SUNGAI PETANI: A businessman from Malacca was charged Tuesday with the 2006 murder of 25-year-old marketing executive Chee Gaik Yap.

Clad in purple-coloured prison clothes, Shahril Jaafar, 31, was calm when the charge was read to him in front of magistrate Raja Shahril Anuar Raja Baniamin.

Shahril, from Pengkalan Jaya, Bukit Kechil in Ayer Keroh, Malacca was charged with murdering Chee between 5.30pm on Jan 14, 2006 and 3.05am on Jan 15, 2006 in the Cinta Sayang Club area.

He was charged with committing the offence under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries death penalty upon conviction.

No plea was recorded from him.

Raja Shahril Anuar fixed March 11 to mention the case, pending the DNA report.

Deputy public prosecutor Lin Cheah Yit prosecuted while Shahril was not represented.

The question in my mind is why the police didn't try to extradite him earlier from Australia?

Malaysia and Australia has an extradition treaty.

Maybe they didn't know where he was? But they could have tried to locate him via Interpol.

Also, he flew in. He should have a Malaysian passport, right? It has been six years; Malaysian passports are valid for 5 years only. So, he must have made a new one some point in time.

If you hold PR of another country you are not eligible for passport of the country. Some countries allow dual-citizenship (meaning you can carry Malaysian passport and the country's passport) - but malaysia does not acknowledge dual citizenship so therefore you'll have to give up your Malaysian citizenship for you to be citizen of another nation

Only Australian citizens can apply for an Australian passport.

QUOTE(yeezai @ Jan 31 2012, 06:08 PM)
he must have renewed his passport at ozzie msia embassy ...but why his name not on interpol list ?

QUOTE(prasys @ Jan 31 2012, 06:51 PM)
If you hold PR of another country you are not eligible for passport of the country. Some countries allow dual-citizenship (meaning you can carry Malaysian passport and the country's passport) - but malaysia does not acknowledge dual citizenship so therefore you'll have to give up your Malaysian citizenship for you to be citizen of another nation

QUOTE
Among the unsolved murders are that of:

Sabah assistant minister Datuk Norjan Khan Bahadar
Fishmonger Anthony Chong Kim Fook
IBM executive Patricia Wong Bao Bao
Boutique owner May Goh Lee Fang
Guest relations officer Noritta Samsudin
14-year-old Chinese national student Xu Jian Huang
Chinese national student Li Mingqian
Chemist Wong Soke Ching
Managing director Jackie Ooi Po Ing
The police have placed these unsolved crimes under the ‘Cold File’ and investigations are just as cold, with no new leads surfacing.
Out of 10 we have only 2 Malays and the rest is Chinese?
Is this saying that police only prioritize Chinese victims or mostly Chinese gets murdered in Malaysia?
I doubt the latter is true as statistically there should be more Malay murders than Chinese murders due to the differences in population.
So why does the police/newspaper only select those cases to report on?

QUOTE
Sepandai-Pandai Tupai Melompat.
Ia tupai berwawasan.

Tiada kejatuhan dicatatkan. Kempen sifar jatuh semasa melompat benar-benar berjaya.

Semakin kuat sorakan, semakin tinggi lambungan.

............

Seluruh penghuni hutan digemparkan. Setiap pelusuk berita disampaikan. Tupai kecil berwawasan mati terjatuh ketika dilambung tinggi meraikan kejayaan. Sekalian tupai di bawah gagal menyambut tupai kecil berwawasan.

Bidalan "Sepandai-pandai tupai melompat, akhirnya jatuh ke tanah jua"

Meteoric rise
By TUNKU SHAHARIAH

One man is turning meteorites into affordable consumer products.

Maverick Malaysian entrepreneur Datuk Jaafar Jamaludin frequently jets between his two homes in Canning Vale, Perth in Australia and Sungai Petani, Kedah.

He flies several times a year at least, but of late, with his meteorite business growing, Jaafer visits his factory cum showroom in Taman Ria, Sungai Petani more regularly. This is where he keeps his rare collection of meteorites and the jewellery made from them.

His wife Datin Norbariah Ibrahim and their four children Rosmina, 31, Zamani, 30, Shahril, 26, and Amirah, 25, help to run the family’s opal business in Canning Vale as well as the meteorite business in Sungai Petani.

The family moved to Perth in 1994 when Jaafar decided to venture abroad to seek the “right business”.

The move proved opportune because he met a group of people who collected fossils, meteorites, and rare gemstones. Jaafar picked up the habit as a result and 10 years later, has his own collection of meteorites of all shapes and sizes from all over the world.

“We turn them into affordable consumer products like jewellery, apparel, car accessories, keris and souvenir,” Jaafar says.

Jaafar says his meteorite jewellery collection range in price from a few hundred ringgit a piece to a few thousand.

They are exclusively designed in Hong Kong and Bangkok.

His meteorite business, Jejak Juta, is having its exhibition on meteorites at Bastion House, Jalan Kota, in Malacca from now until July 1.

“This exhibition is to showcase the meteorites in a manner that goes beyond the simple display seen in a conventional museum.

“Visitors will leave the exhibition with a heady feeling of having been to space themselves,” he promises.

Girl’s best friend: Datin Nor Bahriah Ibrahim showing off a meteorite brooch made of pearl and gold.
Jaafar says he had concept designer Syed Mustaffa Kamal Jamalullail of Creatifmind Design visit the Sci-Tech Centre in Canning Vale to get a better feel of meteorites before commencing work.

“This exhibition will spur an awareness on meteorites among Malaysians. I believe it will be the first of its kind in this region, and the hall will be equipped with state-of-the-art props and settings featuring an exhibition room, rotating room and lunar room or moonscape to provide visitors with an ‘out-of-the world experience’,” he adds.

Jaafar says the highlight of the exhibition will be in the “Meteor Impact Room”, where visitors will get an idea of the kind of devastation that follows a “meteor fall-out” from space on Earth!

Visitors will also not only get a chance to touch the meteorites but could also own them as a collection of jewellery and souvenir items will be sold in the product room at the end of the exhibition.

A fortune from meteorites
BY TUNKU SHAHARIAH

SUNGAI PETANI: Maverick entrepreneur Datuk Jaafar Jamaludin loves “chasing” shooting stars and now, he has a collection of meteorites worth some RM40mil.
Jaafar, who is a collector and astronomy enthusiast, said many Malaysians are unfamiliar with meteorites or their potential in being turned into money-spinners.

With great enthusiasm, the businessman and his foreign partners set up a company known as Jejak Juta Sdn Bhd which has been collecting meteorites of all shapes and sizes from all over the world for more than 10 years.

“People only hear of these shooting stars landing near somebody’s home in various parts of the world or spot a shooting star flying across the sky. But they will never dream of touching a meteorite.

“We want to make meteorites available to the public by turning them into consumer products like car accessories, jewellery, apparel, keris, souvenirs and building materials,” he told The Star in an interview.

Despite having set up his showroom and factory in Taman Ria Jaya in Sungai Petani at a cost of US$3mil (RM11.4mil) in 2004, Jaafar’s venture is met with misgivings by local bankers.

It is the perfect gift from space. But the astronaut is just a mock-up figure for Jejak Juta CEO Datuk Jaafar Jamaluddin to show off the 500kg meteorite at his factory in Sungai Petani. And it's amazing how this rock from space will eventually end up.
“The local banks are rather sceptical that this business can turn into a money-spinner. Our attempts to get local bankers to back our venture has not been fruitful,” he added.
Jaafar, who commutes between his two homes in Sungai Petani and Perth, Australia, every few months, said his opal business in Perth has helped kept his meteorite venture afloat in the last two years.

Meteorites are rock fragments from an asteroid that have been broken off by a collision and survives their encounter with the Earth’s atmosphere.

Jaafar’s wife Datin Norbariah Ibrahim, who is also a Jejak Juta director, said the company has two specially-trained staff members to cut and preserve iron meteorites.
She said meteorites in the company’s collection are mostly iron meteorites comprising 90% iron, 7% to 8% nickel and the rest other elements.

“The rocks are cut into pieces and slices of various sizes and made into powder form. Among the by-products are meteorite-based jewellery, picture frames, glass panels, exclusive gifts and keris blades,” she added.

The marque of Jejak Juta
By TUNKU SHAHARIAH

SUNGAI PETANI: Luxury carmakers in Germany are keen to use stardust and meteor slices from space in logos and accessories for their expensive and exclusive car brands.

Jejak Juta Sdn Bhd executive chairman Datuk Jaafar Jamaludin said he had early this year met with a few luxury carmakers in Germany who had expressed interest in incorporating stardust and thin meteor slices from his vast collection of meteorites.

“We’ve been invited by a few carmakers in Germany to show our samples of meteorite slices and stardust.

“We’ve even met their designers to see if stardust can be used in the logo of the exclusive brand or if the meteor slices can be turned into car accessories,” he told StarBiz.

He added that designs incorporating stardust and meteor slices would be the first of its kind in the world.

“Incorporating such timeless gems from space into logos and car accessories is a unique and rare proposal as meteorite is also highly exclusive and expensive,” he added.

Jaafar, who owns a majority stake in the Malaysian-Australian joint venture Jejak Juta, said the stardust and meteor slices would be taken from among the company’s RM40mil worth of meteorites bought from collectors from all over the world.

He added that meteorites were fast becoming collectors’ items due to their special extraterrestrial qualities, which some believed could bring about good vibes, positive energy or good health.
“This is proven (by the customer response) when we hold exhibitions for our meteorite-based jewellery, which is reasonably priced.

“The exquisite pieces of naturally-cut meteorites, designed in Hong Kong and sold here, are greatly sought after by both men and women collectors,” he said.

The company has a factory here where the natural sized meteorites are cut, shaped and sliced thinly.

Justice for the dead is an irrelevant statement. In accurate terms its for emotional closure on the part of the family. That being said, we hope for justice to be served, as well as a fair trial for the suspect involved.

All over the Chinese papers today - acquitted.

Why did he stay away for 6 years and then decide to come back? Cos all arranged already, else why come back and face the death sentence?
