Why do you need impact when screwing in?
*
Impact Driver actually can help you to screw in a screw faster especially in hard wood and steel.

The impact drive act like a hammer hammering the screwdriver to turn the screw in. During screwing screw in hard wood, we normally face the the philips screw head worn and we need to use plier to take it out. Sometime , harder wood will make the screw head break in to two parts. If you use impact driver then really seldom have this kind of problem anymore.

Just to share my new toy Bosch GDR10.8.

Bosch GDR10.8V really best " screwdriver " I had. I bought it since last year July and it was my daily tools. This model is Generation Two already and this tools made in Malaysia and we should support Malaysia Product . Haha

It really small in size, light in weight and but once it do it job , it work like charm.

But cons of this tools is it only comes with one battery.

Thanks for the suggestion. That is 'self tapping screw', which creates screw thread when we driving it into a pre-drilled hole. THe drilled hole should be a bit smaller than the screw size. Normally a thread maker tool needed to make the thread, but this self tapping screw can be used without using that thool.

I hope I can find few of it in hardware shop. I don't have steel bars, but, I think it can use is to attach something to somthing in future.
Thank you. smile.gif

I have a lot of self tapping screw and it most common used in steel. Last time , we need to use drill bit to drill a hole and then just screw it .

Any one want me to show how it work ? I also have other tools to show, anyone want to see ?

yeah mine is gdr10.8 mk2 and its made in malaysia. only come with one batt tho but i think is sufficient for diy users. now i am looking for their driver heads. anyone try kennedy brand before here???
*
Ya, one battery sufficient for DIY, but sometime you need the job done in quickly and urgent, I don't think one battery is sufficient. Because you need to wait the battery fully charged in 30 minutes, but really fast compared to
older technology, NiCa which need more than 1 hours

You mean this type of chuck ( 1/4" Chuck ) :

I get the picture from lelong.com.my

Can we use an impact driver for drilling?
I think I saw a special drill kit for use on an impact driver.
Anyone try it?
*
Sure can , but the drill bit a bit difference , it must have 1/4" hex shank because the Bosch Impact Driver only come with 1/4" Chuck. But the drill bit also more expensive compared with normal drill bit , I bought the drill bit before and just few hardware shop selling it.

The 1/4" Shank Drill Bit :

Or you buy 1/4" Hex Shank chuck like what Eng_Tat Mentions.

Brought this set 2year ago for rm290. Model gsr10.8v-liq bosch. Use for screw and drilling till 4mm dia. Bigger drill no torque. It have torque adjustable 1-10 (probably max 10kgf/cm) which good for screw. It come with a torchlight which you can use the drill battery.

Yeah. Like that.
I assume you will be using normal drill bits?

What happens when the impact mechanism kicks in while drilling?
Also will the drill bit hold steady when spinning or will it "wave" about (like the screw bit in bahathir's rotary hammer video above)?
*
If you use the chuck then you can use normal drill bit

If without the chuck , you need to buy special drill bit that designed for 1/4" Hex Chuck.

But the risk , when the drill bit stuck during drilling a steel , impact action will make the drill bit break into two parts because the impact driver will start hammer if got somethings stuck. I think it will create wave or vibration because you already add a big things on the impact driver and it may create more wave or vibration during high speed

Agreed. Impact driver's impact mechanism  gives extra TWIST or torque to spin the bit. Remeber, impact driver torque is much bigger than normal drill driver, and the the chuck's jaw cannot grip the cylindrical shaft's bit. Sometime, this extra torque impulses also can loosen the chuck's too, especially in reverse mode. So sometime, better get separate  specialize tools for greater result. I know, as a DIYs, we have a limited budget, so, getting a good tools which last longer is very important.

In my case, masonry/concrete drilling is a very tough to the tool. You may get 3 in 1, or 4 in 1 cordless impact hammer drill driver, but, really, how much you achive with this tool? the 4 in 1 cordless tool, exmample BTP140,  is very rare in Malaysia, and it may cost you MYR2000 or more. Hey, I bought  Makita HR2810 rotary hammer + Makita TD010F impact driver + Makita GA4030 angular grinder, and it still cost HALF of the Makita BTP140! smile.gif Yeah, sometime conveniences cost more than performance. Yeah, different people, different needs, so up to you to decide which tools are sutable for your need.

Thank you. smile.gif

Ya, for DIYer. Price ( Cheap ) and durablity ( Last Longer ) is more important. For DIYer, most common tools is Rotary Hammer, Screwdriver and Angle Grinder. If you need to screw a lots screws, impact driver is the most suitable.

For me, portability and performance is the most importance because sometime doing small task at outside or on roof or other. Impossible to bring a 10metre to 50metre wire to outside or roof just for drill one hole, that why I bought a Cordless Hammer Drill.

But tools in Malaysia is the way too expensive, if you bought some tools from USA and send it back , it still cheaper than here.
