They're used mostly as decorations. Other than that, it supposely generates negative ions to refreshen up your room like the posts above.

For me, its a subtle gentle light deco in the room, really nice.

This one is in my room, its a teacup holder salt lamp. Really expensive last time. Over rm150 i think, should be from Poland.
