Sounds like the radiator is rusty... coolant has the anti corrosion property, maybe the radiator is rusty due to long term using water only. Since i have take better care to my car, i guess i will take action soon later. because i still need my car to go anywhere i want.
Besides, do check the engine oil also as either the cooling system not working or your engine is generating extra heat (gasket leakage leak all the lubricant oil away...). Maybe as mentioned, the radiator fan run slower due to aged motor...
