Cordless Impact Driver vs. Cordless Drill

A debate has been raging in the world of power tools. People are wondering what's better for their needs, a cordless impact driver or a cordless drill. In all honesty, both of these tools have separate advantages and disadvantages and they each certainly have their place. However, when the comparison is performed objectively, it's clear that the cordless impact driver has many advantages over its conventional drill counterpart.

The first place you have to look at when comparing these two power tools is the basic way that each works. A cordless drill works by applying consistent torque, while a cordless impact driver works by delivering increased torque in the form of rapid, high impact blows, to the tune of thousands per minute. This impact system only kicks in when necessary if more torque is needed to continue with a task, before which time it works the same as a standard, albeit more powerful, cordless drill.

The powerful repeated impacts are what end up driving the screw, but unlike hammer drills the hammering is all internal and the bit doesn't have any hammering motion allowing it to maintain contact with the work piece resulting in a powerful driving tool. In fact, impact drivers are renowned for being extraordinarily easy to work with. There is no kickback you have to deal with and you won't need to strain to keep your tool in place. Instead, you can easily hold on with just one hand, letting the tool take care of all of the hard work for you.

With more speed and power, you'll find that there are few things that your impact driver is not up to the task for. You'll be able to easily handle everything from installing ducts and cabinets to building decks and driving screws and fasteners into drywall and concrete. The diversity of the impact driver is where it shines the most when compared with the drill, which is limited in its capabilities.

Another important consideration for both professionals and do-it-yourselfers is battery life. Cordless drills eat up more battery when they require more power and torque. However, cordless impact drivers function from a consistent, even keeled power supply that won't drain the battery to generate more torque. The result is a longer lasting tool that will keep you working at your best as long as you need to be.

It's also essential to look at the physical qualities of each of these two different tools. Cordless impact drivers are significantly smaller than cordless drills. The many inches you save translate into increased flexibility for getting into tight spaces. The smaller size and the different internal mechanisms also mean that your impact driver will be much lighter than your cordless drill.

The light weight will enable you to keep powering through a job for hours on end without needing a break or feeling any discomfort. You'll be able to easily handle and control an impact driver with just one arm, leaving the other arm to support yourself on a ladder or steady a cabinet, for example.

Is There Anything that Makes a Cordless Drill Better than an Impact Driver?

Considering all of the above advantages of cordless impact drivers, you may be wondering if the standard cordless drill still has any place in your toolbox. One thing you may want to consider is where and when you will be performing your work. Cordless impact drivers are by nature very loud, and if you're working on the weekend around the home and are just fixing small odds and ends from time to time, it may be a tradeoff you're not ready to make.

Additionally, cordless drills maintain a finer touch than their more powerful cousins. If you don't need any heavy duty tasks completed, and speed isn't a concern because you only need to make a few occasional repairs, then the finer touch and control of a cordless drill may be your preference.

Cordless Impact Drivers vs. Cordless Drills – Who Wins?

For the majority of people, a cordless impact driver will be able to handle everything that their old cordless drill could do. In addition, you'll be opening up the doors to a variety of new tasks that you can complete and take care of with ease. With more speed and more power, all bundled into a package that’s smaller and lighter than the average drill, your cordless impact driver will soon become your new best friend.

Hi tyja, I got those near my house. it comes in a set of 3 sizes as per photo, 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2" (up right one) its around 15-20 if not mistaken. this is normal unbranded one. if thouse branded one i think is quite expensive.

today i when to oxygen, for me their things are quite expensive for sata products, bought 2 flex head from them just to test the prices there, long shot story but felt like kena parang the price. Also i enquire bosch items which end up the quote price is 5-10 higher than the place i get. not sure for makita tho. but the price you get is quite resonable la.

if any one know where to get toptul products (other then wellmac) do let me know as well.

Jeffreylam, SATA tools not all item are lifetime warranty like bits.
Also bro how much is the torsion bits, would love to get them all as well.

Jinxxx, if you can source for cheaper SATA tools, i think its not that expensive. SATA tools, price compare to last 3 years have increase very significant already. so need to go to old shop thats have old stock. recently bought a set of SATA impact socket for rm110, whereelse other are selling rm185-220 which i think is very ridiculously expensive.

Other much more expensive tool brand like Elora and Snap on the price lagi heart attack tongue.gif

Also any one know where i can get wolfcraft products? can be in kl also.

next few week going to purchase some power tool again tongue.gif

Added on April 17, 2012, 4:29 pmBro what is your budget like??? As price can diffrentiate alot like the  Bosch Cordless Impact Drill GSB 14.4-2 Li can drill up to 10mm in masonry for rm550 or Bosch Cordless Rotary Hammer 2 Modes 36V GBH36V-Li Compact rm1.9k can drill up to 18mm holes in masonry tongue.gif

Eng_Tat, I do agree with you about not all items are covered with warranty but their lifetime warranty covers up to 85% of their products. The question I was referring to you were the flex head you have enquired. It is under lifetime warranty coverage (Of course if you are using with right application, not hammering on material ) For more information, you can visit Sata showroom at Jasakita Jln Segambut.

Regarding the torsion bit, you may pm me for details.

Yup with latest brushless technology, your battery will last longer per charge due to less friction without carbon brush. Because of this, less heat generated therefore pro long your tool life and durability. With latest brushless technology, you will get more screwing per charge, maintenance free, and higher durability.

Hmm, perhaps jumpstat can open new topic for Woodworking =]

Jeffreylam,
I am just a hobbyist whereby my tools are used mainly limited to home furniture, equipment and RC stuff. So a compact cordless with adequate battery power would be more appropriate. Currently I have the Dewalt DCD710, and I dont need any more power as 12v range can fulfill are my requiremnts. With all the comments that i have read with regards to impact drivers, I think this tools would greatly compliment the drill driver. My last project was actually making some outdoor garden benches, it was a hassle to change bits on the drill driver, as i drill pilot holes before fastening works.
Furthermore I was thinking it woukd be logical and more appropriate if just stick to a brand as I can then share its common accessories.
However, Dewalt stuff don't come cheap, that is why I am also looking at other brands for comparison etc.

Well, its true to understand your requirement before making tool selection. Some people tend to ask whats the best tool ever, but I'd really advise them whats the best tool to suit their work requirement. Understanding your work loads and requirement are crucial instead of selecting expensive premium power tools which result higher cost in the end. I have post Makita impact driver ranges which requested and ranging from 10.8V to 18V for selection. Of course, at the end its up to you to decide upon your work requirement that best suits you.

Makita Li-Ion line ups 10.8 / 14.4V / 18V / 36V, 14.4V is more into industry application. If you would like to choose Cordless Driver Drill, we have BDF452RHE which almost similiar with DCD710. Just that its a 18V 1.5Ah Li-Ion battery and of course with our smart charging system, our charging time only required 15mins. You may refer to the catalogue for self-explantory.
