I started working as a young graduate electrical engineer in 1983 in an engineering firm in Kuala Lumpur. My starting salary was RM1200 which was pretty typical in those days.

Present day graduates start their working life at RM1800 to RM2000 a month, not a lot of difference from 25 years ago but prices of everything have tripled and quadrupled.

not bad

but he forgets that back then how many people were graduates back then?

nowadays with so many colleges around, anyone can have a degree . the numbers of graduates has been tenfold or more? based on percentage of population of course

in the end what matters is yourself , degree nowadays is nothing more than just a "minimum requirement for a employment" equivalent to what SPM were back then

best example , in 1969 with SPM you get to become officer straight away (inspector)

in time..you need diploma to be Inspector , degree will make u become ASP

nowadays you need SPM (credit BM) just to become a private , and degree will only make you inspector

-

its not about how good you are, it is about how much better you are than other people

graduates nowadays consist of a lot of worthless pieces of crap who cant even speak or read english properly.

it bumps me out coz it brought down the image of proper graduates like me.  vmad.gif

another thing what most engineering graduates failed to realize is that

big companies they dont care about your degree, even if u get first class but whats the point? if you scored on all irrelevant subjects laugh.gif

but barely passes all your core subjects

also complaining that you are not paid enough, then find a job that offer u more money

work for phone shops can earn 2k-3k

work in boutiqus can earn 4k-5k

work as mechanic can earn few thousands

work in cybercafe can earn 1k-2k

dont even need degree, heck not even SPM

or you can try to become junior hairstylist,jr makeup artist, malaysians 'beautician' in slimming centers or beauty centers where all you need is just a few weeks training then u may start your job

i like how people can mislead with statistics. inb4 how about we compare how many months' salary does it take to buy a computer in 1983 and 2011.

people only care to prove their agenda laugh.gif

anyway dont forget malaysia population now is 28m compared to only 10m in 1970

so there is less share for every man

hi...i'm new here..but like to add a lil bit...

i started work in 2002 after graduated with 3rd class mechanical eng degree......with salary of 1.5k.....after 10 years with the same company, now i'm getting quite good pay and good position. my opinion below based on my experience and thinking...you can agree or you can disagree with it....

from my work experience, i can say that younger generation ie fresh grads are not patience....most expected to get high pay, ie 3k, 4k per month....even though don't have any experience yet.

my opinion, the 1st 3 years should be your learning years....try to get as much knowledge and experience as you can, then after that, the money will come. some, keep jumping here and there and end up, they don't get the seniority and knowledge but just get the money. Until 1 stage, they stop, at senior exec or just exec......cannot move on to higher position as not enough experience and knowledge....

another thing is financial planning.....for me, it's not how much u earn, but more on how much you spend. ur salary 2k nett. do you need iphone? bb? or just a phone which can call, receive call, sms? it's about what do you need, not what u want. do you need samsung tab? bb palybook? hard truth YOU CANNOT AFFORD THOSE THING IF YOUR SALARY JUST 2k.....but, many youngsters opt to own 1 and even get data plan which cost more money.....

car the same....work 3 months, straight away buy vios, persona, city, etc...why don't buy 2nd hand car or consider other cheaper cars, perodua? proton saga?

F&B.......always go to kopitiam which serve rm6 coffee, rm10 nasi lemak, etc...etc....do you need to go there? cannot choose cheaper option? normal restaurant with rm2 teh tarik or rm5 nasi ayam?

hang out sometimes is ok....but if more than 3 days per week hang out at those expensive place....financial trouble just around the corner.......

for freshies, 1st 3 years is for you to learn how to control and plan ur personal finance.....learn your trade.....so that, when the time come, you'd be prepare.....

my suggestion: try read azizi ali book :millionaires are from different planet, retired rich, etc....
