Just bought a new Seagate SSHD 1TB yesterday as a timely upgrade to my old WD Blue HDD. I find the performance upgrade for that little money as compared to a new CPU/MOBO/RAM as 3X savings.
Happy camper here. Should have done it much sooner.
Casual but advanced user, no gaming or heavy use. Still on this trusty Asus/C2D E8400/4GB/Win7 pro/Micro ATX PC (considered bare minumum?)
I think its the best upgrade at this price.

Glad you made that jump... this is for your desktop?

RM250 nett at Jayacom, Sect 14 PJ Digital Mall.
Low Yat Plaza could be cheaper I'm unsure. More expensive for me to drive all the way there and back..no point.
Checked with other shops, ALLIT, and AOne...no stock of desktop model.
My trend is I replace or upgrade HDD once in 5-6 years, but this higher performance Hybrid HD was too hard to resist. Solid State HDD is far too expensive at this time.
Put it this way, its a nice upgrade, something like from one cpu level to another 1 or 2 up. Its not like lightning speed.

thumbup.gif Good catch at Jayacom PJ. Yep, desktop model a bit hard to come by as most users tend to go for the pure SSDs. Anyway, if it works for you. Good for you!

I just bought a Kingston 250gb SSD from them. Now this SSHD comes out... sad.gif Now thinking of getting a 2TB SSHD for my backup files.

Just want to ask, can the SSHD be used as a slave drive?

SSHD for backup? you're wasting your money if getting it as the SSD part wont be useful for backup.
Get some WE purple/red drive for back up.

SG's SSHD is just a hard drive with 8GB MLC NAND flash cache to speed up the performance. Hence it will be most useful as a boot/system drive as it will speed up the bootup and/or programs compared to booting up on a normal hard drive.

You could get WD Blue 1TB which runs at 7200 RPM if you want better performance. As for me I've been using my trusty 1TB and 2TB Greens to backup important data. It's a cost effective solution and it has been working out well.

Exactly!..for boot and enhanced program speed. For backup, any current type HDD will do...but if you insist on SSHD, its your choice, no-one will deny you.
For me, my previous WD Blue is now an off line backup. (still inside the PC, but not wired up, only wired up when doing backup process)
I always partition my running HDD to 2 parts, C: for OS/Programs, D: for data and misc. The old HDD will be a mirror of Drive D at backup.

Hi sifus,
Really need your help on my problem.. not sure if this is the right thread but here goes...

I have a WD myPassport 1tb and after loaning to a friend, it was returned unreadable. whenever i plug into the comp, only can detect the presence of the harddisc but cant open or access the files. The light on the harddisc is blinking and can hear a clicking sound from the hard disk.

Is there any way of retrieving data from there? The data in there is precious.

Really hope for your help and advice sifus sad.gif

Ah!.. 2014 coming to an end. GST kicks in next year, reckon IT stuff will cost more with tax. I single it out the SSHD as the best and affordable upgrade to my PC for quite sometime. Maybe time to upgrade to new i5 or AMD FX with more memory, but do I really need those, maybe not at the moment, but must think about it before GST kicks in. This SSHD will continue to be used for a long long time.
Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to all!

Are you hearing the normal HDD reading clicking sound or is it the read failure clicking sound that you are describing? Read-failure click is usually single-click followed by pause for 1-3 secs and repeats itself in a cycle until the HDD manages to read the particular problem sector or gets a timeout.

First thing first, download the Data Lifeguard Diagnostic SW and run a complete test on the portable HDD. You can use the results for warranty later.

Note that you may not be able to access the internal HDD by opening the box as the USD controller is integrated into the HDD's PCB. So data recovery will be limited to professional firms that the equipment and parts to extract the trapped data for you. See the following post -

Anyone monitoring HDD prices lately?

I wonder if prices are going up due to ringgit weakening, despite WD having a big factory here in Kelana Jaya.....

Yes they are. sad.gif Indeed ironic since WD is made in this region.

Bought my 6TB WD Red mid September 2014 for RM 875. Now it's at RM 919.

So, I'm looking at getting a new HDD for storing pictures only. So it has got to be reliable. If paying extra for the Black version for better reliability/endurance, I might seriously consider it. I just don't want something that goes wrong in the future. I own a WD Blue 1TB and a WD Green 2TB and both are working fine.

Currently looking at the WD Blue 1TB at RM174, WD Black 1TB at RM254 or the Seagate SSHD 1TB at RM279.

Also, would a SSHD be useful for storing pictures or just pointless? Talking about it as a cache drive for storage purposes.

Hello guys, I'm looking for a hard disk that could eventually install several games on it.

Currently having Plextor M5S 128GB for OS and some softwares that often be use.
WD RED 3TB for storing media files such as pictures, videos, movies and etc.

Looking for a drive to install games on it and hopefully wont be affect much performance.

I do own a WD Black 1TB before and found out the noise eventually quite annoying as compare to my WD RED( Quite quiet in my opinion.) Any alternative or WD Black is the best choice for the price to performance ratio..

Do advise

The latest WD Blue (EZEX series specifically) actually performs as quickly as the WD Black (FZEX). The Blue also doesn't run as hot and as noisy.
It's just too bad they don't come in capacities larger than 1TB (though expect this to entirely change as WD should announce new drives at CES 2015).

So there you go.

What would you guys recommend to do to reduce HDD vibrations within the case? I've seen those anti vibration strips on FrozenCPU and am wondering if they're effective and if there's any seller here that has them.
