Parent groups have accused Man United of âprofiteering from childrenâs loyaltyâ after they unveiled their fifth home strip in just five years.
The new design by Nike, pictured above, will hit supporters hard in the pocket... and the design has been panned by fans too.
In a move away from the traditional plain red shirts, the new top has an unusual checked print with black lines and a black V neck. Man ÂUnited fan Dave Roberts, 39, said: âThe design is awful. It is like one of those gaudy, revolting shirts from the 1990s. I donât know why they have changed the style away from the plain red shirts.
âIt is nearly as bad as the infamous grey kit. The players wonât be able to see each other in these shirts. They should have kept it simple with the plain red design.
âThey are Âobviously just changing it to make money and get the fans to buy it. But I actually donât think the fans will be Ârushing out to the shops, it wonât go down as a Man United classic.â
It is understood the new kit will be unveiled at the end of May, earlier than the normal launch date because of the Euro 2012 tournament and the Olympics.
But the design has been leaked on to Man United fanzine Red Issueâs website, and is also featured on a YouTube clip which shows the shirt hanging up, along with a blue tartan-print shirt believed to be an away jersey.
Fans have left a string of negative comments about the new strip on the website, describing it as âhorribleâ and âabhorrentâ. One said: âIt looks like a school dinner-ladyâs outfit.â
Man United claim to have Â333million supporters worldwide, with six times as many fans in India than in the UK and a huge army of followers in China and ÂIndonesia. It is estimated the club sells up to 1.5million shirts a year.
And while the coffers at Old Trafford have been boosted by the shirts, pressure grows on families to buy the new kits.
Siobhan Freegard, co-founder of ÂNetmums, told the Sunday Mirror: âWhile itâs normal for clubs to change their kit each year it creates huge problems for parents.
âKids naturally want the newest kit to keep up in the playground, but it adds up to almost ÂŁ100 per child to buy a new home and away top.
âThis is an Âincredible amount of money for any Âfamily to find. But without it kids could feel second best as it creates âhaves and have notsâ according to who can afford it.
âAs itâs always the most loyal fans who buy the kit, clubs should look at reducing the cost of kidsâ tops to the more affordable price of a tenner or less. Anything else is just Âprofiteering from childrenâs loyalty.â
A Premier League charter has stated that replica shirts would be released every two seasons, but in recent years most clubs have ignored this in pursuit of Âprofits.
There was further outrage this week when it emerged the England national strip was being scrapped after being worn in just eight games. While the FA insists money generated from the merchandise is Âre-invested in the game, parents are left counting the cost.
Man United refused to comment.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney had the opportunity to take in an Everton game as he enjoyed a weekend off, watching the Toffees beat Blackpool 2-0, but disappointed some when he left ten minutes before the end.

With the Red Devils having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Liverpool, Rooney decided to spend Saturday watching his boyhood heroes in action.
Everton fans were surprised to see the star take his seat in the stands at a ground where he has endured a hostile reception in recent times.
However, the ex-Toffees forward proved to be something of a lucky charm and the hosts were 2-0 up just six minutes into the fifth round tie.

Royston Drenthe found the target when he was set up by Marouane Fellaini after only 49 seconds, before Denis Stracqualursi netted a tap-in moments later.
Championship Blackpool rarely looked like recovering from the early setbacks and even squandered the chance for a late consolation when Kevin Phillips smashed a penalty into the crowd.
However, Rooney missed the late drama - having made his excuses and chipped off with about ten minutes to go.
He later took to Twitter to express his thanks to the club for allowing him to attend as a fan for the first time since leaving in 2004.
'1st time back at goodison to watch. Great win. Everyone at the club made me feel really welcome. Thank you,' he said.

Everton's success came the day after Rooney's other great sporting love, Leeds Rhinos, beat Manly Sea Eagles 26-12 in rugby league's World Club Challenge.
The Scouser admits it is 'mad' that he supports Rhinos rather than one of the clubs located closer to Merseyside, but that didn't stop him sending a celebratory message.
'Congratulations to the best rugby league team in the world Leeds Rhinos world club champions #worldclubchampions,' he tweeted.
