It surprise me, when I was in Mongkok about a month ago, Ladies Street, suddenly a girl (definitely tourist) shout out in Cantonese, her wallet is stolen from the backpack behind her. The zip was open.
She was with her partner, and she sounds more like Malaysian.

Anyway, the lesson is, if you carry anything valuables, anywhere in the world, carry it in front of your chest, rather than at the back.

Or leave the valuable things in the hotel safe box and only carry necessary things. Unless hotel room don't have safe box then no choice have to carry as mentioned by cute_boboi smile.gif
*
Those drawer size (with keypad) safe, are not really safe. Do you know the hotel has a master key to open all the safes ?
Also, I recall it runs on batteries (AA/AAA), and there is a button/something at the back, try check it out.

Unless it is an international 4/5 star hotel, I won't use the safe at all.

Also, when travel, please clear out your thick 2-3" wallet. You don't need to bring Jusco, Watson, Bonuslink, etc. cards.
Also, clear out those ATM/credit cards and maybe even driving license if you don't plan to use those.
Only bring 1-2 CC that you will use and keep separately.

Actually, based on a ship shape "V" or hydro-foil "W" pattern, the smallest movement will be at the lowest deck.
A comparison is to look at a metronome, which has a needle swaying left and right, the same movement in a ship (viewed from front) in turbulent water. The higher up the needle, the more distance it move, even though at the same angle.

Also, try sit in the middle of the ship (centre of gravity). Not the windows side.

For my trip to HK last year, my flight was KL - ShenZhen & return...it's really a pain in the a$$ as the MTR trip from Shenzhen airport to border MTR is 45min....then from boarder MTR to Mongkok MTR is another 45 min sweat.gif which makes it a triring trip with all the luggage rclxub.gif
*
My advise is, try not to bundle more than 2x per trip. Each one goes hand in hand.
1) Macau <-> Zhuhai
2) Macau <-> HK
3) HK <-> Shenzhen

4) GZ <-> Zhuhai
5) GZ <-> SZ

You sure SZ airport to LoWu/LokMaChau is only 45 minutes by train ?
I recall even from middle (Window of the World) to HK border also need 30-40 minutes already.

Then, you not yet count how long you stuck at HK immigration, I guess maybe you lucky, the crowd is not big.

Anyway, it can be penny wise, pound foolish. Yes, you may save few hundred RM on the flight ticket to SZ, rather than HK. Is it worth it for the time spent, energy, etc. ? Some may say yes, some no. icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(zstan @ Feb 20 2013, 01:20 PM)
...

Hong Kong itself is really quite a busy city and everybody seems rushing around. It's hard to see any locals taking a stroll on the streets. Then again, it was during working hours when I was around. The buildings are all very well constructed and most of them are linked with each other, which makes life easier for visitors as they don't have to exit the mall to get to another mall. Size wise, everything is very compacted compared to the likes of One Utama or Sunway Pyramid. Personally I don't really enjoy shopping under such cramped conditions. Maybe I'm just used to the big open spaces in Malaysia's own shopping malls. :/ Nevertheless, shopping in Hong Kong is still a tad cheaper due to its duty free status compared to the Malaysia and that's probably why many flock here for this sole reason.

...
*
Life in HK moves at fast pace. They walk fast, talk fast, eat fast (no lepak and chit chat during peak eating hours). Escalator also moves faster.

To compare, life in SG is a bit slower than HK. Escalator also slower a bit.

And to compare M'sia, we move even slower than SG. Coming back to KLCC, the escalator is like ... tortoise yawn.gif

Rental space in some HK areas are very expensive, if not the most expensive in the world. Hence all are cramped, narrow, small shops, etc. Everything have to move fast, to generate sales/profit to cover their cost.

It's quite common to add HKD2 for ice.

Also, if you need to tapao leftover food in dine-in restaurant, the white polystyrene box will cost HKD1-2 for small and HKD2-3 for big.

Seriously, not really.
I think over-rated a bit. Just that over here in M'sia, we put too much sugar and the sweetness cover off the tea/coffee/milk taste.

QUOTE(katejing @ Feb 23 2013, 03:22 PM)
I'm going to hong kong. Done some researches and wish to reclarify with ur guys here..

1. Via Lo Hu from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, can the china visa be made upstairs? Anything have to be noticed when passing the custom?
2. Octopus card's deposit is refundable with the return card? or non-refundable?
3. If i arrange the last second day to visit lantau island and then stay at there so that the next day I can go to the airport within nearer distance, is it okay?
4. I allocate one day for all kind of streets (eg. goldfish, stanley, flower etc) and temple (tin hou, ten buddha), will it be too rush?
5. Got any ferry directly from macau to lamma island? or have to back to hong kong first then go to lamma?
6. Got any night bus to disneyland to enjoy the firework?

Ermmm...temporarily those questions..thanks thanks.. =D
*
1. Yes, can be made at Lo Wu. Depends on queue if long or not, may waste valuable time, instead of visiting places. Imagine IF you need to queue 2 hours there, you can already cross over and eat/shop/visit places for the valuable 2 hours.
Better to apply at Plaza OSK, KL (opposite Citibank) before go.

2. Yes, refundable. But if return Octopus card within 1-3 months, I recall got some extra penalty charges under T&C, about HKD10-20.

3. Check properly on available public transport MTR/bus/taxi/ferry.

4. Group the streets together. Stanley = south of HK island, visit other places there also.
Flower street, gold fish, sports shoe, temple street, ladies street, etc. are all within Jordan, Yau Ma Tei, Mongkok, Prince Edward MTR area = this can be done in 1 day. Or if you shop REALLY slow, then 2 days.

5. Not sure. Can't help.

6. Not sure. Can't help.

i would like to ask. can i purchase the MTR airport travel pass at the airport, than use it to travel from airport to yau ma tei station? if yes, can i use it again when i want to back to airport?tq
*
Got several version of Airport Express tickets here.

The most similiar will be Airport Express Travel Pass which costs HKD300 for return-trip, as well as 3 consecutive days for free MTR (except Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau, and few more, read the link)

A round trip airport express will cost HKD180, which means the HKD120 is for the 3 days MTR. If you plan to return the card at airport, the cost is 120-50 = HKD70 for 3 days MTR.
QUOTE
The Pass may be kept as a souvenir after use or it may be returned to any MTR or Airport Express Customer Service Centre for a refund of the remaining stored value (if applicable)3. In addition, MTR will return HK$50.

I use the 3 consecutive days for far-away travel, such as Tung Chung, Sheung Shui/Fanling (go out of ticketing, come in, get on another train, before proceed to Lo Wu/Lok Ma Chau-Futien, make sure got sufficient balance inside for manual fare journey), Yuen Long (if you want tongue.gif )

But this Airport Express Travel Pass goes all the way to Central, HK.
For your case at Yau Ma Tei, you may want to get down at Kowloon (return trip HKD160 only), which is nearer.

Pro of this ticket is, no penalty like Octopus if cancel/return within 1-3 months (forgot exact T&C).

Just to add, you do the math and see which is more worth it. Remember standard Octopus card has penalty if return less than (1-3) months.
To me, HKD70 for 3 days MTR, that's HKD23.33/day icon_rolleyes.gif Can go Snoopy park at Shatin also (don't get disappointed, it's incredibly small doh.gif but I think worth to go tongue.gif )

With 3 consecutive days free, even if you get down at Central, you can take the MTR to Admiralty (1 stop), change train and 3-4 stops to reach Yau Ma Tei.
Remember to reload (and use as normal Octopus card) after 3 days. I manage to use free on 4th day early morning MTR to Central, check in, airport-express to HKIA, goto refund counter, and they give me back full amount without the earlier morning ride tongue.gif Seems like their ticketing system, is not THAT real-time. whistling.gif

I will be at hk for 4days 3 nights, like that I think will be sufficient. One more questions are, I can seat unlimited ride for three days. Just airport I can go once? Can I use this card to go to Disneyland station?
*
Airport Express Travel Pass - got two type: single/return ride. Get the return ride (the one I mention above for HKD300 + 3 days MTR). Yes, can ride MTR to Disney, but I cannot recall if need to pay for the Disney-MTR, just ask when you buy.
Unlimited MTR, but certain conditions (read the website link I posted above), such as no 1st class on KCR, cannot goto Lo Wu / Lok Ma Chau, etc.

On your 4th day, you may still need to top-up/pay for the MTR ride.

Note: If you just use the airport express on first day, and none MTR ride, your 3 consecutive days can start from 2nd day onwards until your 4th day there.
Sometimes I do that also, start the consecutive 3 days ride on 2nd day.

QUOTE(katejing @ Feb 25 2013, 10:52 PM)
Can i get the airport travel pass in normal mrt station too? =)
*
Not sure, normally I purchase return ticket at HKIA (airport) once come out of Customs.
Outside the arrival hall area, also has a counter.

Now my question biggrin.gif

I'm arriving at HKIA at 11PM next Saturday and need to go to SZ - too late for ferry, and Lo Wu border crossing closes at midnight, no chance I'll make it after immigration / waiting for baggage etc.

Anyone have any experience using the Lok Ma Chau 24 Hr crossing? I'll need to get a taxi there also as SZ Metro would have stopped already  - I'm staying in the Huaquiang area (5 stops from Lo Wu on metro...) I hate taxis in China (don't speak a word of chinese, drivers always asking questions etc  tongue.gif )
*
I believe HK MTR also stop service. Taxi fare from airport to Lok Ma Chau will be incredible, including the midnight surcharge rate.
Just FYI, my previous taxi from airport to Shatin (about your halfway distance) on broad daylight, is HKD400. Be prepared to fork out up to HKD800-1000 for the taxi ride, otherwise, I suggest you camp out at airport until 6am if save cost.

Also, I assume you have your China visa ready. Once you cross into SZ Futien, there are a lot of taxis there. About RMB50-100 (midnight rate) can take you to huaqiang area. Some taxi drivers may not know the location / road to use and may ask you back. So, don't blame if taxi takes you round here and there (expensive fare).

Metro is just two floors below Lok Ma Chau immigration.

QUOTE(rjb123 @ Mar 18 2013, 11:47 PM)
Mongkok is fine - busy area, lots of places to eat and shop - shouldn't have a problem smile.gif

That RM397 is a great deal, I just paid RM1400 with MAS for a return - but it was booked at short notice  blush.gif
*
MAS got promo. I paid 1.1k recently. Then promo price for this month is about RM800 +/- return ticket.

i got some q .. im going to HK in may..
and expect some more q's for me later oso.. tongue.gif

1) in ocean park got halal restaurant onot ?
2) whats the estimate time if i want to go wandering around ngongping + the cable car ride?
*
1) I don't think so. You can bring in lots of mineral water bottles. Inside sell at HKD20 per 500-700ml bottles. Cheapest water bottles I found on the street (sell by traditional chinese medicine shops) are 6 bottles 700ml for HKD10.
Food, I suggest eat heavy breakfast, then bring breads/sandwiches/etc. for late lunch 3pm. It takes me full-day there, we reach and went in before 11am. Come out about 8pm. Then go back out for dinner/supper.

Take the early bus #629 from Admiralty MTR here. You can buy entrance ticket here as well, or buy from promo websites/hotel/tour agency.

2) Go during weekdays. Weekends will be crazy queue, like my friend who went there last weekend, cable car go up queue 2 hrs. Come down queue 1.5 hrs. Go figure rclxub.gif

Same with Ocean Park, Disney, V.Peak, etc. where you need to queue ... go on WEEKDAYS.
Weekends keep for non-queue areas like shopping.

Just an update on this

Arrived at 11PM , cleared through customs / immigration / baggage claim by midnight - too late for any trains to Lo Wu etc obviously.

Went to the "Travel to mainland" bus counters and nothing available , last bus left 10 minutes before. Met 3 other guys in the same position and we shared a taxi to the Hangguang border which came to HKD 320 in total (80 HKD each)

This border full of touts trying to sell their transport, bit annoying! Anyway, other guy insisted he gets taxi with me (Indian, can speak mandarin) and got to Huaquiang hotel for less than RMB20

Quite happy with the outcome, reached hotel at 1:30AM which is earlier than I expected , and didn't cost much. 80 HKD + 20 RMB + 8 HKD for the border bus.
*
That's considered cheap for sharing.

Oh, check out CTMA centre also for figurines. It's at a dead end shop upstairs (forgot which level 2/3/4), quite narrow and cramp, so make sure you check every corner.
Other places have also, but just one/few shops here and there. May/may not worth to go all the way.

Yes, massive people but just queue accordingly and will do. Sometimes the bus conductor at bus stops will ask passengers to cut queue (willing to stand) and just board the bus.

I left about 7:30pm-8pm (sky dark already).
Queued and boarded the bus within 10-15 minutes. Don't worry, a lot of buses and very efficient and fast HK style & speed.
Just use Octopus card.

Ocean's park is big. I'm not sure you adults only or bring kids along.
Try to be there before it opens at 10am. Means you depart hotel 8am-9am depending where you stay.
You can bring lots of water bottles in as well, inside sell expensive.
Try take the cable car over first, else queue maybe long and waste 30-60 minutes to queue later.

We arrive before 11am, and play till 7pm when they stop some of the rides.
Then slowly make way to cable car and to the entrance/exit at 8pm.

It's very tiring ...

RM500 include/exclude hotel ? Or RM500 is for food/drinks/entrance fee/transportation only ?

Ocean park itself is already HKD280/RM112 for entrance, not yet count transport/food.

Not yet count if you want to try snacks or dessert or drinks , easily food itself, minimum RM250-300 gone.
