Dance Central does not have any "online battle mode". Even if there were any, you are basically just challenging your friend's scores. Recently DC2 has a new FB app, which allows you to connect and challenge your scores against other people via FB integration.

I've finished DC2 on easy and you're more than welcome to add my gamertag on xboxlive to compare dance scores. However, my facebook is only for family and friends so I'm very reluctant to add there.

i don't have xbox gold so this FB thing is good enough for score challenging

You don't need gold to access the leaderboards and to compete with your friends on your list.
