I think the 808 is overpriced. I see it catering to a very niche market. Is it a phone with a camera or a camera which can make phone calls? There is no balance grafting such a high quality camera system onto a phone running (almost) outdated Symbian. It's like putting a 200HP engine into a plain looking family car. Most users will like the camera but not the OS. Nokia should have no fear that it will cannibalize Lumia sales. However Elop is paranoid and desperate.

If the Pureview camera is running ios or Android it would be a killer product. Even WP7.5 would get a boost out of it. But Symbian (cough, cough) is a sunset OS.

If you want an excellent camera phone the N8 is really good enough. The price is right too, less than RM1000 now. Sure, it looks outdated and you probably want to hide it from your friends but it gets the job done. It even has an FM transmitter.

To me the dream phone is not the Pureview camera and MeeGo, it is the N8 camera and MeeGo. The Pureview is too much camera for a phone. If you really want such quality you would bring a DSLR. A camera phone is mainly for casual shots where quality isn't paramount. Like catching a pretty girl wearing a short skirt on a windy day.  smile.gif
*
Altough it's not running MeeGo, I'm still glad it's not Windows Phone OS. I believe many Symbian owners are glad too, and for those Andorid users who are looking for flexibility, freedom, customization, they'll be glad that it isn't WP. Although there're some that said they hope it's a WP, but most likely they don't know about WP restrictions and limitations or even used one, they just want WP because it's the newer OS (as usual, general perception = new is better, old is outdated).

To me, Symbian is still a better and proper smartphone OS, with better contacts management, support for 3G Video Calls, etc. It's working FINE for a smartphone. It needs to work on the notifications and it's lacking apps. If there is decent apps available, I would favor it over Android. Both Symbian and Android are good competition against each other and alternatives for one another, as both have the flexibility, customizations, etc.
For Symbian owners, their best alternatives would be Android as WP will be a major lockdown and loosing a lot of features. Similarly, if Android users want to move to Nokia, their best alternative will be Symbian, OS wise, not talking about apps.

N8 is good, but it's camera performance isn't so. I have sold the N8.
Have you tried the 808 PureView? I'm actualy very surprised and shock when I see one of the video; It's sooo smooth and fast, and the zooming also smooth unlike conventional zoom with the juddering. The focusing speed is a fast. Finally the video and audio recording is simply amazing. I went and test out briefly at Nokia Store, the camera performance is indeed very smooth and fast, N8 is slow and laggy, AF speed is also slow. I would say the 808 is quite a major improvement over the N8, personally. Moreover, when I shot at full resolution 38MP, I zoom in maximum, it's still sharp albeit there is noise at higher ISO, but still sharp. I'm actually very impressed, but I'm not really sure on the low light performance as the Nokia Store isn't really low light.

This is the video:

Be careful of Andy. He will poison you until you cannot tahan.  drool.gif  drool.gif haha!

The 808 is a fine camera and video cam but it is on Symbian with 360x640 resolution . The thing is, are you prepared to sell off your N9 and get a 808 as your main phone? The camera may be good but it is only one function of a smartphone. Will Symbian suit you in terms of UI, apps, social networking, future upgrade, etc? Or are you going to carry 2 devices?

I think this is a hard choice for many users. Nice camera, shame about the OS. Not that Symbian is bad but Nokia has sounded the death gong for it and it is just not able to attract many developers.
*
LoL, just stating the 808 PureView improvements over N8, and surprising performance. Never expected from Symbian. The camera is really smooth and fast, unlike other Symbians.

Nope, not gonna sell the N9 nor N900. It's a masterpiece collection, lol.
808 not gonna be main phone, don't think I want that; If I get it, I will try to keep it simple to preserve more battery life and also less resource running for smoother performance.

Before Maemo, I'm Symbian user for long time and it's hard to change to other OS that time even though I have Windows Mobile; But Symbian it's still a better and proper smartphone, even today, it's still better than Android as a smartPHONE; it's contacts management, SMS, or phone functionality still works better than the rest so far.

I'm already carrying 2 devices, SEX Pro and N9. The hard thing to decide is how will 808 fit in. I still want N9's social networking and sharing capability, mainly. Android is the apps and choices of browser, have to check on Symbian's part. If Symbian were to replace the Android, then I need to think about letting go hardware keyboard and may suffer, making N9 the primary device. May suffer without hardware keyboard, lol.

Hard choice for non-Symbian users. For Symbian users, I believe they will be glad as they're been waiting for a flagship Symbian device or a good Symbian device to replace their aging ones (especially the N8 owners). With so many Symbian owners, I wonder if there's enough 808 in Malaysia for them since according to Nokia Rep from SG, it will be limited.
There're also many other non-internet savvy users using Symbian, mostly not the younger generations, e.g. my uncles and aunties, some of them still using Symbian and they'll be gladly upgrade to 808 I believe, the problem now is, got stock or not?

Basically... those ppl look down at symbian r those ppl nvr try Belle...
Issue is not symbian but the user...
*
Another reason is "impression" or "perception"
"Symbian ah? Old OS, outdated" --> Judge by cover/name

So, sometimes, people tend to use NEW name
NEW - "Wah, NEW OS, good one"
Add in some marketing and push the brand name, it will get even better...

Not that I think Symbian isn't a capable OS, it is definitely better than WP7.5 but Nokia has sounded the death gong for Symbian just like MeeGo. Symbian isn't able to attract developers now so it will fall behind in apps. It is also hobbled by its 360x640 resolution, the lowest for smartphones now.

Another tragedy is that Symbian apps are freely pirated so many developers just give up on the platform. There is very little piracy protection as those knowledgeable ones can intercept the .sis file before they are deleted from the phone and distribute.
*
Yup, there's the goods and there's the bads.
For me, the death is doesn't really bother me, if there is a better spec device capable of running Maemo/MeeGo, I don't mind getting it.
But then, most people would mind even if it's not important.
E.g. the OS is stable and has little issues, people just want to know still supported and got update, maybe as a sense of satisfaction.
Many people use Windows and never bother what updates are available.

Let's wait for Andy to get this Pureview 808 and review it.   whistling.gif

Which is better in terms of apps - Symbian or MeeGo?

I think in term of sheer number of apps MeeGo is the worse but what other platform have apps like call recorder, call blocker, Easy Answer, speaker switcher, AutoCallSms, Billboard, Phone Counter and buttons on the homescreen which can switch bluetooth, lock screen, switch 2G/3G/Dual, off/reboot, etc?

These apps which can directly control the hardware are not allowed in closed OS like ios or WP7.5. WP7.5 is the most restrictive one as they don't even have a screenshot app or data monitor app  laugh.gif  because their developers have to work in a sandbox environment.

These are apps which are really useful unlike apps you download to your phone and never use them. For eg. when I'm driving I use Easy Answer to answer a call by lifting it to my ear, no need to swipe of press anything. What's the point of having 100,000 apps in WP7.5 if you can't even get an app to monitor your data usage?

Recently ios6 copied 2 features which were already in Symbian long ago. One is the ability to reject a call by sending a sms. The other is the ability to put yourself offline to everybody except a favoured list.

To my knowledge there are only 2 platforms where the alarm will still work even if the phone is off - MeeGo and Symbian. Android, ios and of course the sh*thouse WP7.5 cannot do it. As for the highly useful low power idle screen info, I think it's still only MeeGo and Symbian.

With Elop killing off Symbian and MeeGo they won't last for long. The N9 will die first and maybe, just maybe, the Pureview 808 can be an upgrade path for N9 users. Depending on a good review by Andy of course.  tongue.gif
*
LoL, PureView upgrade for N9? I think only the camera, video playback, video recording department?
OS wise, still MeeGo is a better choice, as I said before, MeeGo is a good replacement/upgrade for Symbian; They should work on MeeGo as planned, where MeeGo will be their high end devices. The MeeGo devices is to be placed a level above smartphone as it's a different class from normal smartphone OS. Sadly, Elop comes in and the roadmap got scrapped off.

Before Maemo (or N900), I cannot switch away from Symbian as it's contacts management is good, with groupings, SMS, SMS archiving/organizing to folders (e.g. Jokes, Birthday Wishes, etc), etc. Maemo OS is the one that gives such great amazing experience that I'm willing to give up and loosing all my SMS stored for like more than 5 years since Nokia 6600. MeeGo would also be the same as it's like a good replacement for Symbian, just that they should apply/implement Symbian's contacts management and SMS into Maemo/MeeGo.

As for Androids, I think around or after Froyo is when it's gets better, and with Full Flash support, but the main issue is still the poor multi-tasking and memory management. Really awful even with ICS, Symbian is still much better, sorry to say this, and ICS seems to introduce new problems as well. Overall, both Symbian and Android has it's own strengths and weaknesses; Personally, I actually think and feel Symbian is better as a smartPHONE, it's lacking on apps and games, and of course, the hardwares and screen resolution support.
Probably I haven't used a good Android before, or maybe I just cannot stand it's poor multi-tasking. Spoilt with Maemo & MeeGo TRUE multi-tasking tongue.gif

Symbian does have call recording right? There's also voice recorder and several other things. If not wrong, it's been available since the early Symbians. I remember my 6600, installed tons of apps and games, even NGage games. While others are playing 8 bit? like Java games, we're playing much higher quality KOF from NGage and not to mentioned multi-play via bluetooth.

iOS and WP needless to say, they're out of the comparison; To me, they're just a mediaOS. I don't see them as a smartphone due to the characteristics (similar with media player).

Same prob here. Tried 3 times. In the Store reviews there they mentioned after failed install to open file manager go into /var/cache/apt/archives/partial & install the fennec_13 deb file there. Unfortunately it still reports version 12 to me. Give up! doh.gif

Update: Just noticed MOLOME have new update to ver 2.1.5 but also failing to install. Did the same trick go to the folder, found molome_2.1.5 deb file, installed & reported back version 2.04 pula.  shakehead.gif
*
I tried above, got ver 13, but the file name goes like this:
fennec_13.0_armel.fennec.FAILED
LoL

WHen I execute via dpkg -i command, it gives me error that Aegis is rejecting. All listed package files rejected.

Just now re-try with "cd .." finally go back to root directory and now its working, Aegis allow also already, which same issue with zachary.
Will try deleting it now.

EDIT:
Successfully deleted the files.

Try using developer mode and rm /path/file command in terminal to delete.

I don't know why you guy are having so many problems with Firefox 13. I uninstalled FF12, download FF13 .deb file to PC, copy to phone and install.
*
I use OVI Store, that's why. Seems everyone who use OVI Store also face this problem as I read from tmo...
There's also alternatives, Nightly, it's FF15 and the HTML5 test yields better result than PC version?

OK I uploaded the FF13 deb file to a file sharing site,. You can download it from http://www.sendspace.com/file/cqvwd5

It's 25.5MB

Btw, if you want to download the deb file from ovi store, just browse to the app you want and replace the part of the web address from ? onwards with /download/ . Only works with free apps.
*
Thanks bro. I think maybe there's some problem with direct installation from OVI Store as discuss in TMO. Maybe they're fixing it.

Further prove on what I highligted before:
http://felipec.wordpress.com/2011/06/21/my...-elop-on-meego/

QUOTE
As I explained Elop, if we wanted to ship 10 devices with OMAP 3 (the same platform of the Nokia N9) today, there is absolutely no problem from the software point of view: all the UI software remains the same, and the hardware adaptation would probably require few modifications, if any.
QUOTE
Funnily enough, Windows Phone only supports one hardware platform: Snapdragon (and in fact only certain chips). So MeeGo already has an advantage over Windows Phone; you could ship more devices on more hardware platforms. All we need is the word.

Not to mention the fact that most of the hardware adaptation is already done by hardware vendors. They do it because it’s the easiest way to demo their hardware (it’s Linux). I tried to explain that on an earlier post where I show many examples of people porting MeeGo to a plethora of devices (it’s easy and fun).

Doesn't matter anymore. Meltimi & QT got killed, I think I've lost all hope on Nokia liau. The last good strategy gone. So much for bringing QT to next billion of devices....
*
It's getting really ugly, cuts 10,000 jobs including their homeland office.
Now even selling patents and their $$ not just from Lumia, but also from patent royalty. So, Lumia sales is really bad going worst?

I'm actually very curious why they never see something that is very wrong ever since they announce death of Symbian? Now it's sooo bad already, still no action? Is it because they've been binded by MS contract or something that the public have no idea of? Or there is some secret behind, a big plan going on, and this was all going according to their plan? As long as the top people still get their $$$, and it doesn't matter who got laid off? And the end result is something that we will only see later?
Don't know, it's just VERY WEIRD or maybe I influenced too much by MGS.

Yeah VERY UGLY. I won't be surprised to see QT on the sale list next. They have dug such a big hole now I don't see how they ever going to get out. Every good plan with great potential gets axed & we end up with now a plan that reads like this: Lumia & S40. WTH Nokia?

Let's see if they even SURVIVE till end of this year......
*
If they think there is ONE OS to RULE them all, then they're very wrong. Even the almighty iOS can't do it and have to face though competition from Android. Android can't rule them all as well.

Nokia should've gone multi-platform, should tap into every market and get their customers. As a plus, they have Symbian and MeeGo OS, they could easily uphold their No. 1 spot and be far in front. Their major lost is the Symbian customers jumping over to Androids (specifically Samseng, which make Samseng No. 1 today). Even just among my friends, most of them are Samseng users now, and most (if not all) were once Nokia users (not to mentioned many of them didn't like Samseng before). Even iPhone didn't make such impact.

I wouldn't put too much hope in this tbh. But hey, this is one of the things that I'll be gladly proven wrong laugh.gif

Wow, too much gloom and doom regarding MS and Nokia partnership here. To me, this partnership is more like a long marathon. The prospects of a single ecosystem (Windows 8+ Windows Phone 8+ Xbox), with them as one of the premier partner is really, really droolworthy. If Nokia can survive this harsh times, I'm sure they can claw their way back to profitability. But becoming the biggest manufacturer again? Tough luck, they wont.

Although tbh, its really sad to see the old Nokia goes away just like that, in matter of years.
/Goes back fondling my N8, N9 and N810.
*
Single ecosystem sounds powerful, but I wonder how many people appreciate and needs it.
It still comes back to the smartphone OS, if they don't fix the restrictions and limitations, it WILL fail. It's just a simple thing, it's just a matter of simple management decisions OR those management need to get out of their comfort chair, stop looking at statistics or reports, come and understand what user wants and what is the problem with their OS.

They motto of Windows Phone is "Putting People First". I don't see how if reflects on the product; It's more like putting themselves first.

As for Nokia:
What I'm wondering is, can those Nokia dealers survive relying on Lumia which I believe their sales is much more worst than Symbians. Not everyone can stand and live with the restrictions and limitations, some may "TRY" to accept it, but as they use it, they will feel the inconvenience (or embarass); hence why there're quite a number of people selling off their Lumias. Now, many people may still have no idea and may buy it, but later what will happen? Can the dealer rely on Lumia sales?

It seems there's no Nokia Store in Setia City Mall, which is unusual. I believe if these dealers voice out to Nokia directly, it'll be a powerful voice and may get more attention.

Windows Phone path is brutally killing Nokia; Unless Windows Phone 8 has big changes and removes most (if not all) of those limitations and restrictions... but, I think it's rather low chance from the way they do things.

Can't argue with the limitations. I used Windows Phone extensively, and compared with my One X running Android, and N9 running Meego, its really limited. Its multitasking limited, its online capability limited, its media management limited, and dont get me started on the file system, its virtually non existent.

For now, I think Windows Phone will only cater to a small, a very small niche, those who priotize fluidity and smoothness, plus those that can tolerate its glaring limitation. I also agrees that the only way to make the OS more interesting to customers is to open up the OS more. Put all the features that we love from Symbian days into the OS, and I'm sure that there are still hope for Nokia.

Which I doubt will be implemented in WP8. Oh, I just dont want it to be overhyped, like how Mango is before. laugh.gif

Now now, I'm having a chance to grab my dream phone of all time, you know, that one particular phone exclusive for Qt developers alone, that N9 with *cough*hardwarekeyboard*cough*
I'll let your guys imagination to run wild here laugh.gif
*
Those are one technical limitations.
What's worst is the limitation for even end users, such as, poor contacts management (proper support for multiple mobile?), Market limitation (bind to region, this is very annoying, it's worst than Apple; Why do they need to be so strict? Unless there's legal law for specific apps for specific country, why is there need to differentiate? It also makes them harder to maintain, harder to distribute, harder to update, harder to release, etc. It's just plain stewpid, I'm sorry to say this again, plain stewpid, waste their time, make end users suffer and question why or feeling indifferent, in short, it's BAD BAD BAD). Hearing from people with lots of experience with Apple and Windows Phone, it's sad to know how much more restricted Windows Phone is (or how much more stewpid it is, if Apple isn't already stewpid).

If Windows Phone were to be successful and to even be able to show up as a competitor, there's A LOT of things it needs to improve, limitations and restrictions removed.....
Smoothness and Fluidity is not everything... others can do it too one day, yet they're providing much more stuffs.

Oh, not to mention Windows Phone apps/games are usually much more expensive.

Now ask majority people out there, Nokia or Samseng.
Nokia already tarnish their image through all these. It's hard to "recover" especially when you have hurt and pissed people off (e.g. those switch from Nokia Symbian to Samseng; those currently using Nokia WP7.5)

L900 release date is bad timing, just when they going to announce WP8 and to announce it won't be available as an update.

It's like MS totally care less about Nokia condition. Well, they don't have to care anyway, they still have other players. They just need Nokia to help them sell their WP7 devices and to promote WP until they're ready with WP8.

Actually this is something I expected after the recent press conference where they fired 10,000 ppl. The 1st thing they mentioned was aligning to a new core service structure in mapping solutions. The only thing that could have meant is they become a huge mapping provider.

Instead of thinking negative on this, there is some positive. Nokia has basically tied themselves to Windows 8 platform. I'm very sure this agreement will mean for every Windows OS sold in phone, tablet or PC, they will be paid for their maps being used. How much or how are they paid, up to us to imagine.

Negative of course is now Nokia is just like any other OEM WP phone maker. I do wonder how does Samsung feel though, when they release their WP8 phone, they have to stick Nokia Drive in there.  laugh.gif

Some positive but more bad news for Nokia. Paid or not paid, it could also be under their agreement contract already, or worst yet, Microsoft may just acquire it later and you may see the brand new name 'Microsoft Maps with FREE turn by turn navigation'; By using this, they can compete with Google.

I don't think Samseng need to worry or anything? Do they have their own Samseng maps?
Their brand and device is getting more popular in Asia especially. In US or Europe, probably they would prefer US or Euro brand (though, there're those that already hated Nokia due to all the disappointment; One important thing to know is that, it's very hard to recover and gain back people's confidence and trust, so it's very important not to disappoint and hurt the customers.
