The Return of The Raptor
It’s been a while we’ve seen or heard of Western Digital’s massively awesome platter-based storage solution, the WD VelociRaptor. When it was first launched, the VelociRaptor was one of the most sought after storage devices due to its high read-write speeds and capacity. SSDS may be popular now, but you can’t beat a HDD’s storage size.
Like all the previous generation of VelociRaptor HDDs, the current gen features a whopping 10,000 RPM spin rate, which maximises the read and write speeds of the drives utilising the SATA III 6.0Gbps interface. Despite being marketed as a 3.5-inch form factor drive, the VelociRaptor is really a 2.5-inch drive that is housed in a 3.5-inch mounting frame called the IcePack, which features a built-in heatsink that helps keep the temperature of the drive down whilst it is in operation.
With a spin speed of 10,000 RPM, certain security measures also have to be taken to ensure that one, the drives don’t wear and tear quickly, and secondly, the platters themselves are not physically damaged while in use or transit. It is to this end then that Western Digital has promised a mean-time-between-failure (MTBF) of 1.4 million hours, which is more than double of what a typical SATA drive usually offers, which is typically at 600,000 hours. On top of that, Western Digital is also offering a 5 year warranty for their VelociRaptor drives, as testament to their confidence of how long-lasting their top of the line platter-based drives are.
The beauty of the VelociRaptor isn’t just in how fast its data transfer speed is, which by the way checks out at about 200MB/s when connected to a SATA III interface, but also how fast it is capable of accessing data in the blink of an eye, making even the staunchest of SSD hardcore fans nod in agreement that this platter-based drive is the closest thing to the flash-based drive’s performance.
CHIP CONCLUDE: Those who are working in the media line will appreciate the speedy response times and huge storage space given to them by the Western Digital VelociRaptor. Not only do software open up faster, rendering times are also cut down and the abundance of storage means that you don’t need to delete things just to make space for new stuff that’s coming in.

Raptor is coming to strike back, I wonder how many of us will get this when the SSD price is going down.
