QUOTE(y_owez @ Nov 3 2012, 08:57 PM) thanks so much! Regarding purchasing electronics - please stick to shops that openly display a price when buying items such as cameras.we just want to try things that are special in HK definitely will try the polo bun , egg tart in macau, and wifey biscuit... cant wait to visit LKF how's the electronic there? cheaper in malaysia or? are the stuff there cheap? or they try to con tourists? still havent decided on hotels..probably want area kowloon? 3 ppl , so need to add extra bed? Cosmo hotel has air suite room for 3 ppl, 1 queen and sofa bed.. very tempting but about 200 aud ... exp la..... and will try let us like check out ( cause want to go macau 1 day/1 night ) then go check in again? does that mean have to carry ALL luggage around or can leave in the HK hotel? First time I went, wanted to buy a camera for my mum as it was cheaper than UK at the time (HK no sales tax like UK..) anyway I already knew the model I wanted and how much it should be. The sales guy tried to sell me another camera for the same price (although it was only worth half) and changed the settings on the camera I wanted to buy to make the picture quality look terrible compared to the cheap one .. luckily I knew what I wanted otherwise I might have fallen for it. Second time I bought another camera - they tried to sell me the accessories that are meant to come with it separately So best thing to do is stick to the retail chains such as Fortress etc. who openly display prices and won't try to rip you off. Malaysia doesn't have sales tax either on electronics so I don't think the prices will be much cheaper in HK anyway. Leaving luggage in Hotel until the next day shouldn't be an issue - I've done this before. Worst case you could leave it at one of the train stations (last time left mine at Hong Kong station) but I think they charge by the hour so can get expensive. Just did it that time as I had some hours to kill and didn't want to take a huge suitcase around with me all day. Hotel I used to always stay at Langham place - used to be about 700HKD per night that time but I think now the prices have gone up already. These days I go for work and stay in Shen Zhen where you get more hotel for your money ... then just go HK for day trip if no work related things to do This post has been edited by rjb123: Nov 4 2012, 11:18 AM |

QUOTE(y_owez @ Nov 4 2012, 02:12 PM) wah...thanks for the advise.. i'll prob just browse at big shops or back in KL then..somemore we all banana Train station is not lockers, you bring trolley with luggage and they give you tags like a hotel would but charge you per pc, I don't remember the charge but was quite expensive. According to MTR website : even easier to get conned train station - how big are the lockers? or is like office place thing? will that into consideration.. Langham.. i think is bit pricey now? hoping around RM400 ( 120+ AUD) for 3 of us and i know its hard to get 3 bed cause the hotel rooms are small...looking around MTR near kowloon oooo..what is won zai chi and where? so i can put in the itinerary like our fellow member suggestd QUOTE Charge -Up to 3 hours: HK$40 per item -Over 3-24 hours: HK$55 per item -Over 24-48 hours: HK$130 per item -Each subsequent 24-hour period or part thereof: Additional HK$80 per item You'd probably be best leaving at the hotel , I couldn't as I didn't have a hotel in HK at the time. Just checked Asiarooms, Langham is showing now as 800+ per night Added on November 4, 2012, 3:39 pm QUOTE(h9s9h @ Nov 4 2012, 02:27 PM) which telco company is recommended for 3g service in hk?? any unlimited 3g usage plan available?? please advise. thx I used 3 SIM Card last time for data, see here for details on charges. QUOTE(straw @ Nov 4 2012, 04:11 PM) rjb123 : Regal iClub and he managed to get for RM250 ? Yes, was RM250.checked agoda standard also rm700 after discount. It was done via Expedia (UK site, he was visiting from UK) I met my colleague at HK airport around 4-5PM and was booked for the same night there online - so very much last minute - maybe the prices drop last minute if they have availability? This was on 9th Oct FYI Edit : Think there's been a confusion somewhere, I remember him telling me was RM250, but I just checked the transaction on the bank and it was actually GBP 115 = RM 575. QUOTE(y_owez @ Nov 5 2012, 12:49 PM) in HK, how accessible are free WIFI? There's quite a lot of free Wifi around, if you start to roam on a certain network you will actually get an SMS with a code for free public Wifi for 24 hours ... I can't remember what network this is provided now.if i were to get a HK sim card, I would be able to use my phone as a hotspot for my laptop right? Do they sell nano simcard? Not sure about nano sim, but HK is quite up to date so I wouldn't worry about it - if they only have normal SIM can also cut down for you |

QUOTE(speechless48 @ Mar 15 2013, 03:16 AM) Hi all. Upon arrival at HK airport (in the afternoon), i wish to go to ShenZhen. I normally do this, never had a problem with luggage size, even when having pretty big bags ...Any suggestions on the fastest and most pocket-friendly way to get to SZ? I read that there is an A43 bus from the airport to Sheung Shui Station (1 station away to Lo Hu). However I am worried about my luggage. It is some sort of 28 inches.... As i read from the bus company's website, "Every passenger can carry one free luggage with size not exceeding 71"x56"x26" " Are they strict on this? Has anyone experienced this before? Thanks. You can take a ferry direct from HKIA to Shekou ferry terminal also , this should be quicker. By train is good but you'd need to take the airport express into town then change onto other trains , bit more hassle than a bus from the airport. Now my question I'm arriving at HKIA at 11PM next Saturday and need to go to SZ - too late for ferry, and Lo Wu border crossing closes at midnight, no chance I'll make it after immigration / waiting for baggage etc. Anyone have any experience using the Lok Ma Chau 24 Hr crossing? I'll need to get a taxi there also as SZ Metro would have stopped already - I'm staying in the Huaquiang area (5 stops from Lo Wu on metro...) I hate taxis in China (don't speak a word of chinese, drivers always asking questions etc |

QUOTE(bearbear @ Mar 8 2013, 09:38 AM) From what i know nop - you have to get your visa ready upon arrival. FYI, there's a little known visa booth upstairs on the HK side issuing same day China visas for approx RMB 500Just go for the express - pay for it. Get it approved within a day. So you'd need to fly to HK and get the visa there, I don't use it as normally make sure I have one in advance to avoid the hassle of getting one there |

QUOTE(ISFJ @ Mar 16 2013, 10:51 PM) Hi, I'll be going to HK end of next month for 9D8N. I have booked accommodation for 6N in HK (Oi Suen Guesthouse - anyone stayed there before?), and plan to use the remaining 3D2N in Shenzhen and Guangzhou. I would like to ask if any of you have any recommendations for hotels in Shenzhen and Guangzhou that are easily accessible using public transport since I will be traveling there from HK. In SZ I quite like Fortune Hotel, in Huaquangbei area (5 stops from Lo Wu) - costs 350 RMB / night if booked in advance.Matta Fair isn't of any help in that matter as most of the travel agents only offer tours without any information on the hotels (we prefer to go free and easy without any tours). But I managed to buy Disneyland tickets at RM150 each, hopefully it is a good deal. Thank you very much in advance It's walking distance to all the electronics markets - but I don't know what your reason for visit is of course, so this area might not be interesting for you |

QUOTE(HwangTommy @ Mar 17 2013, 12:49 PM) Hey guys, I'm planning for a travel this summer, and Hong Kong is in one of my destinations. How much do I need to budget for ~10 days backpacking style trip to Hong Kong and Macau? Can't really advise on budget as I usually travel HK on business and always stay in SZ (hotels far cheaper For crossing over to Shenzhen, can I get the visa on arrival? I am Indonesian, btw. I'm planning to cross over to Shenzhen and then take a bus to my ancestry home Swatow (汕头), anyone had experiences on the bus or can I directly take a bus from Hong Kong to Swatow? For China there is a Visa office at Lo Wu border for a same day single entry (I think 5 day only) visa, but it's better to apply the visa in advance in KL Easiest way to enter SZ is via train to Lo Wu then cross there. Can't advise on travel to Swatow, but I'm sure there'll be buses or trains running from SZ> |

QUOTE(HwangTommy @ Mar 17 2013, 01:56 PM) I found AirAsia tickets, so cheap, RM456 for return. I was actually planning to go to South Korea, but I have to apply for a visa and it's a little out of my budget. Is HK more expensive? I guess it is, but just to make sure I asked here Hotels in HK are expensive, otherwise the costs aren't too bad - SZ Hotels are less than half the price.I guess you can find backpacker places which are cheaper to stay than hotels - have a look at http://www.hostelworld.com/ to get an idea |

QUOTE(HwangTommy @ Mar 17 2013, 02:05 PM) Thanks a lot! I'm planning to couch surf actually but can't find anyone to host me, lol. How is the public transport there? On par with Singapore? Public transport in HK is excellent, I don't read/speak a word of Chinese and have no problems getting around at all. I'd say it's probably better than Singapore but have only been to Singapore for a few days so a bit difficult to compare.Just pick up an Octopus card (touch n go / EZ-Link) equivalent, you can top this up at any train station and use it on all trains / buses in HK and even other places like 7-11 or McDonalds to pay for stuff Shen Zhen public transport is also good, I haven't had any problems - they also have a similar card but I never had one of those and just pay per ride |

QUOTE(ISFJ @ Mar 17 2013, 05:50 PM) Thank you very much for your suggestion, will search and see if I can get good deals for the hotel. My visit is mainly for leisure so any interesting areas will be good! As long as a hotel is near a Metro it's all good - easy to get around Currently planning my itinerary, and am lost when it comes to food. I am also lost in China when it comes to food, not being able to read/speak Chinese makes it difficult as not many menus have English and I'm not a fan of McD/KFC etc. I normally get suppliers / customers to take me out to eat , other times just grab some noodles + few cheap Tsing Tao from 7-11 and eat in the hotel BTW, for booking hotels in China I've always found Ctrip to be good ! QUOTE(ISFJ @ Mar 18 2013, 11:37 PM) The hotel that I booked is in Mongkok, nearby the Ladies Street. Hopefully it's a good location! I am unable to read Chinese / speak Cantonese too, have to depend on my boyfriend on that. I have just planned my itinerary until the 4th day of my trip, 6th-9th day pending Mongkok is fine - busy area, lots of places to eat and shop - shouldn't have a problem I got a really cheap deal on AirAsia, RM397 return tickets (including airport tax, service charge, 15kg baggage) for my trip from end of April till early May 2013. Pretty lucky I must say. That RM397 is a great deal, I just paid RM1400 with MAS for a return - but it was booked at short notice |

QUOTE(cute_boboi @ Mar 19 2013, 11:08 AM) I believe HK MTR also stop service. Taxi fare from airport to Lok Ma Chau will be incredible, including the midnight surcharge rate. Thanks, I saw in a flew places that the taxi shouldn't be more than HKD300 or so , apparently there's also night buses running to there (change at Sheung Shui) but seems like a bit of a hassle at that time of the night. I don't really want to camp out in the airport until 5-6 AM, will probably be tired enough as it is. Will make a decision once I arrive, see how I feel, I just think taxi will be the least hassle Just FYI, my previous taxi from airport to Shatin (about your halfway distance) on broad daylight, is HKD400. Be prepared to fork out up to HKD800-1000 for the taxi ride, otherwise, I suggest you camp out at airport until 6am if save cost. Also, I assume you have your China visa ready. Once you cross into SZ Futien, there are a lot of taxis there. About RMB50-100 (midnight rate) can take you to huaqiang area. Some taxi drivers may not know the location / road to use and may ask you back. So, don't blame if taxi takes you round here and there (expensive fare). Metro is just two floors below Lok Ma Chau immigration. MAS got promo. I paid 1.1k recently. Then promo price for this month is about RM800 +/- return ticket. Not being able to speak Chinese the taxis probably will take a longe route either way - but RMB 50-100 seems reasonable enough. I had to book this flight last minute, that's why there wasn't really any special deal available |

Went to the "Travel to mainland" bus counters and nothing available , last bus left 10 minutes before. Met 3 other guys in the same position and we shared a taxi to the Hangguang border which came to HKD 320 in total (80 HKD each) This border full of touts trying to sell their transport, bit annoying! Anyway, other guy insisted he gets taxi with me (Indian, can speak mandarin) and got to Huaquiang hotel for less than RMB20 Quite happy with the outcome, reached hotel at 1:30AM which is earlier than I expected , and didn't cost much. 80 HKD + 20 RMB + 8 HKD for the border bus. |
