle hubs. Seems like a very practical way for putting a rack on my eyelet-free bike.

Because my search for p-clips have been fruitless (ace hardware je blom pergi) i am thinking about buying this rack from amazon. Anyone of you guys have bought from amazon? how does the shipping and tax usually cost? is it expensive to ship to malaysia?

And what other secure online stores do you guys buy your stuff from? Do you guys buy online?

Too bad, shipping by amazon for the on-axle rack is gonna be expensive... so imma gonna find it somewhere laa.. can also try if it fits or not...

anyone know where to find shops that carry a large selection or racks to choose from? like touring bike shops or something similar? I have been to a lota of bike shops and they don't have it... Is there no demand for bike racks?
