QUOTE(Hornet @ May 5 2012, 10:27 PM) Its true about the temperature, I had many hard disk died on me in the past due to overheat, no fan at the front, temp always rise to 50c However, even with a HAF 932 casing, right now I'm finding it really hard to maintain at 40c or lower. Most of the time its average at 43c-45c on a hot evening even with fan blowing. One easy way to reduce HDD temperatures is to allow your HDDs to power off if they are idle too long. Unpowered HDDs are cool HDDs.

In Windows 7, I look for this setting, and found in Power section (Balance), under Advance setting, there's one -Turn off hard disk after: --Setting: 20 minutes Is this the one? Thanks

Thanks That may not help , you may have to tweak with Hard Disk APM settings on how to slow it down. If its a data disk , probably you want to slow it down or tweak its settings. I forgot the name of the software

Seller didn't pack it safe enough, Poslaju dropped it and I'm now trying to get it RMA'ed again. For mechanical HDDs I still suggest buying through shops as a safer option.

Unpowered HDDs are cool HDDs. its a good choice but not wise if u on off too frequent. I usually have a 2hours setting to turn off the entire PC, instead of just HDD only. 20mins is kinda too much, unless u know that once u leave for 20mins u wont come back for at least 2hours. adding a case fan directly blow on it probably do much better result.

Took out my old LGA775 heatsink and placed on top of the hard disk and it did help to reduce the temperature by 1-2C . 1-2C means a lot for hard disk !

Thanks Yes. I normally set mine to sleep after 60 minutes, but that setting is for me. You can choose the behaviour that you want. But please understand that when HDDs are unpowered, it will take a short while to spin up before they are ready to be used when you access them, during which your system may be unresponsive. This may also include when shutting down Windows. If you have very few data that you often read from your otherwise rarely used data HDDs, you may as well copy them over to your primary HDD if you have the space for it. Music for instance.

Nope, i used WD own RMA service, usd7.50 then they will collect and send it back directly to me, but i told the problem to the seller he willing to cover this cost

Its not a good idea for you to encrypt something while on battery source.

Simple , now while its doing that , you decided to interrupt. It couldn't complete , now your drive can't be said encrypted nor fully decrypted. It has resulted in an unstable state

Not sure , you sure you have used BitLocker and not other things The problem now is that even if we can recover the data probably its gibberish. However there are few recovery softwares you could try , you may able to recover data which are not encrypted yet. I am not sure of the chances because I have not attempted to recover files from an encrypted hard disk Anyway the lesson is don't encrypt your hard disks , if you want to protect your files and stuff , consider encrypting the folder or just the files alone. Its way safer compared to doing this way

Its encrypted. You can't understand. Try with that recovery software and wait , if the disk is large it will take time. Just leave it overnight and pray it recovers something. Always remember , when you want to protect or use bitlocker. Do a bit of research what it does and do not attempt such tasks on battery power.
