I think somewhere in the discussions that it was pointed out the Seagate Barracuda warranty is only 2 years. Even then, that's 1 extra year more warranty that what we get in Malaysia.

2 years? i saw only stated 1 yr at online price list.. anyone that bought one before can verify?

Thought it was only the 1TB EZRX Green drives that had 1TB / platter. Looks like they have already updated the Green drives.

which model of WD have 1TB platter besides the 1TB EZRX Green drive?

actually what are the difference between WD GREEN AV-GP 3TB and WD Green 3TB? warranty wise the same? I'm looking to store a mixture of large files (movies) & small files accumulated over the years.

Price of HDD is slowly falling back to normal. Not bad. Took one freaking year. Just hope this year they have no repeat of the floods.

I'll probably skip this due to the warranty, too short IMO, only 1-year, and most of them broke down right after 1-year+. doh.gif
Maybe the SV35 series better choice, 3-year, but need to pay more than WDC offering. hmm.gif

how much is SV35 currently ?

Wanna share another good RMA experience with WD.
As always, I used their courier service, strangely though it was free; there was a msg on the RMA page saying they normally charge but currently it's free.

Took them like 2 weeks to pickup my dead HDD (Green 500GB), had to email them several times since the courier guy FFK twice.

Today I got my replacement, a re-certified 3"5 WD Black 500GB (WD5001AALS)  thumbup.gif

Edit:
Just checked the details, RMA created 15 Sept, courier pickup 5 Oct, replacement received 11 Oct.

return green , got back black? wow...

Have a look at this link: http://support.wdc.com/warranty/index_end.asp?lang=en
Follow the steps to get your RMA done, if it still has warranty.
WDC has very tedious steps to follow.

According to Compu-Zone's lastest price list, Seagate CCTV (SV35??) 2TB price is equal to WDC 3TB CCTV (AV-GP??).
WDC is a better buy in this case wink.gif

is wdc 3tb cctv warranty 3 years?

There's a new 3TB in the market, from Toshiba. No idea about the warranty and all but it's priced at RM409 @ viewnet.

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2...-3tb-hard-drive

I think it's this one:

Rm409 is a good price for 3TB. Anybody use it before, reliability wise?

Had some terrible experience with green WD..
My HDD 1.5 HDD just contracted bad sector since last mth and went totally dead last week.Guess i overstress the hdd by running movies and mp3 directly from it instead from my local drives.

Currently looking under SV35 since there were indicated as the far most reliable hdd atm.
Samsung F3 spinpoints are out of question since samsung no longer produce hdd anymore. I would not risk to pay over RM250 for some users who tried to sell their 2yrs or above samsung 1tb/2tb drives.

Any advises around?
*
running movies directly from the hdd will not 'overstress' it. if u run it 24/7 then that's overstress.
many factors can render a hdd reliability such as temperature and frequency of read/write to it.

u might want to check out toshiba's new 3TB. only Rm409 @ viewnet.

Thx for the advise. Thought that when the video players like mpc or vlc attempts to read other partition's/different drive to play mp3/movie files, it'll tends to degrade the performance of drive. It's like local streaming in between drives which requires read/write process. Guess it's my misunderstanding.

Never have i got so particular into purchasing HDD in the past. But eversince losing over 700gb of movies,mp3,work and other games installed has cause me to be extremely vary of choosing my HDD from now on. I had purchased many WD HDD before and none had failed me even after 5 years of useage. This green died on me after exactly 2 years of useage. That's where the warranty went dead too.

So far lookin into the forums, it's like most dealers in the garage section had been took overwhelmed by WD sellers. There are seagates but they sell normal ones and it's reputable to malfunction easily. The only ones i saw that hangs around the RM290 tag are the sv35 cctv type hdd which is recommended by most for it's durability over 24/7 stressing. The one selling a brand new sv35 1tb wasn't even from lowyat's garage.

There are enterprises one but i'm unsure of it's quality. I dont read the statics since 1% and 0.74% annual failure rate kind of like transparent to me. i just pray that they dont died after exact 2 yrs.
*
reliability of hard disk have too many factors to pinpoint. i have used countless brands over the years..from quantum to seagate to wd...all have failed me before. but so far samsung have not failed me, having said that, maybe its because i am more aware of the failure rate and am much careful in handling it, check the temperature etc. but touch wood lol.
for reliability i hitachis are reliable but they no longer producing hdd. And toshiba taken over their plant. so the new toshiba 'should' be reliable i think. since its new yet need some time for people to verify it.

wd acquired hitachi gst but not toshiba
*
what i meant was toshiba took over hitachi's plant..the plant in china to be exact smile.gif
there is rumours saying that the toshibas churning out from this plant now is produced by the same machine of the infamous hitachi 7k3000. a quick google shows the similarity of both exterior cases.

i was in shenzhen hgst plant (hailiang) ... hitachi gst is now "hgst , a wd company" due to china gov doesn't approve the deal , so now work as separate entity but under wd  rclxub.gif

yes at first it was wd, but eventually it went to toshiba as there is the anti-trust monopolies issue. because it only left wd and seagate 2 players on the market. so the goverment does not allow that, hence it goes to toshiba. thats what i heard..

price dropped on 2tb range to 299. look like 3tb is going to drop to 399 soon?

looks like its only a matter of time 3tb gonna drop below the Rm400 mark..
the one closest to the $3XX pricetag is the toshiba 3tb..

Is your PSU good enough to power your system?
And since you have retrieved all the files, please try zero-filling/secure erase your WD Green HDD and repartition it. I have restored one previously "dead" HDD and it is now working just fine.
*
may i know which program u use to perform zero filling? like to revive my dead hdd too...

I forgot which program I had used specifically in that case. It was either HDDScan's Erase, the command line tool diskpart's "clean all", or CCleaner's Drive Wiper (Simple Overwrite). Whatever it was, I was shocked at how quick the erase was, which caused me to reexamine the HDD for the bad sectors only to find them gone. It seems that whatever it was that was causing the problem, the HDD was not suffering from a physical defect.

ok. i have used hdd generator before, works fine but its very slow..

Not sure if this is the right thread to be asking or not, I just bought and will be installing a Seagate Barracuda 3TB HDD to my system. Now I have read about 4K alignment and 3TB capacity issue with older system?

Basically what I know in hand now is,

1. I need to use GPT instead of MBR?
2. Windows 7 will automatically align it to 4K for me?

Can anyone confirm my statements?
*
yes u need to use GPT.
yup win7 will do everything for u.

Anyone wanna be an early adopter? tongue.gif

I'd rather get 3TB x 2 with that price... of course, there's no 5 years warranty and all..  biggrin.gif
*
better get 3 x 3tb toshiba @ $399 each tongue.gif
