Hi guys,

Recently started to appreciate better quality audio, and would like some advise and guidance as I am pretty fresh in this scene.

Currently I only have a Shure se215 and Goldring dr150, and listen to music from my phone/iPad. I am considering to get a dap. Which route would be the better one for the following?

1) Fiio x1 plus DAC
2) iBasso dx90

Generally my idea is since I'm a beginner, should I start slow with lower budget, or go straight to something better than beginner gear and thus able to forget about upgrading till the device breaks. I mostly listen to pop, rock, rap, electric and metal.

Any ideas or advice will be much appreciated! notworthy.gif

Hey guys, thanks for the replies!

i would recommend dx90 for the multipurpose function embedded,it can line out, 3 gain levels, coaxial out, dac on pc, support micro sd and usb otg, can use rockbox or custom tuned official firmware, with so much feature on a dual dac device, what's not to like? it's like a general problem solver

besides that, there are official staff of ibasso specifically dealing with dx90 issues on headfi forum, that's almost live support as per say

One of my concerns is also that the DX90 would be too good for the earphones that i have now and I would be essentially wasting it..

Go for the DX90, or if you can wait, FiiO X5ii, which will be launched soon.
Audition both of them if you can, and choose the one that you like most.

I'm not in a big hurry to get a dap. So yes thanks for suggesting this, i would wait and try both then decide! smile.gif

I'd say go for the X1 (don't need to get another DAC) and invest more on a better IEM.
You'd hear more difference on a X1 + better IEM compared to a DX90 + SE215/Goldring

What you say actually does make sense. Is the X1 considered a step up from a smartphone though?

X1 only has line out and phone out, no digital out. Can't connect with external dac ya. smile.gif

Thanks for letting me know! I was confused with the picture of FiiO X1 DAP + E11K amplifier and thought the E11K a DAC.

So thank you everyone. Sounds like either the Fiio X1 and the iBasso dx90 both have their pros. I will find a day to try them both (and maybe even the Fiio x5ii) before finally making a decision. smile.gif

If you will upgrade to a big cans later, can consider HiFiMAN HM650 also.
Size is bigger, but the build in amp should be the strongest among dap below RM2k. Tried it with HE400i and HD600/650 before, can drive those high impedance/low sensitivity headphones quite well. Not need to consider adding another portable amp below RM800. Tried to connect with Cayin C5 before, not much improvement.
