Then on the town accepted a quest to kill penguins and got owned big time by the ufo.

if you hadn't found out already, the place where you accepted the kill-penguins quest (kill dreadwing) is underground to the outpost. Go back up until you have a line of sight to your spaceship, meaning you are not under a shelter. this works if and only if your spaceship is at your base.
