Sorry to barge in this specific asus model thread.

Just to ask for opinion from you guys. I owned an Asus S56CM ultrabook for about 2 years when lately my laptop starts to behave weirdly. It can't shut down properly. The screen went black/blank as it was shutting down but the LED lights/cooling fan still running and will running till the battery exhausted or i push the power button for 3 seconds (force shutdown). Moreover, all the USB port cannot be used unless i insert the USB drive/external HD right before i switch on the laptop.

I received error message from windows "Windows detected a hard disk problem. The following hard disks are reporting failure: SanDisk SSD i1200 24GB" which when i tried to access in the device manager will just made the explorer/windows not responding. From what i read, the SSD is not for storage but rather some speed-up technology/express cache or something like that for faster boot and shutdown.

Is the SSD failure is the root of all my problems? Is there any chance for it to be fixed as i am aware the SSD was not manufactured anymore. Thank in advance.

1st thing 1st, start backing up your files. ASAP.
(hard disk problem being reported is very very bad for hybrid ssd/SSD, as u may not boot into the hhd ever)

then u can start the diagnostics below.

try shutting down and booting up without battery inserted.
if things are normal, then your battery failure; just replace.

if u boot up and get  any error such as memdump or temp related,
and the battery removal did not work,
time to change to full SSD perhaps.
truth be told, 24GB cache is not a lot and who know if it's mlc or slc type or worse tlc type.
if TLC then i guess the error is prone to come very soon.
If you download a lot of ' 'content' ' for the last 2 years, then this is highly likely the case.
i suggest getting a 250gb ssd or at least 500gb ssd if so.

I would say the hybrid ssd is most likely the cause as when shutting down, the memory cannot dump and keeps trying hence not shutting down. moreover, u forcing it to shut could cause some corruption within the drive system files. so more and more error will prompt up.

If changing hhd/ssd did not work, then it could be bios update needed.
maybe some update u recently got can't match the current bios.
proceed with caution as flashing wrong bios will rekt ur motherboard and your whole laptop.

a) Though the SSD is the one which corrupt, will it infect/starts giving problem to the normal HDD?

b) Will try to shutdown and boot without the battery. The boot is fine BTW but takes around 3-5 minutes. hehe

c) i have never stumble upon any error as you mentioned. However, i did download a lot. How is this can contribute to the SSD failure? I already updated the bios to the latest (BIOS 209 for this model).

Thanks for your advice sir.

correct me if i'm wrong.
i did all this research long when i was choosing hybrid and ssd.
SSD sill best esp MLC/slc hardware.
newer hybrid is much better than your older hybrids.

I've a very limited understanding of the technology but i understand your point. LOL.. Thanks mate. Will try to check on the SSD.
