The Backstage emulates the sound, high output, warmth and "push back" of tube amplifiers and includes features such as high and low EQ controls, a 6 inch heavy-duty speaker, switchable TransTube® overdrive, a tape/CD input for jamming along to your favorite songs and a headphone input for doing so quietly. Guitar Player reviewer Barry Cleveland raves about the tone and value of the Backstage in his March 2004 hands-on product review. "This is easily one of the best-sounding mini amps I've ever heard," he writes. "It delivers a great assortment of tube-like tones and offers excellent dynamic response, all in a pint-sized package and for a very modest price."The key is Peavey's exclusive TransTube technology, which emulates the sound of tube amplifiers without the hassle or cost of dealing with unpredictable tubes. The TransTube preamp tailors the gain level for any amount of drive, from clean to crunch to scream, using a patented approach to emulating 12AX7 tubes and their ability to create even, harmonic distortion. It also mimics the "push back" response of real tube circuitry, which is essential to emulating tube dynamics, distortion and chime.

4) Peavey Solo®

The basic building blocks of the TransTube sound are the exclusive designs of the preamp and power amp. The preamp section tailors gain to meet the need for any amount of drive, from crystal clear to thick, smooth sustain. The power amp reacts just like a tube output section by responding to the preamp with natural compression that increases as the amp gets louder. With TransTube, you get a killer amp with wide ranging dynamics and natural "grit," just like a tube amp!

- TransTube tube emulation circuitry

5) Peavey Rage-158

The amp is good for bluesy sounds. 2 channels, clean and lead; lead has pre and post gain knobs. The volume on this thing is actually pretty good.
Features:
This is a simple little practice amp: 2 channels, clean and lead; lead has pre and post gain knobs. The volume on this thing is actually pretty good (for a 15W amp). Switching is done with a knife-switch type thing--no footswitching. There is a headphone jack and a CD/tape input--both work fine. The EQ has two modes: "Modern" and "Vintage". These, too, are controlled with a physical switch. The Vintage has a little more treble, a little more twang. The Modern is a little cleaner, closer to a pure tone. I use Vintage for blues/jazz, and the Modern for open chords, any type of distortion, and for a simpler sound with single coils.
Sound:
Between the 3 EQ knobs, the pre-gain control, and the vintage/modern switching (which is subtle), there is a pretty good variety of sounds you can get out of this amp. My only complaint regarding the distortion is that at REALLY high distortion--pre gain pretty much all the way up--it basically sounds like static. However, as long as you're not playing really weird stuff like Rage or Disturbed, you should be able to get enough distortion.
Any noise I hear from this amp is from a guitar or a cable--when I use my Monster cable and a humbucker, there is no noise.
Unfortunately, it tends to buzz a little at low pitches at medium to high volumes, but if you turn it up this much it hurts your ears anyway!
