u install ur red as os boot disk? coz last yr my fren bought it for his new rig, the boot up time is lot slower than wd green a lot

nop.. i have ssd as boot hdd... as far transfer compare to 1 tb green hdd this red much faster(3tb red nas wd).. and as wd green this wd red use less power than wd green when i open wd website spec chart.. ya.. this red hdd sleep like wd green oso.. but mush faster awake time..and less noisy when wake up.. the clicking sound is more quieter..

hi guys, sorry if this question had been asked before.

im going to get a new HDD tomorrow, but im in dilemma which one to get

1. WD Red
2. WD Black

both hdd is it the same? or which one is more on performance?

black.. if want to store just porn i recommend green cheaper

if got money and want performance go black.. if want value and longer than normal HDD warranty period take red.. me im using red as storage.. coz if really want performance.. please use SSD..performance far faster than current HDD top spec.. dun worry today ssd not goona have issue of early die or freeze..

SSD is way too expensive already...can't afford that

If you want performance, then Black series but beware of the temperature if your storage device or environment is not well ventilated or badly cooled.
Choose Red for 24/7 NAS usage, this is built especially for NAS purpose, withstand 24/7 use, minimal electricity and less heat compare to Black.

actually, what is the disadvantage of WD GREEN series?

However it really shine at sequential transfer tests hence its suitability in RAID boxes.

You will get better performance with WD Blue as a bootdisk.

yup i did not use as boot drice .. i've use SSD.. there is no blue WD for 3Tb.. so most value for me is Red coz of longer warranty.. although green WD price is cheaper..I opt for red WD

For boot drive, random access speed and latency play biggest role than sequential speed, Blue or better Black will provide better startup or application launch/access compare to Red or Green.
In the test, it's used for storage purpose only, as the sentence stated "ranging from single drive to 2, 5 and 8-bay Synology NAS deployments", they configure them all in a single NAS environment only. I hope that clears out your confusion.


Used as boot disk is not recommended.

if red put as boot disk, it is a terrible performance and u will suffer from it

hi guys, if we always FAST-FORWARD / SKIP HERE SKIP THERE OF VIDEO / FILE MIGRATION, will caused HDD rosak/spoiled faster?

The biggest gripe I have heard so far is the IntelliPower feature parks the HDD head every 8 secs throughout its lifetime. The HDD is supposedly saves more power then ever before as idle power for 2TB model is only 3W compared to 2TB black @ 8W. However the advantages far outweights the disadvantage. Its cheap, runs cool, lowest MYR/TB ratio, sips power like a camel and did I mention that its really affordable?

If you are not running RAID or 24/7 ops, this HDD is a great candidate for single-disk data storage with your occasional downloads etc. Just remember not to build RAID 0/5/6 and the likes with this HDD as it lacks TLER feature that prevents member disks to drop out of a group. Its still OK to use it as JBOD on your NAS.

Assuming that you are in the market for a HDD that can handle large media files, you could try AV green which comes with 3 years warranty. AV green was designed with DVR / video surveillance in mind and handles up to 12 simultaneous HD video streams. I'm glad that I've chosen AV green over the normal green as its been running 24/7 in my Linux NAS > 6 months and haven't had any issues. Note that while it has Intellipower feature, the idle disk timer is disabled by default so that it doesn't park the HDD head every 8 secs.

Nowadays OS (Win, Linux etc) and video player software caches quite a bit of data on to the RAM and accesses HDD more efficiently so the HDD won't koyak so fast. Moreover most HDD have 64MB build-in cache assist with transfer of large data chunks. The HDD is more likely to koyak from being knocked about when the disk is spinning.

However its a different story if you are running > 2 movies at the same time and doing all those things Asians normally do when watching videos. My comments only applies to PCs and servers which have plenty of RAM and may not apply to media players with embedded OS and small RAM.

That was the regret of several users at other forums when they wanted to take advantage of its lower idle power usage and 3yrs warranty.
