Hi all,

trying to get a poll to see which place has the best price to shop to save money.

Let's help each other out here

I understand each shopping place has better price on certain type of items (or certain time), so cannot compare very detail. This is just to get a survey on overall impression on pricing for weekly shopping

Note : I post an earlier survey but found out there are more shops that i am aware of biggrin.gif. and since i can't find ways to add new items into the poll, i decided to close it and open a new one to include those left out earlier. You can find the earlier post here

In terms of price, 99 speedmart is the cheapest. But they don't have many stuff and their service not nice.

Tesco best in service though price may not be the lowest.

You guys know right that other than KR1M none of those hypermarket really cheap?

All these hypermarket plays with their pricing on weekly basis. An item that is cheap at hyper "A" this week, may not be cheap the week after.

For example, King Sardin at hyper "A" may cost RM 4.89 this week and at other hypers, they are selling higher but Nestle UHT (1 Litre) is cheap there but not at hyper "A".

This is called "Engagement Pricing".

When you see the flyers, out of the many items in there, you will then find atleast 1-2 items that you see as cheap as compares to the other hyper and this will entice you to go to that hyper.

Once you are there, you will end up buying more items and these items will then cushioned the cheap pricing for that King's Sardin for example.

UNLESS, you really go for that cheap item, and then go to other hyper and by their cheap items individually.....

It's marketing guys.....!!!

In Britain Tesco never sells expire meat/veg at any price.
Here in Malaysia they sell it at a discount!

Also dun ever buy Malaysian Tesco 'Value' food processed products except for the cooking oil!

every where also have expired stuff. Just that there they will heavily discount the product when it is going to be expire.
Once expired they will throw and not display it on their shelf.

I'm sorry TS, u cannot gauge which is the cheapest. If u have been shopping for ages like me at these places, u will know that the promo price for the same items are rotated between different hypermarkets. The only big difference between is the frequency of the low prices between them. But i can tell you that TESCO has the highest low price frequency among all. BUT since Mydin is doing this kR1M thing, their prices started to go low. In fact much lower than all of them combined. Which is shocking because Mydin was NEVEr the lowest price before... EVER.

they sell expensive top tier things, but its all relatively cheaper.
and their own branded stuffs too. cheap and nice quality x10 worth what you pay for.

i disagree...

i keep finding that prices of stuff in the mini markets are relatively higher than those big supermarkets..its logical that these big players buy things in bulk thus deserve some discounts...

but to the topic which offers the lowest price in whole, I would say tesco...been comparing Tesco Shah Alam, Giant Shah Alam and Carrefour Midvalley,

i understand from my uncle that the term & condition of big hypermarket is really bad

eg you have to "rent" the shelves irrespective you got sales or not (on top of other cost)

Mydin was never the cheapest in dry goods. Seriously. Its only after KR1M their stuff gets cheaper. So u go figure la. I have been going to almost every supermarket/ hypermarket in klang valley. Mydin WAS never the most cheapest. WAS never. It is now with its dry goods like biscuit, noodle, junk food and some household stuff. Their shoes (china) are not cheap. Their bags are not cheap. Their clothes are just on par with the other bunch of hypermarkets.

Have u ever been to Mydin outlets in Sinar Kota, Chow Kit, Masjid India, Klang & blah blah? Do u ever noticed what kind of customers make up their bulk of buyers? Now take that data and see why they can still do business. I'm just sayin....... doh.gif

Very true. U have to pay few thousand up front to get a space at any hypermarket. Its like consignment la. Hypermarkets actually does not need to sell their own brands. At first it was to make the consumers trust their brand is just as good as branded ones.

On those small mini markets cannot sell much cheaper because operating cost is high. They do not have those rent areas to make money. Usually they sell at retail price. Unless a particular brand has special offers or discounts.

For hypermarkets, the prices are not determined by them. It is determined by the people who sells their stuff on their shelves. That is why their promotions rotate from hypermarket to hypermarket.

that's why my uncle don't want to promote his stuff in tesco. the cost too high already although his stuff sell quite good in mini market / pasar malam
