anyone discussing ext hdds here? are brands other than black seagate and WD any good? ive only been purchasing these brands for my EXTs but theyre getting more expensive so i think i should consider other brands

So what HDD brand is the best nowadays, in term of reliability?
I've been using Samsung Spinpoint F4 for years now without any problem.

I'm looking to buy new HDD but has a question regarding which brand to choose.

Should i buy the same Samsung HDD or is there any good reason for me to buy other brand instead?

I bought before A-DATA DashDrive™ Durable HD710 and Buffalo HD-PCTU3 : MiniStation™ USB 3.0. They are using Toshiba HDD's inside. In fact, my wife is using Buffalo PZU previous series under USB 2.0. Is Toshiba HDD inside too. As for Transcend ext HDD, i believe they are using the Toshiba HDD too.

Wowzers! 5 years warranty! Anyway you'd probably be ready to upgrade to a larger capacity HDD when you reach the 3rd year. Hopefully by then 6TB HDDs would become more affordable. *Keeping*fingers*crossed*

More than 6 months for Thoshiba if i recall correctly. Damn scared to store anythings important on them, gotta buy 2 more backup drive

WD Green and AVGP started to develop problem after one years.
While Black one after two years.

Green one was the most serious, bad sector occupied more than 75% of the drive.
AVGP and Black only have tiny bits of bad sector. but WD honor the warranty and replaced them.

I have around 5 hdd at home ( all 2tb, using toaster and 2 more in pc) various brands - samsung, hitachi, wd.

I have had to RMA/replaced 2 Western Digital hard disk in the last 2 years and yesterday, another one went kaput ( warranty expired)  due to bad sectors that cannot be regenerated. So all in all, 3 wd hard disk died on me and another 2.5 external wd rma also few months back.

Now im beginning to think WD have a QC isssue here ? my other hard disks at home ( samsung, hitachi 3.5 and buffalo 2.5) still going strong with daily use.

I would recommend WD or Buffalo.
