hi guys,

i've been an iphone user for the past few years and jumping over to android, gnote was my first android phone and i'm totally new to android scene. after having the gnote for almost 3 weeks, i've always wanted to root it. here's the stock rom version that running on my gnote 2.3.6:

PDA: N7000DXLA1
PHONE: N7000DXKL2
CSC: N7000OLBKL2

I've read Benny's blog that in order to 2.3.6, I have to downgrade the rom back 2.3.5, root it then only upgrade it 2.3.6 with a rooted kernel in order to maintain the root. My question is, shall there be any failures during the process of downgrading, rooting or upgrading, is there anyway like iphone where we can just enter DFU mode and easily restore back to original firmware? Is there a way like this in Android phone?

It is Chainfire modded kernel files . You can try use Mobile odin lite ( free version )
Post files exact name you are downloading - if you want reconfirmation
hi benny,

thanks for replying. ok here's the files that i have downloaded excluding that mobile odin pro.

- 2.3.5 stock firmware: N7000DXKK1_N7000OLBKJ6_XME.zip

- 2.3.6 stock firmware: N7000DXLA1_N7000OLBKL2_XME.zip

- Odin3-v1.85.zip

- DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su.zip

- CF-Root-SGN_ZS_MUL_KK1-v5.0-CWM5.rar
---> this contain the InitialCFRootFlasher & etc

- CF-Root-SGN_XX_OXA_LA1-v5.0-CWM5.zip
---> this contain only a single kernel file: CF-Root-SGN_XX_OXA_LA1-v5.0-CWM5.tar

btw. i can't seem find mobile odin lite in market.

Hi Zeneziz, just like you, I am new to android (using iPhone) until recently a week ago, get myself a Galaxy Note. It was on LA1 kernel, and like you, wanted to root it as soon as possible. Although I have experience with jailbreaking in iphone but was a bit aprehensive about rooting for the first time in android. Fear of bricking an expensive gadget did come to my mind. After some research, decided to root my note. Here is my steps

Part 1: Downgrading to 2.3.5
1) Download rom N7000DXKK1_N7000OLBKJ6_XME.zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Need this rom to downgrade to be able to take advantage of the zergRush exploit to root. I did make a mistake earlier and download an higher release rom, KJ6 (N7000DXKL3_N7000OLBKL2_XME.zip), and discover that I cannot root succesfully

2) Once you got the rom file (N7000DXKK1_N7000OLBKJ6_N7000DXKJ3_HOME.tar.md5, use winrar not winzip to extract the zip file), flashing is very easy. Launch PC Odin and follow post# 2 of the XDA link. This step require you to put your phone to download mode which is similiar to iphone DFU mode (i guess). The whole flashing period should be less than 5 minutes.

If done successfully, you should in 2.3.5. I notice that all my app and setting are still intact. Unlike iphone IOS, they are wipe out after IOS install and need to restore from itune backup. Now you are ready for rooting.

Part 2: Rooting
1) Download InitialCFRootFlasher CF-Root-SGN_ZS_MUL_KK1-v5.0-CWM5.rar.
Important note, the version must match your kernel that you have downgrade. In this case, KK1
2) Run the batch file, not-rooted-yet.bat.
After several minutes, if things gone well, your phone is now root with CWM
Note that, there was an optional step to set your display timeout to 10minutes. I recommend that because timeout, my note screen kind of freeze during the rooting process.
Part 3: Upgrading the ROM to higher release (LA4 in my case, now there is LA6)

1) You need to download newer stock rom. In my case N7000XXLA4_N7000OXALA4_DBT.zip.
Now, LA6 is available. Use winrar to extract the tar file to put it into your note sdcard

2) To flash to higher rom, if you use the PC Odin method in step 1, you will lose root.
You need an android app (Mobile Odin Pro - paid app) from the market. This method will allow you to flash the newer room and preserve the root.

3) Download CF-Root-SGN_XX_OXA_LA4-v5.0-CWM5.rar if you are using LA4.
As you have upgrade your rom, need to fix CWM
Run batch file already-rooted.bat
Well you are done.
Although, in between steps, I did do backup using CWM and Titianum backup, the whole process (downgrading/rooting/upgrading) do not required any restoration as my data and app are intact.
In summary, rooting is relatively easy.
You should download all the necessary files before hand. And read the related posts in XDA before you commence.

Hope this help. And good luck.

wow thank you...that's was very informative. i hope this info can help others who wish to root their gnote.
anyway i have downloaded LA4 (German) and LA6 (Russia) stock roms. read that the LA4 was the best stock rom to date but wish to here other comments for the LA6 roms. so any comments for the LA6?

thanks.

just now i go test GN display with my friends and the display looks nicer than mine. the gamma test looks correct and video still got blocky deep black but lesser than mine. when i check the Note version, it was AP set non rooted KK9 i think. he also suggest me to get 1 on 1 from samsung or get it repair again.
*
i also tested the ironman 2 clip on my friend gnote (AP set non rooted KKA) and his gnote look so much better then mine. i do suspect that this is due to the firmware problem and that's why i planned to root my phone and use the Voodoo Screen Tuning util to see if it can help as i have heard lotsa ppl on xda said it did help in some way.

finally rooted my gnote and on LA4 rom now. thanks uncle benny and those who helped.

i'm also facing the screen issue like others (tested the ironman2 clip) and i installed voodoo screen tuning and now when i try to run that clip again, it seem ok already although there're still minor blotchy black patch visible near the end of the clip. so for the moment i think this is the only temporary solution.

hmm so i can just install any firmware without rooting rite? incase i want to claim warranty i just change it back to LA1 rite? if i install KK1...can i update to LA1 using OTA? sry im not experience enough regarding the procedure
*
Hi labuharry, I did test that ironman 2 clip when I downgrade to KK1 for rooting. The problem still exist and I test it again when I rooted and upgraded to LA4 and yet the problem still there. So I install Voodoo screen tuning (required root), run it , set it to native mode and test the clip again. This time those blotchy black patch was gone by 90% although not completely. So I suggest that you root your GNote and give it a try.

i'm doing some reading regarding backup and it really made my head spin. say if i were to use titanium backup, do i still need to do nandroid and efs backup? very confuse...

and by the way can we just use PC Odin to flash any gnote stock roms onto non-root device?

will it increase the binary counter if only used to flash stock roms?

how can i check the binary counter?

sorry for so many questions... am very noob with android phone.

Here's a simple way to remember
- Nandroid - full backup your firmware and phone system (via CWM)
- efs backup - backup your imei/efs (via app)
- Titanium backup - for apps and data (via app).
Yes..you can use Odin to flash stock firmware without rooting. No increase in binary counter if you flash official stock firmware.
*
Oic... That's mean Nandroid backup is not a 3rd party app like TI, right?
I found 2 apps for EFS backup (kTool & EFS Pro) which one is much recommended?
Btw how to do a full wipe and factory restore?

Thanks for all ya kind reply thumbup.gif

got the same problem when i flash to LA6 russia via mobil odin
suddenly when i type on my keyboard all came out as 'null'

what i did is i use CWM and Flash Stock ROM using the same LA6 russia and the problem solved.
While flashing via CWM i noticed still CSC unable to access \system\csc\XME\system

on my understanding is CSC mean its a country specific settings network details etc
so i bet if u flash to LA1 (malaysia) this problem wont happen.

edit:just my opinion... still new too:)
*
Heard that the CSC problem was mobile odin bug, right? So now after you flash the LA6 rom using CWM do you still have the CSC problem? Btw when you flash the LA6rom, do you have to download and use the CF-Root kernel for LA6?

yeah i used CF-Root Kernel LA6. just make sure u have the stock rom .tar file saved in sd/firmware/

after i flash the LA6 with CWM so far phone works well. All i know is when u flash a different country's carrier, CSC wont be available to access because CSC contains the software packages to a specific region, carrier branding and also APN settings for data connection, MMS etc for your service provider.
*
May i know what version of Mobile Odin that you used to flash the LA6 rom when you encounter the CSC problem? Currently I'm running on LA4 (Germany) rooted and everything seem smooth and fine. Thinking of flashing the LA6 rom using Mobile Odin but after reading most ppl getting the CSC error pulled me back. ohmy.gif

Added on February 15, 2012, 5:59 pmThis might sound a little bit stupid to ask but I will just ask anyway. How do you guys do Nandroid backup? Use the CWM app > Backup or boot into CWM recovery and backup from there? Is there any difference?
