those foldies are still too big to lug around...

last time my friend went to japan for a trip (not a cyclist)... he took pictures of the japanese on their daily long train rides to work and noticed a lot of them ride this teensy little bikes...showed me some actual pictures...

looks something like below...
user posted image

i don't know how light they get and the wheels looks ridiculously small for normal riding... but according to what i understand... the japs ride this daily from their house to the high speed train stations for their daily commute to work...

http://www.smartcog.co.jp/Products/koma.htm

i think it is crazy but it looks much more portable to people who might have to lug the thing up, down, left, right and center into their crazy small office cubicle...

never seen it before in malaysia... mostly because i don't think it is rideable in general sense... just to get you from point a to point b...

for me... it looks much easier to store and requires less space to open the bike up...

A lot of reason, ppl is not cycling to commuter station, like weather, safety, the foldies price, location of work.

if the intention is to be a green motive... some sacrifices has to be made and excuses cannot be the sole reasons to stop progress dead in it's track...

price wise... i think most bike shop bring in foldies with the mindset of it being leisure rides which resulted in more pricier bikes... i am sure that there are more affordable ones out there...

That day when I am cycling in Kesas another cyclist complained that I change gear too frequent.. hmm thus I'm kinda off balance (due to jerk?) when I switch gear.. he say I should stay on to one gear and just pedal harder to get over it..

Hmm the way I look at he pedal.. he seems to press very hard on crank..

How frequent are your gear changes? Also, easing up on your pedaling helps to reduce the jerk when you change gears. not to mention, its easier on your gears too

definitely not how I'll do it. mashing the pedals like that is a good way to tire yourself out unnecessarily

Doing the kesas route, I use my big chain ring (42T) all the way. For cassette, 17T on flats, 15T to 13T on downhill descends, and 21T or 19T on the climbs. This is a fast cruising speed, without any sprints.

Your chain ring and cassette are different sized from mine, but the T numbers should give you an indication of how to adjust.

Usually finish the Puchong -> Summit -> Sri Petaling (Endah Parade) -> Puchong route in less than an hour (26.5km)

leisure is more expensive... like most of our bikes...

comparing it to basic bikes where you have no worry throwing it on the sidewalk when you go run into the shops... they have more stuff that tickles the fancy of customers... paint job and stuff li tat...

everyone has their own style.. you can be a pedal masher or you can be a pedal tickler... there is no right or wrong as each individuals physique is different to the next individual...

riding and trying to maintain a stable and higher pedal cadences usually demand very frequent shifting, that i do not deny...

some people also shift more frequently because they do not want their legs to go into shock having to suddenly slow down and increase in pedal resistance or go too fast and vice versa... they feel that it disrupts their rhythm and tires them out quite fast...

so, it is up to yourself to experiment and find out what works...

generally.. i would say that you should ride a slightly heaver gear if you are drafting someone as you will be having less work load sitting behind... you can afford to let your legs recover a bit during those periods as you do not need to push that hard to tag the wheel in front of you...

ehh... don't recall i have that problem.. usually only when starting maybe it could not pickup the HR strap... i just dismount the head unit wait 10 seconds or depending on your patience and remount it and make sure i am standing in facing the head unit so it picks up the signals...

it is either that or you have james bond's chest (too much bulu tetek)... i jus counter that by either spitting on the heart rate strap or pissing on it... water is the best conductor... that or you have those hr monitor electrode conducive gel thing... (was jus kiddin, hope you don't do it)... but this i am serious... shave your chest...

or also maybe position problem... usually the lowest the strap can go is the bottom most ribcage bone in my case.. .any lower, it detect no pulse at all..

or maybe even battery... or ... i dunno...it can be anything...
tried everything still not working..i guess the transmitter kaput or something. send the whole unit back to Yeap ss2, hopefully can get new one..left the unit at the shop..don't know when he will call.

I sent in the box complete with every little components inside it, wrist brackets, extra feet for the cadence magnet, etc..hopefully they don't lost any of the item...now my bike is running without a computer sad.gif

btw where can get FSA handlebar eh? hard to find...

that's weird... usually the thing that kaputs first is the cadence... i haven't hear the HR strap will die...

thought you bought it from KH.. i think KH might warranty it faster... but assuming it came from them..

yeap don't seem to carry the sigma line anymore.. don't know what they plan to sell for computers...

FSA.. i think you give GH a call and see if they have them... last i went i saw they don't display them anymore on their shop floors... dunno if they stop taking them in or they hide it somewhere...

you'll get used to it one day....

riding in a pack is not how 1 rider alone rides... it depends on the riders behind and front to obey the rules of the pack.. if 1 acts like a loose canon and increases speed and decreases abruptly and randomly... a crash is bound to happen... and most often... enthusiastic newbies will stick their front wheels so close to your rear that it is increases the risks of wheel overlap and crashes...

most important is ride your own pace and keep your line straight... it is okay to let a bit of gap grow as long as you don't let the group escape from you....

here comes the scary question... how serious are you? (ride around parks / leisure rides with GF/BF?? or you are into it head first)

and how much you willing to part with?

Ya, agreed with you.

a lot of riders lack of experience when riding in group as i can see in Inter-State !!
1 cyclist swinging right and left... and worse always wanted to be front pack...
people cursing him like hell !

not only that, after getting serious, are you allowed to ride long hours? example from 7:30am until 12pm for 100 plus KM sunday ride.

i can see fews in my group always rider faster / shorter to get back home earlier... reason: accompany GF...

you just need practice. you'll eventually be able to get the gap down to just 6 inches or less

Guys,

Does anyone know where I can get ceramic bearings to fit mavin cosmic elite hubs?

try contacting creative mill... they are the authorized distributor for ceramic speed in malaysia...

ceramic speed has wheel bearing kits for most wheels... you just need to find out what bearing sizes your cosmic elite is running... if they have the information for your wheel, then all is good.. if not, you have lots of research ahead of you...

not going to be cheap but ceramic speed is one of the best if not the best ceramic bearing makers...

i think the recent years cosmic elites run on 1 x 6001 and 2 x 608..

to start you off...

http://creativemill.net/contact

ceramic speed online store
http://shop.ceramicspeed.com/products/132-...grade-kits.aspx

try digging around mavic tech site and see if you can find bearing information on the model you have... make sure you get the year model of your cosmic elite correct...

thanks for the info butthead....gulp, did not know the ceramic bearings were that costly, was thinking closer to RM 300 plus....

"are you allowed to ride long hours?"...you say that like it's a bad thing... maybe it's the mother not allowing it (acceptable)... wife (not-so)... GF (you better get rid of her before you get serious about cycling and ruining your wedding vegetables)

i ride fast (not sure if it's fast blush.gif ) and short too ... but that is just cos i'm lazy...

riding in a pack.. there is a saying... "don't be a hero unless you are sure you can pull the group all the way"... what we used to do is if some jackass go riding up front... we all just sit back and draft that fella all the way until he learns his lesson... sometimes, there are some bad ass mofos in the group... they will just sarcastically tell the fella to ride faster as he is slowing and no one will refuse to take a pull until he realize that he is being played...

i don't like this way of dealing with them... but it seems to work by humiliating them sometimes...

this is call self poisoning... or eat too much big head vegetables... no cure for this..

at least you didn't sell your car to buy your bike...hahahah

the new bike looks blingy....mavic decals are always pretty... especially the ones from 2011...

i think there is no reason to get that close to the wheel in front... riding in a single file is all about trust... it takes a rider to trust the person in front and back of him to be able to ride comfortably ... and also for him to trust that the rider sandwiching him trusts him not to make sudden acceleration and decelerations....

with this trust and good communication of road conditions... the pack will automatically ride in a tight and safe manner... rather than having to constantly and nervously mark and watch the wheel in front up to the point that you don't see the road ahead...

having good vision of the road ahead lets you anticipate what the group will go through and do so you won't get sudden shocks of finding your mate braking hard in front...

that is why most closely knitted group will go into defcon 1 when they see a newbie in the group, and especially those with the a face that says "watch me open up a can of whup-ass on you old farts"
